Ian said that Gandalf and Gollum never met, they did in the books. There is a 60 year gap between Bilbo's Eleventy-oneth birthday, and Gandalf returning to explain to Frodo he has to leave Bag End, and in that time, Gandalf went off and tried to find Gollum, except "the enemy found him first". The reason Gandalf knows this, and knows that Gollum told them the name Baggins, is because he found Gollum.
Ian and Andy may not have met on the movie though. :P

@@NPA1001 well, it started out as motion capture, and developed into performence capture, which includes facial expression capture and few other things.
When he said that they met 20 years ago filming LOTR I suddenly grew a long white beard and felt I needed a cane to walk.

FINALLY! Recognition for one of the best actors working anywhere: Andy Serkis!! His work is so memorable that many of us leave the theaters already having memorized bits of dialog, whether he's portraying Gollum or Supreme Leader Snoke. He must be one of the most creative and visionary actors in the past several decades in his renowned ability to envision possibilities and go beyond preconceived limits of spandex ware, countless tracking dots applied on his face and frame to capture his motion, and the many other incarnations he has made real and often, more human and humane - thinking of Caesar - that the real thing. Like many others, I am so glad for him to receive this recognition!.
Yup. I love him also as Snoke in Star Wars.
he is the innovation, the person who inspire all of the motion capture happening right now. we can say that he is as remarkable as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton for beginning a new era.
He should have been nominated for Caesar - but of course the acting community hasn't quite caught up to technology

Andy is a criminally underrated actor and deserves every award under the sun. It's ridiculous that he isn't recognised for his incredible work more often.
Gollum, Kong, Caesar, Snoke, Captain Haddock, Ulysses Klaue and Alfred Pennyworth.
Whats wrong with ANDY?? Is he ill ?
Even tho ST of Star Wars is a bit of a mess I think his Snoke portrayal was also as great.

He actually did a video at some Oscar Ceremony for LOTR where they won an Oscar. Gollum came on screen and took the statuette and said "my precious".

This was an accolade well deserved and a long time coming.
Andy deserved an Oscar nomination and a possible win for his performance as Gollum in both The Two Towers and The Return of the King. I guess the Academy was not willing to see his motion-capture performance as a "real" performance. One of the most underrated artists of all time.
At long last this genius is getting the recognition he deserves......and he’s damn humble.

It's a joke, they only suggested he kept it under 90 so they have time for the whole show. They won't kick him off or take his award if he talks for longer.

Lets be real for a moment: Andy Serkis literally defined a new way we enjoy cinema. And it all started with Gollum who was bloody hell to act out due to his split personality to boot and he brought even more amazing charactres to the big screen since.
For those who doesn't know, he was only supposed to do voice acting for Gollum but the creators were so amazed by Andy who literally morphed into the character they decided to go with the Mocap :) Congrats Andy , you are the best

Hard to believe it's been 20 years since Lord of the Rings! I can't imagine anyone else playing Gandalf than Ian. Andy's Gollum was magical.

My parents met your mother, more than once (as a result of my mother being the organiser of 'The Towers Old Girls' Reunion') , attended her funeral, and (I believe) spoke with you briefly on that sad occasion.
I would just like to say well done. You deserve this award. I would also add that I saw your son, Louis, in 'The Kid Who would be King' and was impressed. I am sure you must be very proud of him.

Finally some recognition for an amazing talent.
I've been lucky enough to meet Andy serkis and he is such a genuine down to earth guy. I bumped into him in a Sainsbury's in my hometown about 10 minutes after coming out of the cinema from watching star wars force awakens. Worthwhile to say that I was shocked to see him, not only because I was the only person to recognise him but also because I believe him to be one of the most underrated actors of all time. Such a nice man who happily stood talking to me for a good 10 minutes while I had a real nerd moment but he was polite about it and it definitely made my Christmas that year!
Andy serkis totally deserves this adulation. Great Talent. Respect from Lahore sir!

It’s rare you get someone who is the definitive best at what they do, you have plenty of dramatic, comedic, or romantic actors who everyone will argue over as to who is the best but I don’t think anyone can argue that Andy Serkis is the absolute best mocap actor money can buy. It’s about bloody time he was recognised for it.
Andy Serkis truly deserve this award. Imagine he is already assigned as a 2ndUnit Director 20yrs ago for there movie LOTR and he acted as Gollum as well. What a talented man. Hopefully he and Ian will have an Oscar award too. They're both amazing actors. Love them both since LOTR. ❤❤❤

Actually thought for a minute that Andy coming out on crutches was him doing an improv motion capture performance that we could see later.
Anyways congrats on the award! You've really been a huge part of shaping my perspective on films since I was 11 and helping me understand the magic of cinema. Can't wait to see more great work in the future.

Awwww man...seeing his younges in tears kinda kicked it off for me now, and i'm crying happy tears.
Andy Serkis is God and Pioneer of Motion Capture, generations in future will read and talk about this guy, you should appreciate while he is alive now, people from future will be very jealous to us because we live with him now.

Ian Mckellen does a great presentation, though I kinda feel like it would mean more if Elijah Wood was presenting it, since they had so many scenes together
However elijah wood doesnt have the gravitas of either sir Ian nor of Gandalf
Sir Ian is really close to Andy still. When you watch the Hobbit's bonus scenes, it's clear they have a loving friendship. So it's still very meaningful.
Andy probably got to choose who he wanted to give him the award.
Also Ian is British
