Ive been unofficially coached by some of the real mechanics at the shop as well and they taught me a few easy tips on how to do some complicated repairs more easily, dont be afraid to ask questions if you want to know more (of course dont annoy them either!) I work at discount tire and I can offer some insight. I get paid $11 an hour and that’s starting pay. We bet two bonus checks a year that are about 300-500 dollars. It can be insanely difficult on busy days as you get no breaks in open weather with constant labor. You do learn a lot about tires and get to work on lots of cars. I’ve worked on some super cars, sports cars and plenty of commuters and trucks. It’s not a bad job to have if you have the time or energy to maintain your life/body. If you want a work out, work on cars and get paid to do those things, then you can apply at a 6-10 hour garage gym membership at your local tire store.

    PLEASE READ!!! I'm surprised that lot tech is not on this list. I am a lot tech for a luxury car brand dealership. I earn $12 an hour and $18 overtime which is any hours over 40. My job is to manage the lots and showroom (pulling cars in and out), managing the lots new and used(keeping them orderly and straight and grouped together by car company or model. I also do chase cars for dropping a car off for a client, deliveries, drive cars to and from reconditioning centers, drive really expensive cars to events and in to stadiums etc.. I think it is the best job for a car enthusiast because of the number of different cars I drive all the time. I literally get paid to drive cars, and there's also little paperwork and keeping up with keys. Best job I've had yet and happy to have it but can also be a little stressful

    Also, maybe do a video talking about difference between cheap parts Vs. well made affordable parts. Because I feel there are a lot of people in the car world that misuse the word cheap when it comes to less expensive parts. like Kw vs BC racing. some say bc 's are cheap compared to Kw's. But less expensive doesn't mean cheap. Cheap usually refers to quality of a product.

After working there you will get to see many cars, learn how to do almost all preventative maintenance on vehicles, learn how to change your oil, about all the fluids that go into vehicles, about air filters and oil filters, how to check the level of all the fluids, how the ac system works, how the coolant system works, how fuel system works, how a transmission works, you will learn about tires, differentials, transfer cases, how to do tire rotations, coolant flush’s, transmission flushes, differential fluid changes, transfer case fluid change, oil changes, fuel system cleaners (not just the tank but the valves and the injectors). Also it is a nice place to work as people are pretty respectful they don’t treat you like a McDonald’s worker but rather a professional.

I was / am happy doing it and also there are opportunities to move up almost just like in any business.

    As much as I love working on my own project cars, personally taking your hobby (automotive) and turning into a job was not as fun as I originally thought. I didn’t get the satisfaction as I got with my own car, so I didn’t enjoy the job very well. The auto shop and the people you work with will change the outcome of enjoyment of the job though. And if you get a bad vibe from a shop (people working there act..) trust your gut and walk away, I made that mistake and it was a long 3 weeks waiting for the clock to hit 5pm. But if you do find a good shop with hood people you will enjoy working more in the shop environment.

    • @lsswappedcessna
      @lsswappedcessna Před 6 lety

      The only bad thing is modern cars. They all have the oil filter in a really inconvenient place in my experience, and while the plug isn't impossible to get to, it's a hassle where a LOT of cars in my family are 4WD and thus have a skid plate. My car is simple, everything mounted in an easy to get to place. Hell, even the fuel pump is a couple of bolts, 'rearrangement' of some superficial parts, and pull it straight off the side of the timing case. No dropping the gas tank or any of that shit. Oil filter is even easier. Drain oil, unscrew filter, coat new filter gasket, screw new filter in, fill engine with oil, run for a few seconds to cycle the oil, shut off, top it off to the full mark on the stick. Usually 5 quarts of oil (1.5 US Gallons), so nothing that special.

    CAR DETAILER is absolutely the one I want to go for. Cleaning cars is the most fun thing in my life and that's definitely going to be my job. The best way to start out is at a dealership in the auto recon center. It gets you detailing vehicles full-time and kind of shows you what it's like to work in auto detailing a lot, after doing that for a while and maybe saving up money and getting used to the labor, then you can look into either doing a mobile detailing business of your own or a stationary one. Detailing is a very successful business because there are a lot of lazy people in this world especially in America with the new generation people, so auto detailers actually end up being pretty successful, currently one 20 something year old kid it's currently making a 100,000+ a year! Depends of the major such as engineering or even technical schools. My suggestions are you will work with major car companies for designing models, photography (which is more easier to the mind) or being a car journalist reviewing current showroom cars.

    The job that will actually teach you the most about cars is being a parts person. Yes, you will have to know basics about cars, but if you're an enthusiast, this should be cake. It is an easy start at retail places like PepBoys or AutoZone where there are retail job responsibilities as well, and the full weight of being a parts person doesn't entirely fall on you.

    #8 be a mechinic in the army. this is more for the Truck guys, but you'll see lots of cool trucks and such pass by. You also make a pretty decent wage. I am one in belgium, and i make the average wage of my country at 19, we get a year of training and then we start working at a base.
