How can anyone call Shelley ugly😮When she is being interviewed wearing the red shirt her face is glowing she is stunning

Shelley deserved at least an Oscar nomination for her performance, she's really the backbone of the movie. God I love this movie!

To be honest Shelly deserves an Oscar for her performance. Incredible lady.
I totally agree !
Instead all she got was a raspberry nomination.
She wasn't acting. She was in actual hysterics because of Kubrick's enforced method-acting.
Please! Shelley was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for this film. When he made the terrified face they were a terrible and notorious over-acting.
@@Emper0rH0rde Yeah, keep thinking that.
Scatman seems just as humble as in the film, great guy
He pretty much played himself in all his films. He was just a likeable old gentleman.
It honestly warmed my heart watching him talk about the other actors. A beautiful man.
Him and Danny's scene was 1 of my favorite parts
He must have really enjoyed working on that set. He's moved to tears
@@ccrdcd38 I'm shocked Danny didn't have a career in acting he was brilliant in this film. His parents must have decided the experience wasn't healthy for him because he easily could have made millions in Hollywood.
Wow, that Scatman Crothers was the real thing. The way he came across in the movie was based on real feelings. Im really happy for him too. He seemed to be grateful for this.
I got tears also listening to him
Mr Cruthers will live for centuries on film in this memorable (and heroic) Stanley Kubrick movie role.
He's fantastic.
hes very majical to me

The boy who played Danny is absolutely priceless, poor Shelly is shattered, Kubrick is a mad perfectionist, Jack is on just the right amount of cocaine, and Scatman broke my heart...

I’ve watched this so many times and just now noticed that Jack was helping put blankets on Shelly and stuck around leaning down to talk to her and make sure she was okay. He is so damn sweet.
he even said she was one of the best actresses he ever worked with, even if many didn't agree with him at the time. i'm glad he was able to recognise her talent
He actually strangled her so badly she’s permanently blind in her left eye to this day.
You have to tear down to build up.
Shelley Duvall can be very proud of her performance in this movie. It's just as good as Nicholson's---and Nicholson's performance WOULDN'T WORK without Shelley Duvall
I agree!
It's the truth
Obviously
Agreed, anyone else would seem out of place. Her features lend themselves to the uncomfortable terror of the whole story.
Umm... no, it's not even close to as good as Jack Nicholson's performance. What a ridiculous thing to say. Jack's performance in this is legendary. You could have put any female actress in place of Shelley, and the movie would have been just as great. As you probably know, Shelley got the Razzie for worst actress because of her performance in this film, and it was well deserved.
Jack reeks charisma. There's no one like him. What a talent. What a legend.
He's a predator.
@@YIKESMF and achieved more in life than you ever will?
@@YIKESMFwtf are you talking about
He wasn't the best choice for the screenplay imo. The book shows Jack as a intellectually grounded man, a competent teacher and thinker in general. The process of his insanity is a very slow process he constantly keeps questioning internally until the hotel wears him down in the final acts. Nicholson looks crazy from the first scene and like King said..there is no arc to the character, we don't really feel sympathy for him like we do in the book.
@@Bradgilliswhammyman I like this movie and him in it, but I agree with you. I saw the Shining in a theater when it came out and this is arguably the pinnacle of Nicholson's career. He had already showed everyone how to swig Jim Beam and instructed the waitress on how to hold chicken salad. He had already been Buddusky, J.J. Gittes, and most especially he had already been Randall P. McMurphy. And maybe R.P. McMurphy was the actual pinnacle of his career. Either way, he was extremely popular and well-loved. Still is, but this is now, and back then he was so big his reputation dwarfed the character.
Jack brushes his Teeth
"They will be so grateful now...He has a fresh sparkling breath......"

I honestly think he was just giving a performance for her lol. He could have said he had to take a piss before brushing his teeth and close the door for the entire thing 🤣
MrStonecold69 Lol that's a good one!! But back then so many people smoked and they didn't think it smelled as bad as we do nowadays.
Remember that smoking in the seventies AFTER brushing the teeth was no biggie. People smoked everywhere and in every situation. I myself is now 56 yoa. And I remember my mon smoking like a chimney in almost all concievable places.
Yeah, I was thinking: _There goes his breath...._
😊😊😊😊
What strikes me is Jack Nicholson's professionalism in playing this demanding role -- how he can turn it on or off in the blink of an eye. So many actors would feel the need to stay in character for the whole shoot. Jack proves that you give an iconic performance and still be yourself between takes.
I love the moment at 4:30, the way he looks at Shelly's knife for a couple of seconds, it's like he's using that visual to help him channel the character.
Poor Heath Ledger... 😿

Shelly Duvall is made to look like a whiner, but she has the most demanding role in the film
Some of those scenes took over 140 takes. Working for Stanley must be brutal for anyone.
She did miss her cue at the front door.
Kubrick was probably a very difficult man to work with on set, but he had a sort of notoriety for that, demanding perfection from his actors. Going into a Kubrick film, you had to know ahead of time what you were getting yourself into, and you had to be prepared for it.
@@crawlingamongthestars3736 Kubrick didn't make demands for anything but time and stamina. He _looked for_ interesting performances.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver I agree, that was essentially the point I was making. The reason in large part that The Shining and other Kubrick films are masterpieces is in fact the very painstaking approach he took in creating them. Greatness in any endeavor generally involves at least a decent amount of suffering. Some people can handle this, others not so much. That being said, I do believe in the end Shelley Duvall's performance in The Shining is excellent and integral to why the film is so incredibly effective and interesting. Unfortunately it also seemed to have a significant unsettling effect on her, but again, that's the nature of the beast. Very hard work is very hard work.
Danny Lloyd was PERFECT casting for their son. He is one of the cutest kids I have ever seen and such a great actor!
Awh, bless Scatman Crothers - he seemed like such a loving, wonderful man. I mean he seemed charming in the film - but that was just his character, but in the interviews he's an angel ❤

Shelly Duval's performance in The Shining was VERY VERY nuanced and well done. I think the stress of the shoot (and the way she was treated by Kubrick) is what undid her and negatively affected her mental health. The Shining is a GREAT film, a cult classic, and Nicholson and Duvall gave INCREDIBLE performances.
ALL of the cast gave INCREDIBLE performances. It was just INCREDIBLE how "hermetic" the world of the Overlook came off on film.
I never knew those 4 colour BIC pens were so old. Wow what a classic design, they haven't changed at all.
Yeah, but they still write like crap.
They were on the market years before the film came out.
Danny’s acting was incredible in this movie. I can’t get over how perfect his performance was for a child.
He really portrayed perfect innocent child with abuse trauma.. And i find it very interesting stephen king son (JOE) was happen to be exactly six just like the age of the character danny in the movie when the film was made.. And they say there is a multiple rumour of stephen to be pedo

God bless Scatman Crothers. Good Lord, you could see he felt truly blessed to be part of it.
He was fantastic in the film, too. The face he makes when Danny is trying to Shine to him at him. And the conversation between Danny and him over the ice cream is one of the focal scenes in the film.
I’ve probably watched The Shining more than any other film. It’s fascinating on many levels.
To think every indoor scene was filmed at Elstree in England and every single thing was built from scratch.
300 construction engineers, builders, decorators and electricians etc. Everything just looks so convincing. It’s a bit of an obsession for me.
It was a bit of an obsession for Kubrick too. 😉
I recommend rob agers youtube videos on Kubrick, a lot of revealed easter eggs
Kubrick hated to travel, so if there was a way to film in London, where he lived, he did it. The entire Battle of Hue City sequence from Full Metal Jacket was filmed in an abandoned gas works in London, and he flew in hundreds of palm trees.
@@markzerkle1899
Yeah I know. Although he didn’t live in London he lived in Hertfordshire.
There is another documentary done in 1980 by the Japanese guy who talks to Kubrick on the phone and asks him about the ends of 2001 and of The Shining. But there is a longer version where Vivian takes the guy around and shows him where they filmed the movie and they talk about this documentary. She got to film for a long time, and she had a special set up with a camera and sound so she could work alone and get up close and intimate with the cast.
One quick moment in Vivian Kubrick‘s documentary is when you see Stanley Kubrick, Shelley Duvall, and Jack Nicholson greeting what seems to be just “ordinary citizens“ who have visited the set. However, you can see they are treating them with extreme respect. The reason being if you look carefully, the first person in the group is James Mason (in costume), who was at the same studio, filming a Sherlock Holmes thriller, “Murder by Decree” playing Dr. Watson to Christopher Plummer’s Sherlock Holmes. The studio that they were both filming in, Elstree Studios , Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England,
was Kubrick’s favorite since it was virtually walking distance from his home. Of course, Kubrick directed Mason in his classic masterpiece “Lolita “. And ever since that film, both men remain the closest of friends and visited each other quite frequently. In fact, when Kubrick discovered that James Mason was shooting at the same studio, he’s the one who instigated the invite for him, and his guests, and supposedly made a great fuss over his appearance and gave them a personal tour.
James mason as perfect one to play as child abuser its very convenient for kubrick to let jack meet with him as well.. I come to notice later the bathroom opening in lolita and jack opening is exactly the same shot
This is absolutely fascinating! Jack is so charismatic. Danny is precocious. Scatman is so sweet and kindhearted, and Shelley is adorable!
Glad to see, after initial bashing, that Duvall's performance over time has become much more appreciated.

Paths of Glory, Lolita, Spartacus, Doctor Stranglove, 2001 Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut... Stanley Kubrick was a Force of Nature. When I watched The Shining as a child, there was an introduction to existential concepts: an unease in the background of the mind, empty liminal spaces & haunting environment and the uncanny creature in the form of a man. Kubrick truly knew and understood how the human psyche works and how to exploit it, expanding the viewer's perception through the black rectangular mirror, that Monolith, Film.
Wow. It's easy to see why Kubrick is analyzed and studied. In the ballroom scene, he tells the extras not to nod their heads when they're engaged in fake conversation (no talking out loud). That activity would have pulled the viewer's eyes away from Jack. A small thing but genius. I know that Steven King didn't like this film and I'm a Steven King fan. But I also appreciate Kubrick's work here.
Also practicalities I think too. As there was also a soundtrack of old-time music being played as Jack walks through, they wouldn't want distractions from the extras, and then up to when he bumps into Philip Stone' character and also too much nodding would be a giveaway of fakeness.
Stephan King is good at books, not movies. Movies are Kubrick's territory.
Probably obvious for any director.
@@theinnerlight8016 Well said.

I think people underestimate and, subsequently, undermine Duvall’s acting abilities by always attributing her terrified performance in this to Stanley’s demanding tactics. Don’t get me wrong, I think it bumped it up a notch, but that happened with so many other actors he’s worked with. I think people like to blame Stanley for Shelly’s mental state as of today, but what she’s going through now reminds me of my brother and he had a very nurturing upbringing and generally pretty good encounters with people. I’m not saying Stanley was simply swell and that he didn’t go a little overboard (especially on number of takes), but Shelly strikes me (in her younger years) as more capable than people give her credit for.
Plus she did confront Kubrick and talked back to him
@@Reprodestruxionexactly.
Jack Nicholson is so much still in character in this clip ! Chilling !
14:15 "Hunks of hair? ... okay...." LMAO
I think Shelly’s nature in real life is shy, friendly and easy going. It’s not her fault she wasn’t the strong, tough Wendy that she was on the book. No matter how gud an actress you are how far can you go if that character is so different to u? I think Shelly’s role was needed in this film. She is so stunningly pretty that films with her in it are always gonna attract a big audience.
For me, the movie Wendy is way better than the book Wendy (for those who disagree with me, pls don't come after me). Her vulnerability and fragile personality is making me feel worried and sad for her. Her character is the best possible depiction of a wife being abused by her psycho-turning husband. Wendy's weak character is the best complement to a deranged and aggresive Jack. If Wendy was a strong and independent woman in the movie, then Jack would look like an absolute fool to her. Kubrick wouldn't chose Shelly if he already knew she isn't fit for that role at the first place. Nicholson and Duvall really did a phenomenal work! The Shining became my favorite horror movie because of them two.
@@pjjustice5014 PJ Justice, you've got a BIG surprise coming to you.
Wendy is not strong in the book. Just a boring character with a cliche backstory (mommy issues).
Plus it makes up for Shelley’s Wendy to overcome her crippling fear , feelings of inadequacy , complicit silence and shyness to confront Jack (and Kubrick)
She IS beautiful in 1980. But Dr. Kubrick made her look ugly in the movie.
The way she said bye when she shut the door was so cute 🤣
Wow Crothers was a beautiful person..I remember his voice as a kid in the cartoon Hong Kong fuey, but to see him moved to tears when asked about the cast he was working with was beautiful in every way man 💙☮️
The little boy is lovely! This is one brilliant film❤️
Holy shit, kid was adorable! He's actually talked about making the shining as an adult, too, you can find it on CZcams.
This is so odd. I've watched this "Behind The Scenes" more than any, yet it still doesn't feel like its really behind anything. It's as if its a PART of the film itself. Forever attached. Almost methodical in how it presents itself. I don't think it was on accident that a very private filmmaker allowed all this without only showing what he WANTED us to see, even though Vivian filmed it. Im sure SK edited it down.
Agreed.
He did. SK's biography by John Baxter details how Kubrick had Vivian cut out as much of himself as possible and made her lose candid footage of actors taking drugs.
Stanley's fingerprints are all over this thing.
Even the way he enters the film after walk down the hall and he's just hanging at the end with Leon Vitali its like the entrance he had planned haha
What is he gonna do say no to his own daughter!? He loved her. She was the one he trained to take over for him one day. I read scientology got in the way. I am open to all religions but it saddens me that Scientology breaks up families! They were estranged at the time he died. Watch out for cults!
That moment that Jack's being introduced to "all the gang" is such a great human study.
Especially the little girl that shakes his hand as the woman says "they're so excited" and the girl pulls a face that says "are we?" before she notices the camera lol.
Shelley Duvall’s performance seems more brilliant as time passes. Fantastic to see James Mason on the set in his Watson suit. I read the novel when I was 13 and watched the film at 15. I was absolutely terrified. I think that by 16, I was no longer afraid because I had become desensitised.
That was as eerie and surreal as the actual movie.
I don’t know what was crazier…Shelly being abused and Jack being catered to, Scatman having a come to Jesus moment, Jack being Jack, the kids interview or Stanley’s face.
How was she abused exactly ?
@@Ooth9999women want equality without the downsides.

Stanley pushed her so hard. I saw the film when it first aired and It Was Fantastic. Miss Duvall suffered for many years after this. But she held on and that was some of the Best acting ever. I'm glad it was her that played that part. There was nobody else at that time who could have done better. And Kubrick knew this. Thank you miss Duvall and the rest of the crew and cast. Mr Kubrick you are a masterpiece.
I love this documentary. I find myself watching it every few years when it pops up on my feed. Such a great glimpse into the making of a great movie.
It's disappointing that nobody else in the cast or crew stuck up for Shelley Duvall. She was being abused, supposedly to make the movie "better." These are actors, this is a fictional movie. You need to either trust the actor's ability to provide the level of fear and terror an abused person would experience in that scenario to your satisfaction, or re-cast the part. We don't condone actually killing people in movies for "realism," abuse shouldn't have been condoned either.
Jack has the exact same personality as his character, is he even acting? 😁
Not too sophisticated, are you.
Jack gave a tip to fellow actor and one of his best friends Harry Dean Stanton: to act just like he is normally off camera. To be as natural as can be.
One of the reasons king hated the film was because Jack came across as "crazy" from the beginning...and Kings intention was to show the character slowly going mad.
Jack seems pretty chill behind the scenes here to me.
I worked on the walt disney film Return to Oz in 1984 shot at Elstree studios, on a walk on what they called the back lot i came across the Sno cat they had used on The Shining. I didn't know at the time that thats what it was, it just looked in a bit of a sorry state. I made a few enquiries as to who's it was & was told i need to speak with Stanley Kubrick who had an office at Elstree. I was told he had been asked if he would like to sell it many times & always said it wasn't for sale. I phoned his office & spoke with his assistant who spoke with Stanley, when she came back she said Stanley said i could take it as long as i didn't leave a mess!! ...Happy days!!
Shelly deserved more from her impeccable performance
It's so cool to see the making of this movie you can tell the making of this movie was stressful for everyone and I kinda feel bad for Shelley I was not even thought of when this movie was made
I know the two extras in the ballroom scene was hating being put back in the back table they're thinking wow no FaceTime here 😂
Jeezz. I could watch 5 hrs of behind the scenes of The Shining and still want more.
Stanley Kubrick creating the iconic shot where the camera is under Jack Nicholson at the door: YEA THAT SHIT DO BE LOOKIN KINDA COOL
I love Shelly Duvall. She was a big part of my childhood because of Faerie Tale Theatre. Having said that, I can kind of see why Kubrick would be frustrated while working with her. Saying clumps of hair were being pulled out during the bathroom scene and then handing him a few strands. Having to be swaddled like a baby on the floor. Complaining about being jealous of Nicholson. I mean, we hear about how he made her do take after take, but look at the outcome - the greatest horror movie in history (in my opinion, at least). Even Duvall admitted that.
That toothbrushing technique was manic. True method acting.
I'm very happy for Danny Lloyd and Shelley Duvall. Mr. Lloyd is a biology professor and Duvall is doing another film after all these years. Just goes to show how far these people have come.
Shelly should of got an Oscar
4:31 Nicholson getting into character! This is hilarious!
“What if you walked in here and I was talking… cocaine” 😂
By all accounts THIS is what Jack is like making every movie.
Super nice and funny, never heard any bad stories about him on a set.
Jack is the man!! Handsome, charming and witty af. Some stuff he did on camera, like unzipping his jeans in front of Vivian Kubrick would cause outrage today. IDGAF, Jack is King!
Shelley deserved better ❤️ still love her endlessly
imo, Shelly was incredible given the amount of pressure she had, to be able to continue doing a film whilst in utter hysterics is beyond what any human could possibly do. I'm really fuckin' proud of her for what she did. Although at times it did seem a little off and unnatural, I REALLY enjoyed Shelly and Nicholsons acting throughout the film. Even though King said he hates it, and I agree to the extent that it never really showed how powerful women can be, it is still an amazing film.
I love how Shelly is having a panic attack and jack is just mechanically laughing 😂
I’m sure he wasn’t laughing at her though, probably just staying in character. Jack seems like a caring person
Shelly was so beautiful. Not enough credit to her from the crew. And wow...so stunning. What a babe.

Shelley Duvall, what a superb actor!
This film itself is deserving of an award for short documentaries. Thank you, Viv.
you watch the movie and how great the performances were and its easy to understand why Shelly Duvall and Jack Nicholson resent how Stanley Kubrick pretty much gets all of the praise for how great the movie is
This is insanely interesting. If it wasn't for Vivian, we'd never know.
lmfao the random shit vivian recorded made this feel like a skate video
Shelley definitely has a certain charm to her. Unique looking, comes across as very quirky and sweet
I’m so glad Vivian did this for us and Jack Nicholson is so handsome I’d wet my pants if he said to me, “want to come in with me” when he was going to take a shower.
Shelly's very smart. She knew completely why he was being mean to her on set lol

@@Tiznado Well, 'smart' retrospectively so, in this case. Way to take away a compliment dude. You just want to hurt others.

Really love Shelley Duvall - I would honestly hate to be in her position during this move despite all the money she made. @@Michael-jw6et let's see you act in a movie
@@Michael-jw6et yeah and Kubrick was nominated for worst director. Do you think he was the worst director. Btw this movie bombed at the box office and critically lambasted. It wasn't til years later anyone truly realised what this movie was and became a cult classic. Everyone involved with this film , including Kubrick praised Duvall for her work. Especially with what she put up with. Which today would be abuse and gotten Kubrick fired. So before you offer you expertise maybe you outta think things through a bit
@@Capt_OscarMike LOL self-important much?
Jack Nicholson seems like a cool actor to work with.
I love how Jack gets in to character on his way to film.
Shelley was soo beautiful. What an intense performance.
The guy who plays dick halloran is such a sweetheart how grateful he is falls in line with character perfectly
3:08 Jack sings "Louise" by Chevalier, if you listen carefully.
