The joke about Sevenger being underutilized and forgotten is only made funnier by the fact he debuted in Leo and you're commenting on the Seven video.
Sevenger is Seven’s, plus Windom isn’t the best used either. I just find it funny that STORAGE seemed to look at Seven for robot designs
My favorite is part about the finale is the Ultra Guard’s reaction to Dan’s true identity.
They don’t even question it but instead they immediately get on their jets to help out. They don’t even refer to Ultraseven as “Ultraseven” anymore but instead just “Dan”.
Also, the delivery of the line “Lets go, humanity must defend earth by it’s own hands!” along with the music goes hard.
That speech about how if Dan dies, it is humankind who killed him, because he fought to the last to protect the Earth with his body in terrible shape, makes me tear up every time.
Regarding the weird transitions, Ultraseven was airing at the same time as Captain Scarlet, a Gerry Anderson series best known for being horrifically violent and the Spectrum Drum transitions. There are some pretty consistent parallels between Anderson and Tsuburaya productions, specifically the presence of super vehicles in Stingray and Thunderbirds leading to the introduction of the SSSP in Ultraman, so it's entirely possible that the tone shift after the first batch of episodes is entirely because Captain Scarlet made its way to Japan at the same time.
Ultraseven is far and away my favorite show in the entire series, and my favorite Ultra full stop. Zero carrying on his legacy and the reappearance of Windom, Sevenger and KING JOE in Ultraman Zett are fantastic elements of the new generation, and Heisei Ultraseven is one of the best followups in the entire series, so it makes me very happy to learn that one of my favorite tokusatsu youtubers loves it the same way I do. ALL HAIL GUTSO SEIJIN!
24:01 Just realised that these transitions are lifted directly from the ones in "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons" - even down to the drumbeat.
Eiji Tsuburaya was known to be a Thunderbirds fan, it wouldn't be surprising if he was a fan of Captain Scarlet, the puppet show Gerry Anderson made straight afterwards.
I think Ultraseven was by far, the best of the Ultra Hero series in atmosphere, plot, and social issues.
I started the Ultra series with Ultraman 66, but it was Seven that really solidified my love of the series. Super Weapon is such a good episode, and the quote about running a marathon while coughing up blood stuck with me for a long time.
I love how Ultraseven shows both the campy, ridiculous side and more dramatic, introspective side of tokusatsu perfectly.
Ultraseven series is literally like a wine, it only gets better the longer you let it grow on you.
Ya know with all the brutal finishers in the Showa Era I'm surprised they didn't have the Ultra Brothers as guest characters for Mortal Kombat. They would thrive, especially Ace that man is a menace.
The funniest thing about Dino Tank is he was added to that Ultraman fighting game on GBA as the representative Kaiju of Ultraseven. Not Eleking. Not King Joe. Not even Metron.
Ultraseven is one heck of the show and It'll be remembered forever

I've been waiting for this retrospective and didn't even noticed this released and I'm excited, Ultraseven changed my life
One of my favorite moments in early Seven was him transforming and breaking out of prison.
It wasn't even super impactful or anything it was just so cool to me as a kid I still remembered it 12 years later as an adult and was one of the reasons I started watching Ultraman again.
Also Zero is cool I love him.
Fantastic review and this is also a great refresher since I only watched my shout factory boxset of it once. I was bummed about them not including that banned episode too. I'll have to track that down sometime. I also own the orb film with him which was epic. Original Ultraman having the Goji 54 footsteps was such a cool touch too. Looking forward to more of your work
i really do appreciate you taking so much time and care when doing these retrospects. You really nail every facet of the shows. Most folks would talk about just the Ultra themselves and the monsters. But you make sure to note the music, production, and all the folks behind the scenes that made the show possible. Its amazing work. I have the same sentiment as you do about episode 12. It should be preserved, but I can't really fault the company for not wanting to put it back out there in the world.
Maybe try a smaller series like Neo Ultra Q or the 2 Zearth films before taking on another 50 plus series one?
My introduction to the Ultra-series is from my dad recommending Ultraseven because he used to watch it as a kid. So many good memories.
It's weird how aliens have these world ending powers and weapons and monsters but get done in by some nerd who makes maps out universe and who loses there main source of power on a regular basis and yet is still not the strongest person in there species and still wins at the end of the day lol
I like to imagine that cartography is just Seven's passion, he's actually a very seasoned, well-trained fighter. Losing his Ultra Eye repeatedly, however, I have no explanation lol Maybe he's just klutzy.
perhaps the Capsule Monsters could have been utilised better if they leaned more into this being seperate from Ultraman, so Seven would be the size of a human and when a giant monster appears that's when he sends out a capsule monster, obviously that would have heavily affected the later shows but hey it's the best I can think of.
Also the english equivalent to Alien Bado would be Alien Waruio
I actually like how brief some of Seven's fights are.
I subbed for your videos where you watched all the crappy movies, but I’ve enjoyed learning more about these older Japanese tv shows. So for what it’s worth, your channel is the only one I’m subbed to that discusses kaiju tv shows.
(Warning! Old man story ahead) I spent half of the 1980s living in Micronesia which still had a strong Japanese influence and was somewhat aware of Ultraman, but didn’t have much access to it. There was other shows that were more adult oriented broadcasted (when we had electricity) such as The Unfettered Shogun 暴れん坊将軍, but not many of the kaiju focused tv. I still have a soft spot for The Unfettered Shogun despite its cut and paste stories…anywho…time to go drink an Ensure and complain about some kids riding the bikes on my street. 😉😂

Nice retrospective! I watched Seven for the first time last year with friends and I feel like a lot of my feelings on the show reflect yours. Definitely a highlight and major foundation for the franchise.

I really like Ultra Seven. I didn't discover it until the late 90s. The English dubbed version used to run on TBS.
I feel like there really isn't a retcon in terms of the continuity between Ultra Seven and Ultraman. Firstly, they explicitly mention that Ultra Seven hails from Nebula M78. Also, there's no explicit inconsistencies in terms of when the shows take place (Ultraman takes place in 1993 and Ultra Seven circa 1999 or 2000). Lastly, out of the many episodes of Ultra Seven that were never made, there was an episode entitled Alien 15 +Monster 35, which would have involved Ultra Seven fighting various kaiju from Ultra Q and Ultraman that were revived by the Baltans. Seven would have been assisted in the final battle by a new kaiju named Goad. It was made as a pitch to TBS, who didn't want to make Nightmare on the Fourth Planet due to it's lack of monsters, but when Akio Jissoji proposed this as an alternative, TBS decided to let him make Nightmare on the Fourth Planet due to Alien 15 + Monster 35 being too expensive to make. I would have really like to see that episode be made, and narratively it would have made sense as the penultimate episode before the two-part finale as fighting numerous returning kaiju at once could have worked as a catalyst for Seven's burnout.
That being said, Ultra Seven works perfectly fine the way it is from the pathos of its hero, and it's more mature themes. However, I feel like the Ultraman mythos wouldn't be the same without Ultra Seven, nor would Ultra Seven be the same if he didn't follow in Ultraman's footsteps.
The way the booklet skips from episode 11 to 13 was so funny to me. I never felt more gasoline by a piece of paper in my entire life

Funny thing, you can do the intro of Big O and just replace the chanting of Big O with King Joe and virtually nothing changes. I found myself humming this when I was playing Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher while raising a King Joe, but had no idea of the actual parallels between it and Ultraseven until just now.
Gee those last two capsule monsters could have helped against Pandon, Dan! Um um with the destruction of Windom he couldn’t bear to see the other two die and he knew their fighting power was shit anyway.
Ultra Seven was my favorite of the series. I watched it as an 8 year old in Thailand (early 1970s). The theme song was a very big hit in Thailand and , as a chld, I listed to it on my 45 rpm record daily.
Eleking is incredibly goofy but such a cool creature design, I’m glad he got to be a protagonist monster in Ultragalaxy.

UltraSeven may not have initially supposed to be a sequel to the first Ultraman, but it does improve a ton of concepts that Ultraman 66 introduced while bringing a lot new to the table which is what every good sequel should do
I like the capsule monsters. Miclas had the best record because both his fights the enemy had to work for it.

I grew up watching Ultraman, never saw Ultra7 or any of the others. I've seen Ultra7 as an adult and it was ok. But Ultraman will always have my heart.

At first I didn't really like the alien designs. I mainly thought that they where uninspiring when it's just a puppet on hidden wires. But now I see how the show tried to diversify their aliens by trying to make some of them have a less humanoid shape.

I was so happy about how well Ultraseven worked for me, after having it hyped up as an even more beloved and influential show than Ultraman '66. Personally, I actually prefer the more consistent serious tone to Ultraman's ping-ponging between kiddie fare and sometimes edgier stuff. I'd say Star Trek TOS is a good comparison. And yeah, it still looks great, both in terms of cinematography and budget for its effects scenes.

What I remember most about Ultraseven compared to the other Ultraman series was a distinct LACK of Kaiju that I thought were really cool and/or badass. The only real exception, at least to me, was Eleking. And seeing as he has appeared in several subsequent Ultra-series, such as Ultraman Mebius and Ultra Galaxy, I'm gonna guess he ended up becoming the most popular Ultraseven Kaiju from the show's entire roster?
He is! It's also interesting is that he was supposed to show up in the unmade episode "Alien 15 + Monster 35" alongside various kaiju from Ultra Q and Ultraman that were revived by the Baltans.
Comparing the two, I think Ultraseven has the better peaks, but Ultraman felt like it had the better batting average, so to say. When I first watched it I was actually disappointed EVERY episode was an alien invasion, which felt very samey compared to the variety we got in Ultraman. But when it’s good, it’s VERY good. Between the two, I’d usually rather watch Ultraman, while Seven I have to be in the right mood for.
I feel Ultraman had lower lows than Seven, with episodes like The Pearl Oyster Defense Directive, The Terrifying Cosmic Rays, and The Phantom Snow Mountain that genuinely sucked ass. I agree that most of Seven's weaker episodes felt very bland and samey, but they never got bed-shittingly terrible like Ultraman (and Ultra Q, for that matter) did at their worst. Probably a big part of what makes Seven more palatable overall for me is also the lack of unbelievably annoying Showa Toku kids dominating everything like in the prior two shows, though I will concede Seven largely lacked in memorable kaiju and aliens unlike its forbears.

I never liked the Nonmalt episodes for Ultraseven and Heisei Ultraseven.
I feel like a lot of the episodes that tried to tackle morally complex issues tended to shoot themselves in the foot through clumsy writing and not really thinking the issue out. The Alien Pegassa episode is a perfect example; any sympathy I might feel for the Pegassa goes straight out the window when considering their actual actions and choices. I like that this show tried to be deeper and more mature and thought-provoking than the prior entries in the Ultra Series - the operative word being "tried".
@@triplehate6759 In the Nonmalt's first appearance, you had to deal with an obnoxious ghost child and them blowing up innocent villages and research stations, stealing atomic submarines and other things. Heisei Ultraseven had them making a big deal of the Omega Files wanting Seven to find and release them to the world only to then want them destroyed because they're idiots
