The rankings in the video are subjective and intended to provoke interest and debate. They're not made up by me, they're taken from the 2010 survey by the Siena College Research Institute. You can find out more about it here: scri.siena.edu/us-presidents-study/ "Previous SCRI surveys of U.S. Presidents have been reported in Presidential Studies Quarterly, The New York Times, Washington Post, recent scholarly reviews of the presidents, and national news networks." You can also see their new rankings based on the 2018 survey...
I'm surprised the institute ranked wilson so highly.
Wilson is easily the must harmful and dangerous President we ever had. Glad you guys reinforce that the rankings are not yours.
This ranking is laughable
Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Reagan , Clinton, Theodore Roosevelt, Madison, Quincy Adam, US Grant should be in the top 10
Ok ba is that you can work out your life in a
Hi sweet girl hope your birthday
Woodrow Wilson in the top 10 is insane. The damage that he did to our country and the office of President is still felt today.
Couldn’t agree more
what did he do
@Gaurav Kukreja
I don’t know much about Wilson, but I do know he enabled racist policies that set back years of progress. He also got us into WW1.
@@professormadhattgaming583an't really defend the first one, but the 2nd one was kinda an inevitability. Bill Clinton being 13 is definately weird though, would've at least put him as an average president.

Would love a version of this with the UK Monarchy (40 since William the Conqueror, so around the same number of presidents). Or maybe even the UK Prime Ministers.

Samuel Melcher Yeah I've seen it. I'd prefer something like this though, as while this is quite short, I think Grey's one was too... _brief_
***** That's what I was thinking, but honestly from the 1700's (on the Wikipedia list) it'll be a bit longer than the Presidents one.
@eurosensazion: No one? Speak for yourself.
FDR is ranked higher than Washington and Lincoln???
Do you not know what he did. I agree with the rankings somewhat. I dont like how they based the best off their accomplishments and dodnt apply their flaws because os sp Andrew Jackson and more would be nuch would be lower and Barak Obama and Reagan should be higher.
@@Bloodraven332 it's subjective. I'm not an expert in American history. But I would rank Lincoln as first because, his administration held the union together. I understand that he did some morally dubious things to accomplish this. I also understand that the emancipation proclamation was politically motivated. That being said, he pushed the 14th ammendment through congress because he knew that the nation couldn't move forward unless slavery was forever abolished going forward. He did that because he knew, a nation divided against itself cannot stand. The northern and southern models were incompatible. Different cultures, different economic models. The southern system was of course morally abhorrent as well. I think he's the greatest politician in American history, perhaps world history, because he knew when to compromise and knew when to fight for the desired outcome. I think FDR is probably top five but Lincoln in number one, Washington as number two. The rest I think is open for debate
He won WWII, thanks to that US is the sole military and economic superpower.
FDR did more for the country. Leading through the Great Depression (other countries who went through it ended up with Hitler and Stalin so yeah) won WW2, made America the world only super power, gave hope to people, etc.
Washington was important but he turned his back on France and the Marquis de Lafayette. He was like a son to him yet he let him and his family languish in prison and his wife’s family be guillotined.
Without Lafayette and France there would have been no US.
FDR - The man who knew in advance about Pearl Harbor but allowed it to happen.
I’m in the thumbnail bro

He fought in ww1 y’know and he also started invasions against Pre nazi germany
@@sunsetplayz5534 Woodrow Wilson was no where near the battle Field in ww1 he was president during it
Calvin Coolidge: Way underrated.
wasn't he criticized for being inactive during the great mississippi flood?
Yes, he was. I wish MORE presidents would refrain from making a speech (or, now, sending a Tweet) every time something bad happens somewhere. The president is not supposed to be a nanny, tucking us in and assuring us that everything will be okay, lest we can't get to sleep. Obama even delivered prepared remarks on Trayvon Martin, for Christ's sake -- like that actually helped anything.
Coolidge Dollar Yeah why should a president comment on a massive natural disaster?
Coolidge Dollar no, humans naturally need a leader.. Its very important for our president to lead the way with confidence and certainty..the population gets motivated and confident in times of war with a few great words from our great leaders.. That's why many leaders in humanities existence are quoted for the rest of time until we perish
Also Woodrow Wilson is Way overrated.
Ranking the presidents is a hopelessly subjective exercise because it necessarily requires value judgments, and therefore, bias. This ranking, is certainly no exception.
Well if people are smart enough they will understand it is very subjective

In what world would TR be ranked higher than Lincoln and Kennedy higher than Johnson 😂
@@lainewoolcock1335 Considering TR he spent more time in office he naturally accomplished more that's why. Kennedy is quite high for the short period he was in.

Love Teddy Roosevelt. Interesting that the two Roosevelts are ranked 1 and 2
Roosevelt was mildly retarded, a hard-core racist and imperialist stooge for the British.

Hey guys! Five dollar patron here, just wanted to say great response time with uploading the edited video. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to little things like that. Greatly appreciated, keep it up!
Wilson is 8th! The same guy who Segregated the south gave rise to the second kkk and failed to his point across to eroupe to try and ensure that a second world war was impossible. One of the few laws I agree with was giving women the right to vote.
He actually resisted the law which made women able to vote. Horrible president
He is worse than you make him look
-He created and endorsed Wilsonianism, a foreign policy doctrine which advocates for the spread of American values through foreign policy. It took the old isolationism and combined it with imperialism. This doctrine is what led to wars like the Vietnam War. Should be straight forward why imperialism is… bad to put it lightly
-Enabled segregation in government, delaying the civil rights movement.
-Prolonged women not being able to vote and treating them as second class citizens, for the first 6-7 years of his administration, at a time there were lots of people advocating for them being able to vote. Many of his presidential opponents endorsed the idea before him, such as Theodore Roosevelt, Eugene V. Debs, and Charles Evan Hughes.
-The Espionage Act, which is probably the worst piece of legislation to EVER pass Congress, was a law that pretty much ended the First Amendment, and was actually proposed by Wilson before the war. One of the worst uses of the act was displayed in Executive Order 2907.
This act provisioned, and I quote made it a crime to “willfully utter, print, write, or publish any disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language about the form of the Government of the United States”
-The Sedition Act, which, a lot like the Espionage Act, curbed free speech and broke the First Amendment. It made it illegal to say anything bad about the military
-Never implemented judicial recall even though one of his opponents in the 1912 eleciton, Theodore Roosevelt wanted to
-Had a massive ego
-Horrible handling of the Spanish flu. He downplayed the worst pandemic in American history and never instituted federal safety measures to help curb the effectiveness of the flu. He never said a word about the pandemic. As a result of his carelessness regarding the Spanish Flu, around 650k Americans died. This was a time when the US population was around 106 million.
-Refused to help striking workers during the red scare
-Never did anything about race riots during the red summer in major cities like Chicago. Boston fell into anarchy for 3 days.
-Occupied Haiti
-Invaded Russia with no purpose and goal. He sent thousands of people to serve in the tundra, completely forgetting their existence, and never achieving anything with the invasion. It is unclear why Wilson himself sent troops in the first place. Another criticism that could be placed on Wilson is that the invasion of Russia was good, however he failed to stop the Bolsheviks from seizing power. Because of Bolshevik presence in Russia, the USSR was established, and the USSR funded and backed many communist revolutions throughout the globe during the Cold War
-Failed to provide pay, benefits, or ranks to 18k people who served in the Army Corps of Nurses during World War 1
-Opposed the extension of the Rural Free Delivery System, a program that delivered mail directly to rural destinations
-During the Woodrow Wilson administration, there were thirty thousand offices outside of the Civil Service Law at an annual cost of $44 million dollars to the taxpayers of the country
-Failed impartially to enforce the Anti-Profiteering Laws enacted by the Republican Congress
-Failed to let go of his war time powers in due time after the First World War was over
-Created the federal reserve (some people think this is bad, which is why I put it here)
-Created income tax (some people think this is bad, which is why I put it here)
-Made Puerto-Ricans into citizens with the burden of fighting in US wars but without any of the actual benefits that come with the title, such as being able to vote in federal elections. Over 3k Puerto Ricans died in the First World War because of this
-Snubbed Ho Chi Minh when he asked for support for Vietnamese independence. This was when he was not communist, so had Wilson enabled independence for Vietnam, he may have stayed capitalist.
-Wilson's attorney general Palmer was maniacal in his efforts to silence those who disagreed with the administration. Night time raids and imprisonment were common. Wilson did nothing about it. These were referred to as the Palmer Raids and happened at the climax of the red scare, or red summer. Socialists, anarchists, and communists were persecuted, often without good justification, or any justification at all.
-Endorsed the American Protective League, also known as the APL. The APL was an organization which spied on American citizens. The organization had a presence in over 600 cities. At a time when an organization was actively breaking the right to privacy for millions of Americans, at a time when the federal government had to put an end to such an organization, Wilson did absolutely nothing about the organization.
-Blocked his son in law's presidential run so that Wilson could run for a third term. He ended up not running due to his faltering health and unpopularity. The fact that he tried to break the two term tradition, at a time when there was little reason to break it, shows how power hungry he was
-Failed to appease Irish-Americans with the British-Ireland situation. They believed he was being hypocritical in his statements about the independence of small nations, with his failure to support Ireland strongly enough in the treaty of versailles. This led to Irish-Americans voting against the Democratic Party in masses in 1920. -Never implemented universal healthcare, even though his opponents, Theodore Roosevelt, and Eugene V Debs wanted to implement it during the election of 1912
-Standard Time Act, which received heavy backlash from farmers. It was later repealed because of how bad the legislation was, but Woodrow Wilson tried to veto the repeal
-Accepted a federal salary 300k higher than presidents do now. His salary during a term was 75k a year, which translates to 1.9 million dollars in 2019. Average salary per term nowadays is 1.6 million, or 400k a year.
-Let the other Allied nations do anything they wanted to do to Germany in return for the 14 points. Almost all of the 14 points were never honored or used. France and Britain punished Germany, instead of rebuilding them, which led to massive resentment in the central powers, and sowed the seeds for the Second World War
-He suffered a very serious stroke while in office which rendered him a bedridden invalid, nearly unable to speak. He was so power-mad, rather than resign due to his inability to perform his duties, he conspired with his wife to hide the extent of his illness and allowed his wife to essentially conduct presidential duties
-Never helped Ukraine gain independence during the peace talks, which allowed the Soviet Union to rule over Ukraine
-Ship and aircraft construction programs started during WW1 never got going before the end of the war, and both were plagued with inefficiency and scandal.
-Appointed James McReynolds to the Supreme Court. He was racist, anti Semitic, and opposed New Deal policies. While the New Deal was not the most effective way to go about the Great Depression, it still cut unemployment by 10%, and built much needed infrastructure improvements. He also struck down child labor laws and a federal minimum wage. It was reported that he was very self absorbed and hard to get along with. Some even believe him to be one of the worst Supreme Court justices to ever serve on the Supreme Court.
-Made Puerto ricans into citizens with the burden of fighting in US wars but without any of the actual benefits that come with the title, such as being able to vote for representatives, senators, or for the president.
-Appointed Josephus Daniels as Secretary of the Navy. Josephus Daniels, as was custom for the time, was incredibly racist, but what was not custom for the time was leading a coup to oust democratically elected officials from city government, solely for the color of their skin. He was a leading perpetrator of the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898, by purposefully creating exaggerated and made up stories to scare the locals into joining the insurrection. As a result of the insurrection, 100,000 registered voters fled the city. Between 60 and 250 citizens were murdered. Someone like this should have never been appointed to such a job, but Wilson appointed him anyway.
-He failed to do enough to protect German-Americans from discrimination during world war 1. German American homes, schools, and business were vandalized, and in some extreme cases, German Americans were lynched. The German language was all but nonexistent by the time World War 1 rolled around. People no longer identified as German American with fears of prejudice. With German American hysteria on the rise, he did nothing to protect them from discrimination. No lip service, no legislation, no executive orders, he did absolutely nothing. This led to German-Americans voting against the Democratic Party in the 1920 election as they did not feel they were treated as fairly as other groups, as evidenced by the huge swings in the midwest, where many German Americans lived.
-Proceeded over the depression of 1920-1921
Record high inflation of nearly 24%. Inflation was over 10% for each year of his last term. Because of inflation, the cost of living skyrocketed during the recession/depression.
Production fell 32.5%, a decline second only to the Great Depression in American history. Stock prices fell 47%. During his last few months in office, unemployment reached up to 12%. Worker wages and agricultural prices also fell
-The depression/recession of 1920-1921 would’ve lasted longer had Wilson stayed in charge of the country. He was actually vying for a renomination spot (as stated above) but was too unpopular and physically unfit for office, so he never ran again. The depression lasted 14 months under Wilson with no end in sight, but only lasted 4 months under his successor, Warren G. Harding, showing Wilson had no idea what he was doing, and that his economic policies were not what was needed in the country at that time
@@franklinpierce176 What's wrong with that?
@@person3070 Yes, I agree, but he is my number third worst president. Trump is worse than him, Johnson, and Buchanan.
@@matthewhedrichjr.5445
I would say Buchanan is the second worst president in American history, behind Wilson, because I think the guy endures a bit too much hate. With the vanilla tensions over slavery, the Compromise of 1850. and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, Dred Scott decision and the election of Lincoln, the Civil War was inevitable, and there was not really anything the president could do to stop it. Again, I still agree with all the criticisms of Buchanan, just maybe not to the degree that others would.
Regardless of all those things, I respect your opinion
W Wilson signing in the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 is enough to put him in the bottom 5. #8 is ridiculous

Epic History, I'm a fan of well, all your other videos. In particular your history of Russia, because it's deep enough to teach me things and left me wanting to know more as well delivered in a quality and manner hard to find. I have a comment/suggestion though. Please, if you do something like this again in the future (or for UK or any other country), leave off the rankings. Much as rankings create openings for discussion, they just don't function well for this format, in my opinion - and for someone coming into this as say, a student, it creates an (I hope) unintentional bias. Thanks always, keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback Craig. I can see that including the rankings has divided the audience. I think it may have helped to have made the source of the rankings even more clear, and to highlight that they are of course no more than the opinions of a group of historians. But I still think they're of interest, even if you don't agree with the results (results which will certainly change the next time they carry out the same survey). But I'll bear it in mind for future productions.
I agree with Craig, best to leave out the rankings. Perhaps for future videos leave the links to the various opinions of different groups in the notes on the video and those who are interested to find out more can look below to see how they ranked. FDR doesnt belong in the top 3. Maybe top 10. This ranking is maybe the worst ive ever seen.
Not his ranking
These days I rank him lower somewhere in the Top 10 at best. While I admire his leadership in WWII, it is not the internment of Japanese Americans that bothers me the most as it almost makes people forget how horrible the Imperial Japanese were in the War. What bothers me is that his New Deal PROLONGED the Great Depression rather than ending it. Libertarian Tom Woods notes that Depressions are foreign without government interventionism. Furthermore, Libertarian Thomas J. DiLorenzo noted in his book "How Capitalism Saved America" (2004) that before the Great Depression, the US Government's "response" to recessions was Laissez-Faire ("let-do" in French) as in do nothing and let the people take care of themselves. Since the Great Depression, Americans have kept turning to the Government & politicians as saviors (if not political messiahs) instead of trusting Capitalism and learning how to take care of & help each other.

Karl Marx?
I don't know man, if it were Karl Marx I don't think that Regan would be almost on par with Obama and the guy responsible for the trail of tears wouldn't be above within the top 20. Any list like that is pretty silly. Like its easy to compare the leadership of somebody in the 1820's to the 1950's.
One Smooth Stone ya unfortunately this ranking system (along with probably any Presidential ranking system) focused far too much on policy. Therefore it is always going to be influenced by the political opinions of those who compiled the list. We should rank our Presidents based off of how well they upheld the Oath of Office. Unfortunately that isn't as "sexy" of a list to make

Gives me just enough knowledge about each President to end up in a wikipedia tunnel to find out more (e.g. F.Pierce's son Benjamin's death via train accident...found a few great newspaper clippings from the era from eyewitness accounts, so awesome).
My 2 cents: Of course people are going to disagree with the rankings, everyone is subject to bias in one way or another. If I had to comment, I'd say Lincoln #1, FDR #2, Washington #3, Jefferson #4, T.Roosevelt #5. Also, I definitely agree with Kings & Queens of Britain video request, would be very interesting.

This is a good, brief analysis of each President, but I disagree on the ranking system. The ranking is largely subjective, depending on the individual.

I noticed that trend too. Apparently modern Americans want to emulate their mother country's nanny government. Want to get a high ranking as president? All you have to do is encroach on the ideals that the country was founded on and you're good to go.

Seeing your ranking of Wilson and FDR, I see the slant you have in presidents.
Kennedy on Rank 11 ??? really ?????
He's by far the most overrated President in US history. After his plethora of personal scandals, voter fraud, failing of the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile crisis I don't understand why everyone thinks he's great. If he wasn't assassinated he probably wouldn't have been reelected and went down as poor President.
memie lol championed civil rights and wanted to withdraw our forces from Vietnam.
Both of you idiots, Kennedy escalated the Vietnam War which is why he failed to win it. I also don't see how Nixon was a war hawk after he ended the Vietnam war. If Watergate never happened Nixon would have gone down as one of the top 10 President in history. I also don't see how JFK was better than Reagan. He ended the cold war which JFK failed to do cut unemployment in half and created 16 million jobs.
@J P how is increasing troops by 2000% advocating peace
@@memielol4918 Reagan could not have ended it without the one and only, Gorbachev!
You should do a WW2 series
Stops just in time. Great job.
Of course, rankings are debatable and open to personal interpretations. However, I'm pleased to see as many comments from people having issue with these rankings.
It would be awesome if you made epic history about ww2
FDR's New Deal didn't get us out of the Depression , WW2 did !
Jeff Dwyer that’s what I keep saying! We needed to get the economy going and when we went to war. Jobs were created to supply the military and the economy boomed
Joe Rutherford When FDR took office, unemployment was at 37%. When we joined the war, it was at 14%. Sure, joining the war helped the percent drop even more, but FDR's New Deal did end up helping out before that.
It said "helped lift America out of the Depression" - which it did, notwithstanding some backsliding under pressure from Republicans before economic recovery really took off with the onset of WWII.
^---- This dude understands economics.
@@MRayner59 So it was the Republicans. I get it.
What is the theme song in the start of the video ?
What does the state mean in the bottom left corner?
The Roosevelts were loved most.
I personally disagree with the ranking from Siena Research Institute lol! Let there be another ranking system from the audience to cast a vote online! I bet there be a big difference ;)
what's that music in the last during president ranking? Any link please?
How do you guys determine the rankings?
That 20017 was giving me nightmares!
Wanna hear a worse nightmare? You'll have to choose between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump👊
Emmanuil Haniotis and no more elections right?
Terrible dilemma.
Wanna hear a EVEN worse nightmare? Yeah donald won.
Dan hatman Worse than Hillary but I only had an actual nightmare about her.. She would still be madam-president until 20017.. after she have been transformed into a cyborg ..(cogs were falling off her and everything.. in my dream.. scary)
Coolidge 29 and Roosevelt 1. Oh come on thats a joke.
I don't know much about Coolidge, but why is FDR at #1 a joke? He's pretty easily top 5, although one could argue the order.
People in the comments complaining about Coolidge not being high enough. Did you ever stop to think there might be a reason as to why he hasn't been ranked higher?
PlifalTV oh yeah, I’m one of those people. Normally I think with some presidents it’s unfair to rank them at all. Because they did both good and bad so they cancel out, like Jackson. But Coolidge didn’t do anything. Not good nor bad. So when everything was burning he just threw his arms in the air and said what ever not my problem. Yeah... he’s easily the worst presidents of all time 😆
@@plifal7799 People who like Coolidge are the people who like the government to do nothing. They are mostly Libertarians. He represents what they would like in government. That's why he will be high on their list. For the rest, he was nothing special. Good nor bad.
Coolidge crashed the economy and FDR fixed it. Pretty fair to me
I wish we had had enough technology when President Lincoln ruled America. I often wish to hear his voice or see him in videos. It doesn't me surprise to see the presidents who ranked in first three places since what they did for America will never be forgotten. Loved the detailed video of EPIC.
Your ranking is highly, highly debatable.
You got the top five right, just in the wrong order.
5) Roosevelt
4) Jefferson
3) FDR
2) Washington
1) Lincoln
Alan Smith teddy over fdr
Having Theodore Roosevelt outside of anyone's top 3, shows a fundamental lack of understanding of just how significant the one piece of legislation the Antiquities Act of 1906 was. It was, for all intent and purposes, one of the most shaping Acts of the US today, and was so impactful that nearly every country after has some similar legislation as a copy. Theodore Roosevelt was multiple generations ahead of his time, preserving the land from industrialization, and preserving the history of those who lived on it.
@@Imabirdhaww - While you certainly have a right to your opinion, I have a degree in history and consider myself well educated and have a full understanding of the effects that presidents have on the country at the time of their presidency and subsequent generations.

Andrew Johnson is severely overhated he isn’t nearly as bad as he is put on this list.
Donald trump while not a good president definitely isn’t top ten worst worthy he should be in the thirties
Richard Nixon was a relatively good president but gets remembered poorly because of water gate
Herbert Hoover should be lower as he is mostly responsible for the Great Depression
Thomas Jefferson did good things but was mostly hypocritical and all the good was either unintentional or unclear so it brings into question if someone should be judged based off what they did or what they intended to do
This music is amazing
What’s the background song called at 7:21?
I never understood how Wilson is ranked high when he was terrible
Wilson's "reforms" actually aided in the expansion of racial segregation. Also, his new world order would have been unconstitutional which is why it was blocked. Andrew Johnson was a flaming racist behind closed doors; in public, however, he put on a facade of progressivism. His programs were designed to keep the poor and destitute reliant on the government without actually helping most. This way, he hoped to gain voters for the Democratic party without accomplishing any real progress. As for Obama, his healthcare program has made matters worse for my family and I, not better.
This music is dope>>...are these presidents or Spartans marching in slow motion ?
This makes me wanna make my own ranking of the US presidents
