On this one I look at the amazing story of Certs mints and how they quietly disappeared from store shelves. I look at the pop culture references of this product on Perfect Strangers, The Simpson, Good Times and Beavis and Butthead! - Zábava
It took 60 years and the death of Certs before someone explained what Retsyn was to me, thank you pointless internet man.
😂That's what I am here for! Thanks for watching!!!
@@PointlessNostalgia”Retsyn” was never banned. Retsyn was a made up word for a mixture of copper gluconate, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, and flavoring. Hydrogenated fats were voluntarily taken off the market because of transfats and risks they posed toward heart disease. Nothing was ever banned, the product simply became unprofitable and obsolete.

definitely not pointless ☺️
@@colorbugoriginals4457 You got that right! 😃
I forgot about CERTS. And now I miss them.
Right?😂
The cool mint drops 😢
the testicle shrinking thing get me out of it
I completely forgot about Velamints!
@@perromercenario0040 At 50, I don't care
I remember eating the original certs around 1970. I was just a little kid, but thought they were the most delicious thing ever invented. I'm an old man now, and can confirm that the special flavor they had has never been reproduced.
Yeah, it was something special
I love how they quietly disappeared them without mentioning the cancer and nerve damage they've been doing for 50 years.
I know!
Because there was no cancer or nerve damage, and this channel is full of shit.
I did not know Certs was no more. I haven't had them since the 90s, so I can't say that I miss them. Why am I not surprised that Retsyn turned out to be toxic.
😂😂😂 yeah. Retsyn sounds like a chemical weapon.
@@PointlessNostalgia ב''ה, not particularly awful if what killed it was relying on the old formulation of Crisco when we all ate baked-goods quantities of Crisco and have to question our arteries for it.
Why they didn't just go water soluble though, can't explain.
But it was a TRACE of the stuff. If you just eat one mint, randomly, like once a week or month, that isn’t enough to cause anything.
Retsyn wasn't toxic
There’s no such thing as “Retsyn”, it’s a made up word for a combination of ingredients that included partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil. It was the cottonseed oil that was taken off the market as of 2018 as were all hydrogenated oil products because of trans fats. It was voluntary, nothing was ever banned. This guy at this channel is a clickbaiting buIIshitter.
I never knew they were discontinued.
Yeah, the went away so quietly! For such an established brand it's surprising.
Been out of the country for 17 years, didn’t know they were eliminated. My girlfriend found the Leggs eggs good for darning who’ll socks which at times were hard to find with all of the synthetic stuff on the market.
Ah! That is useful!
Not that i ever looked for them recently, but it is weird how quietly these disappeared, like Shark Bites or Cheez Waffies before them!
Cheez Waffles! Man, we lost so many good ones!
Orbeez!
I now understand that episode of GI Joe
Yep! Dreadnoks really like that Retsyn!
Certs were may favorite growing up in the 80s. They were also magical for me because if I had a sore throat, if I took a certs, swallowing the saliva stopped the soreness temporarily.
Oh yeah! They are good for that!
Never mind Certs, now I want some Cocoamint Velamints.
I really miss those! And I remember liking the licorice flavor, but I can't imagine the taste anymore.
@@PointlessNostalgia Yeah, those were great. I could go for some licorice Velamints.
pür gum makes a good chocolate mint one 😊
You DO realize they took the sugar out, right?
No wonder you can't find anything good, they just keep getting rid instead of adapting to times and laws.
Yeah, surprising to see such an established name abandoned.
But...but...but...it was only a DROP of Retsyn. Did they not see the commercials?
Don’t forget *glistening*
😂😂
Epic!! I loved both of those... They had such a unique flavor and now I know why. Thanks Professor!
Yeah, I miss em!
I miss Certs.
Yep. So glad you watched the video!
Man that was the BEST!! Funny I thought about Certs all out of the blue the other day! On another note you are looking great Guy and I love that shirt you are sporting!
Thank you!! Glad you watched it.
I have so many Father’s Day shirts like that, lol.
Dermott from Venture Brothers - "Short N’ Sassy shampoo? Do they even make that anymore?
Um no. Because if you mix Short N’ Sassy with the active ingredients in Certs, which is retsin… you get napalm. You lather that up and it’s goodbye to most of your face."
Nice Venture Bros reference!
✌️💀✌️
Oh that’s good! I didn’t know that reference!
@@PointlessNostalgia If you haven't heard of it, Venture Bros is a great adult cartoon, filled with a ton a nostalgia-based satire. It takes some very dark and hilarious spins on characters like Johnny Quest. Highly recommend
Certs makes me think of my grandma....she would hand me the roll from her purse before church service.
Every grandma had some in her purse. So wonderful!
no bad breath allowed in church, and certainly not in heaven.
@@rainbowranddy 😆
@@rainbowranddy I've also heard, "in heaven there is no beer."
Oh no! I loved them as a kid! My grandpa got them all the time.
Oh yeah, mine too!
@@PointlessNostalgia my grandpa was born in 1903. He was very old when I was born, in his 70s when he died, and like a dad to me. I really miss him. When something like Certs, Sen-Sen, Old Spice cologne, Dixie Cups, Pennzoil, Brylcreem, Resinol, Tic Tacs, or what is now politely called Brazil Nuts catches my eye, it triggers fond memories of him being alive and a great role model. I miss him taking Certs out of his jacket pocket, unpeeling the folded over top that prevents dust getting on top, taking one for himself and offering me to dig out one with my fingernail for myself before putting them back into his pocket. I think I miss Certs more because of it bringing back lost memories…I had forgotten all bout that until you shared this video. Thank you for helping me remember him.
@@davidthedeaf Oh wow Sen-Sen is such a throwback!
I had no idea what either of these things were before watching this video. Very entertaining 2AM content, subscribed!
Same here 😅?🎉
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it. It’s definitely 2am content!
Thanks for watching!
Yeah, yeah! I always ate the fruit version,no way those were mints, especially since i ate em' like candy!
They were so good!
I always wondered what happened to Certs. One day it was there in the next day it was gone.
Yep. Such a well known name and it disappeared so quickly
...AND, IT'S GONE...
Like Rolaids.
Gentle correction on pronunciation. Partially Hydrogenated, not hydrated. Used to turn liquid oil to a solid for use in shelf-stable products, mainly because of the cost savings associated with using cheap oils.
Thank you! I appreciate the correction! That makes sense.
I'm gonna love this channel this is the place for people like me who randomly have the caramello commercial start playing in their brain 😂
😂😂 And now it’s playing in my head!! So great!
I had completely forgotten about Certs.
Yeah, a real blast from the past!
It's weird that my parents always had breath mints, and I never do! I guess they had to cover up the odor of drinking Sanka coffee and smoking cigarettes all day. I just don't need them. I drink water, don't smoke & never talk to ppl!
Cherry certs were sooo good.
Haha. It’s true, breath mints and cigs went hand in hand back then!
I have actually missed them, but its good to know why they are gone.
I remember sneaking them out of my Moms purse when I was little, and Denteen Gum.
This is what Im talking about, Ive been looking for a channel like this for a long time!!!
👍👍
Oh yeah. That gum was so great. I think that was the gum Big Red called “little cinnamon gum” in the ads! Definitely checking out some of those ads tonight!
Thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it!!
They shouldn't have discontinued them. Sure there are new things, but they clearly failed to see the influence of the retro market. Change the recipe, make sure it tastes the same, and keep the packaging, people would buy them in droves. I don't think any of the newer things are better than Certs was.
This is so true.
Especially since the hydrogenated cottonseed oil was probably just a carrier - I highly doubt it impacted the flavor at all
@@MissaBrevis oh interesting
We may very well see a new formulated Certs, in retro packaging, in the future. Nostalgia is a powerful commodity! A recent visit to a big candy store had me paying $6 for a single roll of butterum Lifesavers. Someone will buy the rights and remake them if they think they can turn a profit.
i used to stuff my mom's empty Leggs eggs with lil green solders lol
Damn, that candy mint really captured our imagination
Yeah, it was a simpler time
My local store may have some; they're a time capsule
You should check!
New Shimmer's a floor wax and a dessert topping!
🤣🤣🤣
Throw back to an SNL skit? I remember those, just that old.
Wow, there's a brand I forgot about in a long time.
Also Binaca blast! Damn dude! Everyone had that stuff in middle school.
Oh yeah! We all smelled like Drakaar Noir and Binaca at my school. 😂😂
@@PointlessNostalgia everyone had that and their Snapple in the glass bottle
Discovered Binaca in 1968 in junior high school right there with Jade East after shave. Watch out, girls!
@@user-iv5gy3rc2b 🤣
I always kinda figured that I wasn't going to find Retsyn(tm) on the periodic table of the elements. Probably a good idea it's gone.
Yes. Lol
Darn, I was guessing it was the copper gluconate that was banned. Now it's up to one of those companies that revives dead brands, only they'll have to do some reformulation work, which is usually a deal killer. I also wonder if the trademark is being kept alive by the last company to make them, by occasionally selling a related product by that name.
Right?!? That just sounds poisonous!
I miss the cool mint drops so much!
in the 60's I was in many fights arguing with other roughnecks that Certs was a breath mint and not a candy mint- I won many battles but lost many as well and have the scars to prove it....two, two...too many fights. yeah, it was either have fresh breath and shrinked manhood or bad breath and no gal to kiss.
Yeah, that was an unexpected side effect for sure!
Aww. I bought a whole bunch a few years ago and didn't realize they were gone from the shelfs! I'll have to find if I have any left.
Oh! I hope you find one!
damn, cottonseed oil can disrupt the menstrual cycle? anyone got a bulk package of these sitting around I can buy?
😂
Never mind all the soy that effeminates boys. But perhaps that's intentional.
Damn, I haven't thought about Certs for decades....
Yeah. Blast from the past!
my dream is to own one of those big red bull coolers thats shaped like a red bul lcan
I almost bought one at a gas station recently!
Wasn't that the mint you could bite for a spark?
Yes! Although it also works with Breath Savers and Life Savers from what I understand.
It's specifically the wintergreen flavoring that makes the spark in the dark.
"Flavoring"
😂 That's always a scary mystery in an ingredient list.
Question: How many CERTS does one need to consume in how much time for the cottonseed oil to have an effect? I'm thinking more of an effect than other environmental factors.
Yeah, I think you would need to eat hundreds a day. It was only a drop of Retsyn which was only partially cottonseed oil.
That sounds like a question for a certain cartoon owl 🦉 😊
ngl the mini 50 pack green creditcard packs got me thru highschool and promptly into newports at 18 SMH
Yeah, they were convenient.
I had no idea what a Certs was but thanks, this was great!
I am so glad to hear that! Thanks for watching!
I liked CERTS. Like chewing gum, they were a part of almost every American's lifestyle. I don't care about a silly drop of Retsyn when the food supply and environment is so badly corrupted that everybody's obese and dying from diabetes and heart disease. I also miss those classic non-Wrigley brands like Beeman, Black Jack, Teaberry, Clove, etc. that every store carried. I guess drugs have replaced gum and pocket breath candies. The government ruins everything, pretty much--even our own country.
Those are some classic brands!!
60 years of the junk food industry honing their craft is what's caused the USA to be 69% obese...not the government banning questionable ingredients.
You guess people have switched candies for drugs?!? Are you doing a parody of an old person pretending that people didn't get up to all sorts in the 50s, 60s,70s and 80s.
Since when does the government ban something for causing fertility problems? If anything, I would expect them to offer it to school children behind parents' backs.
😂😂
9:10 - It didn't just fade away... it shrank our testes.
😂😂😂
No, soy did that.
I acknowledge your existence. @@user-iv5gy3rc2b
Great video! Miss the certs!
Thank you so much!
Now that you mention it… Never knew Certs left. They didn’t always advertise, they were just there. So unless you were looking you never knew they vanished. Kinda like realizing your guy at the deli is gone a month after he left. You go hmmm, where’d (Insert Name Here) go? Haven’t seen him in a while.
Yeah, I also think that mints have gotten much stronger since the 1970s. I remember the first time I tried a Mentos and an Altoids I was shocked at the strength. I think Certs was probably too weak.
I stocked up on fruit stripe gum.
Me too!
Nothing beats a great pair of Leggs. Sadly in our sloppy society ladies no longer wear pretty stockings. Just sweatpants and flip flops.
Yeah, I think hosiery is out of style.
At least we still have yoga pants.
Momma ate Certs all the time. I guess that's why I got 13 fingers.
😂😂
My dad always carried Binaca spray whereas my grandma carried Certs
Yeah. That sounds right!
I'm sure the artificial sweeteners we use commonly now are safe and not toxic...
🤣🤣🤣
Dick Clark sold a whole mess of Certs on "rate a record".
Oh yeah! I just looked that up. I didn’t recall that, but he certainly did!!
Our overlords are pretty good, it wasn't much more than 24 hours after I had a random conversation with someone about Certs and this gets put in my algorithm. I mean how often do you talk about Certs? And how often do you see a video about Certs? This may be the only Certs video in existence.
Exactly as I planned it! 😂😂
Seriously, that’s crazy how that happens.
Well done.
Thank you for watching!!
I didn't realize they aren't around anymore 😂
Yeah, somehow the internet didn’t notice!
Oh that’s what GI Joe was referencing!
Yep!
Maybe because people don’t smoke as much anymore breath mints lost popularity?
I mean, that has to be at least partially true!
People have been chewing chicle likely for thousands of years, he didn't invent it.
He invented chewing gum, which had chicle as one ingredient.
Yeah, that's true. I guess you could say that he was one of the first to market and sell it on a large scale.
He added sugar and flavorings to it and branded it.
Dammit, you reminded me of something *beautiful!*
Good ol days
So Certz were shrinking our 🥜s? 😲
Apparently! Lucky it was just a drop!
I honestly didn't know they were discontinued.
Yeah, so surprising. Such a well-known brand.

Well dang neverr knew Certs was off shelves.
And what it was to hard to just not have that one ingrediant in the Certs?
That is lame.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone pronounce it chick-lay.
Should be chick-lee? I have a habit of pronouncing things weird. 🤣🤣
@@PointlessNostalgia The "let" part is pronounced as in "let him in". :)
There’s no T! American Chicle Company.
@@PointlessNostalgia Oh, I thought you were referring to the gum itself, Chiclets! My bad. The correct pronunciation of "chicle" would be "cheek-leh". There's no "y" sound at the end, as it's a Spanish word and Spanish doesn't use diphthongs. Each vowel is only one sound. :)
Well, now I’m pronouncing Chicklets ChicLay forever because of this conversation! 🤣
