    Big GE fan from India here. I must admit, I'd heard only one song before. It wasn't Radar Love, it was Ce Soir (because Iron Maiden covered it!).
    I heard they were coming to Pinkpop '19, which I was doing as part of a Europe tour, and decided to check them out fully and was blown away by the quality and variety of songs. The sublime guitar playing of George Kooymans was a particular delight. This song and the instrumental section is one of my favourite musical sections of all time now. I wish more people knew about them, I'd call them the most underrated band of all time given all that they've done.
    Thank you, Holland, for the rock music world's best-kept secret, I just wish you buggers weren't so humble about it.
    PS: India connect for trivia wonks - Barry Hay was born in India.

    Moontan and To The Hilt showcased so well just how amazing this entire band was at creating complex compositions without succumbing to the complexity addiction that plagued many progressive rock bands. They made such unique decisions about how to compose their music, but never went too far. This, Vanilla Queen, and Violins from To The Hilt are probably my favorite of their proggy stuff.

      IndoMilo ......yes, you’re right of course, I hadn’t meant to sound condescending in any way. I certainly missed plenty myself as I’m still discovering thanks to CZcams alone. I suppose I’d hoped folks (at least, those my age) would have known “Radar Love” and explored the band further? In my youth, I always did this if I thought a particular artist/band sounded “interesting” and seriously, this band has a great many excellent songs, albums for that matter. While undoubtedly a terrific number, the fact that “Radar Love” received excessive airplay here spoiled a good thing imo and to my ears, it now comes off as a relatively “weak” track. I love a ton of different music but Golden Earring has *always* been up with my favourites. I especially love lyrics and considering English isn’t even these guys’ “native tongue”, their lyrics are all the more impressive and really quite remarkable. “Moontan” is my favourite GE album but I still have several of their original vinyls and think “To The Hilt” is another gem, a very different sounding but excellent album. There’s a terrific video of the guys performing “The Vanilla Queen” live and George’s outro solo is a real pleasure (and exciting how much he’s “into” it) to watch. I’ll see if I still have it and edit it in should you be interested. Here you go, George’s solo begins at 8.28...czcams.com/video/G-Jco-RMgDw/video.html

    • @lindadote
      @lindadote Před 4 lety

      IndoMilo ......thanks, I wasn’t remotely familiar with The Beta Band and enjoyed the song. I missed an awful lot of new acts around the early to mid ‘90’s due to serious health issues. I like the band’s sound and suspect “Dry The Rain” might well grow on me. The slide-guitar at the beginning is sweet! If I’m honest, the only groups to really catch my attention around that time (perhaps a bit earlier) were REM and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I love so much earlier music but I’m not at all up on things now. Lyrics are important to me too and it just seems 50+ years ago, lyrics were more profound. I realise that’s a “generalisation” but it always seemed that way to me for the most part. I’m always interested in learning of new or unknown acts so thanks again. Did you check George’s solo? It makes me feel young again! 🤣

    Apart from the well-known hit Radar Love, mainly tracks such as Vanilla Queen, Candy's Going Bad, Are You Receiving Me, and Just Like Vince Taylor indicate Golden Earring's power in the early 1970s. And the fact that the songs were long for the time and the intended purpose speaks of either daring. The powerful voice of Kooymans, vocally supplemented by Hay (and also by Patricia Paay), somewhat angular riffs, and unique percussion make Moontan a piece of Dutch glory that cannot be denied. Not to mention the bass work (listen carefully to Are You Receiving Me).
