Not sure why but it sounds like he had the talking speed set to 80%. You can boost the speed. I play at about 140% speaking speed because even at normal it sounds like they're on ludes when compared to real life.
I know this is only so close to actual atc ops, but it's pretty cool to see an extended version of an actual controller problem solving and keeping calm after 15 different calls. I can hear your old "controller voice" poking through your entertainment voice. Thoroughly entertained.

In my experience at DIA not only does tower give the "hold short" order all the time, but when calling the tower they want a lot more data then the game is offering you.
Imagine what ground controllers would give to have that option irl... "451 Heavy you missed your turn here on Golf, I'm gonna go ahead and delete you."
Love the game. It gets frustrating when voice recognition doesn't pick up the commands and ai jumps in before you can correct it and you have to wait for ever for them before you can try again. Many incidents have occurred because of that.
I literally have said for example “magic998 taxi to runway 25r” and the game thinks I said “magic998 taxi to ramp via papa” Most of the time I just say continue taxi so that I don’t have to most likely repeat myself multiple times. it also jumps in and says: “negative, magic 998” before I can correct myself as well. Today I had a plane that pushed back the wrong way off of the taxiway and chose its own taxi instructions making it taxi towards a line of planes and cross the active runway (runway 27 at San Diego) It then was holding short of runway 27 and was cleared for takeoff about 20 times and wouldn’t move, I even tried typing a response. I also tried telling the plane to continue taxi about 10 times and it didn’t move. It read back but didn’t move. It was annoying me and just wouldn’t move at all, so I deleted it.
I miss the "hold short" instruction too, especially for a two player game, where I would imagine the handover be "taxi to this intersection and then call the other"
The little sighs and slight annoyances at the pilots... Yup. He is a tower controller lol as a pilot myself I sure as hell couldn't keep up with a big airport for an entire shift lol
Got this game a couple of years ago and living in San Diego near KSAN myself, I had to get the San Diego International addon. Always found it a fun challenge to juggle departures and arrivals on one runway and one main taxiway along with some occasional GA in the mix
My frustration with this game is when a ton of them ask for pushback approval and after giving a few their taxi clearance figuring out which is which but your use of the camera pan seems to be able to sort that out pretty good.
I've always wondered how a real flight controller would fair in these tower control sims. Just watching this gave me a headache...lol. However, by the end of the hour, I was able to follow what was going on pretty well. So I guess when it comes down to it, you just get used to the sheer insanity always going on. That being said, I'm glad I stayed away from this profession. I don't think I could handle it day in and day out. Props to you, sir, and great video!

i think you should add the extra add ons like the realistic callsigns and the other airports, also try multiplier with a friend or a subscriber who has the game.
Great stuff! I'd love to see some content of you trying out LAX on this game. A little bit of a different flavor but I think you would find ATC3/4(busier Japanese Airports) also interesting games, although the versions available on steam have fake airlines which is kind of a bummer.

probably - I know it is possible but I'm not overly familiar with the sim's systems. Its been a while since I played it. I think they're rolling out a new version or upgrade sometime soon. In 1995 I waited with bated breath for a sim named simply “Tower” to ship after numerous delays. When I finally got my hands on it it was awesome. A real looking tower ATC sim at last! Unfortunately it also had a fatal (imho) flaw. Once arrivals were on the ground you eventually had to issue a “taxi to parking” command with NO KNOWLEDGE OF WHERE “PARKING” WAS. And once the TTP command was given no further communication with that aircraft was possible. This inevitably led to two aircraft sitting nose to nose waiting for you to decide which one to literally delete. Talk about shattering the illusion. Here we are 26 years later and we have a sim with voice recognition… that has exactly the same problem. Ground controllers DO get to know which gate arriving aircraft are headed for, don’t they? The sim certainly does because the aircraft follows a path that is presumably not random. How hard could it be to communicate that to the player/controller?

Definitely, though if you're anything like me you also play videogames for the feeling of being able to help every single person you meet, and so you want this game just to say you're able to guide every single plane that lands and takes off, and the conflict of "oh god the difficulty" and "g u i d e the aircraft" has never been stronger

I'm gonna be honest I like to use your channel as a bit of living vicariously. I had surgery on my eye as a child. And I can now only see out of one of them at a time. This sadly has ruined my depth perception. It has also ruined my chances of becoming a pilot. (At least that is what I have been told). In any case these videos help me visualise what it might be like if I was a pilot.
There have been a number of one-eyed pilots, perhaps the most famous was Wiley Post. It does require jumping through some intense FAA hoops, and most of them lost an eye after they were already pilots, but it IS possible, or at least it has been possible.
It's really fun getting to see you doing what you did professionally. My only concern with you doing more videos of this game is that clear, calm conditions can be a bit boring. You make really good "pilot challenge" videos; what would make a good "controller challenge"?
definitely will if people are interested in the game. lots of opportunities for challenges but relatively few people understand the basics. its not as easy to see the 'challenge' in ATC as it is when you can observe someone flying something absurdly 🤣
It seems uncommon to request pushback and start from the ATC/Ground tower. That is usually a ramp/non-movement area operation handled by either private operators or a non-ATC ramp tower. (With the exception of gates that push straight onto a taxiway.)
@@NoDakExpress I did not mean the ramp is not controlled at all. I meant the ATC ground [tower] control is normally separate from from the non-movement area ramp control. On the pilot side, charts and approach plates usually list any ramp control as a separate frequency from ground or tower. (Along with the dashed yellow line.)
I tried this game but I missed some key instructions which was too much for me. They are: "TAXI TO ... CROSS RUNWAY" (So they don't want at an unused runway) "TAXI TO ... HOLD SHORT TWY/RWY" (for example, for me to make sure traffic is out of the way before they turn to ramp) "FOLLOW ... COMPANY" (not to be confused with "FOLLOW COMPANY", so I can choose who follows who) "AFTER ... PUSHBACK APPROVED" (wait for a plane to pass then pushback) "EXPECT DELAYED LANDING APPROVAL" (doesn't exist) "SLOW DOWN TO ...KTS" or "REDUCE TO MINIMUM APPROACH SPEED" or "SPEED UP APPROACH TO ... KTS" (so aircraft don't arrive too soon or too late. AKA compressions) Also, pilots overstepping other pilots is against practices. Which also annoyed me. I also wanted to go with more "outside USA" rules such as no anticipated landing clearances but I guess the game doesn't allow me to. It penalizes me if I want to try to use such verbiage
Feels so wrong - KPHL uses 27R for arrivals, 27L for departure. The reason is obvious. Landing AC can just enter terminal from almost right off the runway. Although Your config is easier for ground movement. But you would not want this config for a very busy arrival session. Give it a try you will see. Plus having traffic from landing on 27L taxiing on Y is not used as it is right off the departure end of 27R - Departures for 27L taxi via J N hold short 27R. The UPS terminal is located just south of rwy 27L with easy access to 27L

So the GPU usage thing is actually generally caused by devs not capping the framerate of menus, you're probably pushing over 9000 frames per second

40:00 I'm current tech ops and they still print out strips, though each tower/tracon seems to have their own unique method of rack and stack.

You can't start training if you are older than 30. You need to be sharp and not fighting too many old bad habits.

The GPU is at 100% at loading probably because the FPS is unlocked. Lock it in the Nvidia settings to prevent this

it doesn't show the exact gate but it does light up which section it is going to and you can also stop a taxiing plane if you need to.

Nodak, do you think that this kind of software would be useful in the training of ATCs? Get them used to the stress and juggling multiple aircraft in an environment with zero risk or stakes?

Last I knew the FAA Academy used a vaguely similar software system except that the airplanes were also controlled by real people
