The rankings in the video are subjective and intended to provoke interest and debate. They're not made up by me, they're taken from the 2010 survey by the Siena College Research Institute. You can find out more about it here: scri.siena.edu/us-presidents-study/ "Previous SCRI surveys of U.S. Presidents have been reported in Presidential Studies Quarterly, The New York Times, Washington Post, recent scholarly reviews of the presidents, and national news networks." @ryanboggs8685 Před 4 lety +57

@@Bloodraven332 it's subjective. I'm not an expert in American history. But I would rank Lincoln as first because, his administration held the union together. I understand that he did some morally dubious things to accomplish this. I also understand that the emancipation proclamation was politically motivated. That being said, he pushed the 14th ammendment through congress because he knew that the nation couldn't move forward unless slavery was forever abolished going forward. He did that because he knew, a nation divided against itself cannot stand. The northern and southern models were incompatible. Different cultures, different economic models. The southern system was of course morally abhorrent as well. I think he's the greatest politician in American history, perhaps world history, because he knew when to compromise and knew when to fight for the desired outcome. I think FDR is probably top five but Lincoln in number one, Washington as number two. The rest I think is open for debate

Washington was important but he turned his back on France and the Marquis de Lafayette. He was like a son to him yet he let him and his family languish in prison and his wife’s family be guillotined.

    • @person3070
      @person3070 Před rokem +15

He is worse than you make him look
-He created and endorsed Wilsonianism, a foreign policy doctrine which advocates for the spread of American values through foreign policy. It took the old isolationism and combined it with imperialism. This doctrine is what led to wars like the Vietnam War. Should be straight forward why imperialism is… bad to put it lightly
-Enabled segregation in government, delaying the civil rights movement.
-Prolonged women not being able to vote and treating them as second class citizens, for the first 6-7 years of his administration, at a time there were lots of people advocating for them being able to vote. Many of his presidential opponents endorsed the idea before him, such as Theodore Roosevelt, Eugene V. Debs, and Charles Evan Hughes.
-The Espionage Act, which is probably the worst piece of legislation to EVER pass Congress, was a law that pretty much ended the First Amendment, and was actually proposed by Wilson before the war. One of the worst uses of the act was displayed in Executive Order 2907.
This act provisioned, and I quote made it a crime to “willfully utter, print, write, or publish any disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language about the form of the Government of the United States”
-The Sedition Act, which, a lot like the Espionage Act, curbed free speech and broke the First Amendment. It made it illegal to say anything bad about the military
-Never implemented judicial recall even though one of his opponents in the 1912 eleciton, Theodore Roosevelt wanted to
      -Had a massive ego
-Horrible handling of the Spanish flu. He downplayed the worst pandemic in American history and never instituted federal safety measures to help curb the effectiveness of the flu. He never said a word about the pandemic. As a result of his carelessness regarding the Spanish Flu, around 650k Americans died. This was a time when the US population was around 106 million.
-Refused to help striking workers during the red scare
-Never did anything about race riots during the red summer in major cities like Chicago. Boston fell into anarchy for 3 days.
      -Occupied Haiti
-Invaded Russia with no purpose and goal. He sent thousands of people to serve in the tundra, completely forgetting their existence, and never achieving anything with the invasion. It is unclear why Wilson himself sent troops in the first place. Another criticism that could be placed on Wilson is that the invasion of Russia was good, however he failed to stop the Bolsheviks from seizing power. Because of Bolshevik presence in Russia, the USSR was established, and the USSR funded and backed many communist revolutions throughout the globe during the Cold War
-Failed to provide pay, benefits, or ranks to 18k people who served in the Army Corps of Nurses during World War 1
-Opposed the extension of the Rural Free Delivery System, a program that delivered mail directly to rural destinations
-During the Woodrow Wilson administration, there were thirty thousand offices outside of the Civil Service Law at an annual cost of $44 million dollars to the taxpayers of the country
-Failed impartially to enforce the Anti-Profiteering Laws enacted by the Republican Congress
-Failed to let go of his war time powers in due time after the First World War was over
-Created the federal reserve (some people think this is bad, which is why I put it here)
-Created income tax (some people think this is bad, which is why I put it here)
-Made Puerto-Ricans into citizens with the burden of fighting in US wars but without any of the actual benefits that come with the title, such as being able to vote in federal elections. Over 3k Puerto Ricans died in the First World War because of this
-Snubbed Ho Chi Minh when he asked for support for Vietnamese independence. This was when he was not communist, so had Wilson enabled independence for Vietnam, he may have stayed capitalist.
-Wilson's attorney general Palmer was maniacal in his efforts to silence those who disagreed with the administration. Night time raids and imprisonment were common. Wilson did nothing about it. These were referred to as the Palmer Raids and happened at the climax of the red scare, or red summer. Socialists, anarchists, and communists were persecuted, often without good justification, or any justification at all.
-Endorsed the American Protective League, also known as the APL. The APL was an organization which spied on American citizens. The organization had a presence in over 600 cities. At a time when an organization was actively breaking the right to privacy for millions of Americans, at a time when the federal government had to put an end to such an organization, Wilson did absolutely nothing about the organization.
-Blocked his son in law's presidential run so that Wilson could run for a third term. He ended up not running due to his faltering health and unpopularity. The fact that he tried to break the two term tradition, at a time when there was little reason to break it, shows how power hungry he was
-Failed to appease Irish-Americans with the British-Ireland situation. They believed he was being hypocritical in his statements about the independence of small nations, with his failure to support Ireland strongly enough in the treaty of versailles. This led to Irish-Americans voting against the Democratic Party in masses in 1920.
-Never implemented universal healthcare, even though his opponents, Theodore Roosevelt, and Eugene V Debs wanted to implement it during the election of 1912
-Standard Time Act, which received heavy backlash from farmers. It was later repealed because of how bad the legislation was, but Woodrow Wilson tried to veto the repeal
-Accepted a federal salary 300k higher than presidents do now. His salary during a term was 75k a year, which translates to 1.9 million dollars in 2019. Average salary per term nowadays is 1.6 million, or 400k a year.
-Let the other Allied nations do anything they wanted to do to Germany in return for the 14 points. Almost all of the 14 points were never honored or used. France and Britain punished Germany, instead of rebuilding them, which led to massive resentment in the central powers, and sowed the seeds for the Second World War
-He suffered a very serious stroke while in office which rendered him a bedridden invalid, nearly unable to speak. He was so power-mad, rather than resign due to his inability to perform his duties, he conspired with his wife to hide the extent of his illness and allowed his wife to essentially conduct presidential duties
-Never helped Ukraine gain independence during the peace talks, which allowed the Soviet Union to rule over Ukraine
-Ship and aircraft construction programs started during WW1 never got going before the end of the war, and both were plagued with inefficiency and scandal.
-Appointed James McReynolds to the Supreme Court. He was racist, anti Semitic, and opposed New Deal policies. While the New Deal was not the most effective way to go about the Great Depression, it still cut unemployment by 10%, and built much needed infrastructure improvements. He also struck down child labor laws and a federal minimum wage. It was reported that he was very self absorbed and hard to get along with. Some even believe him to be one of the worst Supreme Court justices to ever serve on the Supreme Court.
-Made Puerto ricans into citizens with the burden of fighting in US wars but without any of the actual benefits that come with the title, such as being able to vote for representatives, senators, or for the president.
-Appointed Josephus Daniels as Secretary of the Navy. Josephus Daniels, as was custom for the time, was incredibly racist, but what was not custom for the time was leading a coup to oust democratically elected officials from city government, solely for the color of their skin. He was a leading perpetrator of the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898, by purposefully creating exaggerated and made up stories to scare the locals into joining the insurrection. As a result of the insurrection, 100,000 registered voters fled the city. Between 60 and 250 citizens were murdered. Someone like this should have never been appointed to such a job, but Wilson appointed him anyway.
-He failed to do enough to protect German-Americans from discrimination during world war 1. German American homes, schools, and business were vandalized, and in some extreme cases, German Americans were lynched. The German language was all but nonexistent by the time World War 1 rolled around. People no longer identified as German American with fears of prejudice. With German American hysteria on the rise, he did nothing to protect them from discrimination. No lip service, no legislation, no executive orders, he did absolutely nothing. This led to German-Americans voting against the Democratic Party in the 1920 election as they did not feel they were treated as fairly as other groups, as evidenced by the huge swings in the midwest, where many German Americans lived.
-Proceeded over the depression of 1920-1921
Record high inflation of nearly 24%. Inflation was over 10% for each year of his last term. Because of inflation, the cost of living skyrocketed during the recession/depression.
Production fell 32.5%, a decline second only to the Great Depression in American history. Stock prices fell 47%. During his last few months in office, unemployment reached up to 12%. Worker wages and agricultural prices also fell
-The depression/recession of 1920-1921 would’ve lasted longer had Wilson stayed in charge of the country. He was actually vying for a renomination spot (as stated above) but was too unpopular and physically unfit for office, so he never ran again. The depression lasted 14 months under Wilson with no end in sight, but only lasted 4 months under his successor, Warren G. Harding, showing Wilson had no idea what he was doing, and that his economic policies were not what was needed in the country at that time

I would say Buchanan is the second worst president in American history, behind Wilson, because I think the guy endures a bit too much hate. With the vanilla tensions over slavery, the Compromise of 1850. and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, Dred Scott decision and the election of Lincoln, the Civil War was inevitable, and there was not really anything the president could do to stop it. Again, I still agree with all the criticisms of Buchanan, just maybe not to the degree that others would.

I have a comment/suggestion though. Please, if you do something like this again in the future (or for UK or any other country), leave off the rankings. Much as rankings create openings for discussion, they just don't function well for this format, in my opinion - and for someone coming into this as say, a student, it creates an (I hope) unintentional bias. While I admire his leadership in WWII, it is not the internment of Japanese Americans that bothers me the most as it almost makes people forget how horrible the Imperial Japanese were in the War. What bothers me is that his New Deal PROLONGED the Great Depression rather than ending it. Libertarian Tom Woods notes that Depressions are foreign without government interventionism. Furthermore, Libertarian Thomas J. DiLorenzo noted in his book "How Capitalism Saved America" (2004) that before the Great Depression, the US Government's "response" to recessions was Laissez-Faire ("let-do" in French) as in do nothing and let the people take care of themselves. Since the Great Depression, Americans have kept turning to the Government & politicians as saviors (if not political messiahs) instead of trusting Capitalism and learning how to take care of & help each other.

PlifalTV oh yeah, I’m one of those people. Normally I think with some presidents it’s unfair to rank them at all. Because they did both good and bad so they cancel out, like Jackson. But Coolidge didn’t do anything. Not good nor bad. So when everything was burning he just threw his arms in the air and said what ever not my problem. Yeah... he’s easily the worst presidents of all time 😆

I wish we had had enough technology when President Lincoln ruled America. I often wish to hear his voice or see him in videos. It doesn't me surprise to see the presidents who ranked in first three places since what they did for America will never be forgotten. Loved the detailed video of EPIC.

Having Theodore Roosevelt outside of anyone's top 3, shows a fundamental lack of understanding of just how significant the one piece of legislation the Antiquities Act of 1906 was. It was, for all intent and purposes, one of the most shaping Acts of the US today, and was so impactful that nearly every country after has some similar legislation as a copy. Theodore Roosevelt was multiple generations ahead of his time, preserving the land from industrialization, and preserving the history of those who lived on it.

Donald trump while not a good president definitely isn’t top ten worst worthy he should be in the thirties
Richard Nixon was a relatively good president but gets remembered poorly because of water gate
Herbert Hoover should be lower as he is mostly responsible for the Great Depression
Thomas Jefferson did good things but was mostly hypocritical and all the good was either unintentional or unclear so it brings into question if someone should be judged based off what they did or what they intended to do

Wilson's "reforms" actually aided in the expansion of racial segregation. Also, his new world order would have been unconstitutional which is why it was blocked. Andrew Johnson was a flaming racist behind closed doors; in public, however, he put on a facade of progressivism. His programs were designed to keep the poor and destitute reliant on the government without actually helping most. This way, he hoped to gain voters for the Democratic party without accomplishing any real progress. As for Obama, his healthcare program has made matters worse for my family and I, not better.
