Ten Miles High in an AIR-TIGHT BALL
A huge yellow balloon soared skyward a few weeks ago, from Augsberg, Germany. Instead of a basket, it trailed an air-tight black-and-silver aluminum ball. Within Prof. Auguste Piccard, physicist, and Charles Kipfer aimed to explore the air 50,000 feet up. Seventeen hours later, after being given up for dead, they returned safely from an estimated height of more than 52,000 feet, almost ten miles, shattering every aircraft altitude record. Oxygen tanks kept them alive while they made observations. Records of their instruments are now being checked and interpreted. First to rise safely into the upper layer of the earth’s atmosphere, they found the air pressure at ten miles altitude so low - one-tenth of that at sea level-that a man exposed to it would perish much as a deep-sea fish bursts of its own internal pressure when brought to the earth’s surface. Picard and his aid found cosmic rays, mysterious radiations from outer space, far more powerful than at the earth’s surface, and gaged their intensity. The explorers trapped samples of the upper air, “blue air,” as Piccard reported it to appear, in cylinders. Analysis may prove it exceptionally rich in ozone,the intensely blue gas supposedly responsible for the Heaviside layer or “radio roof.” The story of their adventure surpasses fiction. During the ascent, the aluminum ball began to leak. They plugged it desperately with vaseline and cotton waste, stopping the leak. In the first half hour the balloon shot upward nine miles. Through portholes,the observers saw the earth through copper-colored, then bluish haze. It seemed a flat disk with upturned edge. At the ten-mile level the sky appeared a deep, dark blue. With observations complete, the observers tried to descend, but couldn’t. While their oxygen tanks emptied, they floated aimlessly over Germany, Austria, and Italy. Cool evening air contracted the ballon’s gas and brought them down on a glacier near Ober-Gurgl, Austria, with one hour’s supply of oxygen to spare.

Auguste Piccard’s son, Jacques Piccard was one of the two explorers that first descended to the deepest part of the ocean. Both father and son were in pressure vessels. This is an artistic portrayal of their scientific achievements. And it’s an ad for cognac.

There are three things you need to understand first.
1) This is an ad for Hennessy V. S. Cognac. It is part of their Chase Your Wild Rabbit campaign. The rabbit is a metaphor for a difficult to reach goal that drives your ambition. They want to portray their customers as wealthy successful innovators such as explorers or rappers.
2) Auguste Piccard was a scientist who was studying cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere. To do this, he developed a pressurized capsule to survive the very thin air of the stratosphere.
3) Jacques Piccard, Auguste’ son was an ocean explorer. He and his father used the idea of the pressure capsule to develop a diving bell that could survive the crushing conditions of the Challenger Deep, the lowest point of the ocean floor.
So this father son pair of scientist explorers are perfect to portray as successful men chasing their Wild Rabbits (and getting you to buy their product).
They hire the ad agency, Droga5 to produce the ad. They do an amazing job of it, creating what a lot of people assume is a scene from a high budget movie.
Ok, now we get to the waters above part. They have a father and son story, they want to show the chase for the Wild Rabbit being passed from one generation to the next. In writing their outline for the ad, my guess is, they thought. “ the first guy is exploring the sky. He is going up. The second guy is exploring the ocean. He is going down. We need a dramatic, seamless transition between these two things separated by many years”. That transition is turning rising into falling and the splash of water representing the change of father into son. It is apparent that they are showing two completely separate events by the different actors as well as the different capsule interiors and exteriors.
This conveys the image they want for their product.
Showing a biblically inspired water barrier above a flat earth is not what they want for attracting the demographic that buys high end cognac.

You cannot move gas molecules so fast as ground ones, let alone making them move perfectly synchronized. And gravity is ridiculously not enough to provide such speed to a gas molecule. Our "moving planet" would be piercing it's own atmosphere and escaping from it, just like a bullet pierces and escapes the gas which surrounds it after fired. We would have lost our atmosphere and even all the water on the supposed orbit around sun during Earth's formation.
@@Braxton1981 This ignorance is unacceptable. If we're not moving, and the sun and planets are, then why do they have atmospheres? Something is moving, surely. Why does the moving object, regardless what it is, not follow your laughable version of the laws we observe?

Imagine a point you know, 16.6 mi away from you. Well, Earth is supposed to travel that distance, in a second. Imagine you're stepping on the face of the supposed moving earth's orbit around sun, *which is opossed* to the earth's side facing that fast orbital path: then your "floor" is moving "down" from your point of view, to a speed as high as 67,108 mi/h. On that point, Earth is like "escaping" from you downwards, very, very fast. Calculate then what would happen to the thin atmosphere sorrounding you in that case. *In the best case,* a massive turbulence, and a ridiculous high atmospheric pressure (all Earth's gas would accumulate on that Earth's side) that would not allow you to live, let alone stand on your feet. *In a real physics case:* It would be left behind: lost in space, as only an Earth's gravity attraction of about 9.81 m/s^2 would be the only relevant force pulling that gas down, and that's obviously not enough to keep the gas stuck to the ground, let alone so perfectly stuck with no turbulence, to bring you that "no wind days" (0 mi/h winds). No atmosphere and no water on earth surface, that would be the real scenario. Imagine youself trying to help a gas molecule to reach a moving surface escaping from it so fast, but using only forces as weak as Earth's gravity, gas inertia and sun's gravity (and you can add all the forces you want here: it won't result).
Sun's gravity acting on that molecules will only make things worse, more turbulent, more "noise", as of it's direction.
Then, add the Earth's rotation to the equation.
Our surface would be just as the Moon looks like.
