If you look back into English history, The Roman invasion got progressively less successful with Northern tribes as they had very nationalistic, insular tendencies. This translates into today's situation very well and being part English further North, I feel great pride in that.
I'm a Northerner in exile in the South and the only people who chat to me at any length are other disenfranchised Northerners who have that twinkle in the eyes and a wicked sense of humour! I miss it.
