I am going to be doing a catch and cook by spearing a fish. However, I do not own a spear gun, nor do I really want to buy one since I am primarily a catch and release fisherman. So, instead of buying one I decided to make a budget hawaiian sling spear. They are very basic and pretty effective for close quarter spearing. Since it was made out of PVC, it was an easy and cheap build. I include the basic build and piece information in case you feel the need to build one also.

Wow! this really is a brilliant idea...and for $20...verrrrry sweeeeet!
On the grip end of the spear, you could use the edge of a file making some random grooves across the shaft. The coverage would only need to extend +-1-1/2 inches up the shaft. This would give a better grip with thumb & finger. You could use some plastic beads inside the surgical tubing which would eliminate the knots.

Great vid I made one but instead of using an aluminium spear I modified a fiberglass rod and put a screw on one end and used premade spear tips, works great Thanks alot!
Good deal. I see that they are using carbon fibre as well so I guess the lighter the better. I'll be testing it soon. I do have access to some fiberglass rod so I can do that as well.

dude just use a toggle bolt without the spring. barb solved. need to protect the band from the shaft at the "trigger",and shifting the foregrip back will lengthen your draw some. aside from that, and the sick cat joke, (ironic coming from a "catch and release"guy) build isn't bad and may be viable with some adjustments.

You have to get a hold of a die and tap set to thread the end, if your going to put a 3 or 5 prong on there. I guess you could also get some stainless steel, sharpen it, then epoxy it on. Great cheap sling man. I go to Belize quite often and would love to make one while I’m down there.

Dumb question but I thought spear guns had some kind of lines attached to the spear?
Good design but I think you made the gun too long limiting how far you can draw back. I would have dropped the middle straight part at least.

Good deal. Pretty basic design but works fine. Instead of knots I was going to put a sinker in the tubing and use that as the stopper for the bands. I'll have to see if there is any issue long term with the sharper edges of the pvc.

Awesome design....I have and have seen many designs, but this is very inexpensive, and when the band dry rots, should be real easy to replace! I agree the 3 spoke paralyzer tip should be awesome (maybe a tiny s.s. hose clamp + 3 bent 4" bike spokes?)
Yea, I was thinking the spokes would work good. Better penetration with less power. I think I will end up going that route.

Would a steel shaft not work? It might rust but the extra mass couldn't hurt for range? The only local aluminium pole I can find is 1/2 inch. And if I use steel I could take an angle grinder to cut a slit and then bend it up and make prongs and sharpen them.

Put some resin epoxy into the knock so when you release it, the metal doesn't puncture the tubing. You could move the 'T' where you've connected the bands to, up further to your hand rail or in front of, giving you a longer draw and increasing the energy stored in the bands.
I think I will just kill them the way it is. Might as well just get a real gun then.

Steve, I made one very similar to this a few years ago using PVC as well. The difference was I had my cross piece for the rubber attachment close to the front of the "gun" instead of the rear ... it gave me a longer, stronger power stroke. I also used for my shaft, the 4' fiberglass sign markers at home Depot. I simply made some stainless steel tips epoxied to the front using sleeves ... made for a lighter, faster spear.

I like your design. I would make the body shorter. Cut the length between the handle connection and the cross member connecting the band. You will be able to have a longer pull with a shorter body.
I made mine with less parts but to shoot arrows.

Hey now. It matches my pink bridge backpack. I'm cheap and the cheapest versions of stuff is in pink color. $20 price difference on the used Iphone. Plus, I am manly enough that it doesn't bother me.

You need a steel shaft aluminum is too weak, or a fiber glass one from a driveway reflector.

You could try to add a string to the shaft so you don't loose it... or a big fish swims away with it... ( that would make a funny fail fishing vid, though) Like that you could retrieve your catch without having to go after it.
I probably won't in the beginning, but after my shaft swims away, I definitely will on the second one. That is kind of how I roll. One inch thick skull. LOL.

The sling should be closer to the hand grip, this way you don't have to pull back so far...
I was thinking that cutout on cudjoe with the downed ships may be a good spot to shoot some fish for a kayaker. ships in deep water can hold interesting things... even if they aren't biting. Also, maybe channel key, unless the current rips...? I currently live in gainesville but have family in key west. its funny a lot of the places i recognize on your videos, are places were my cousin and i hang out. My grandpa has taken us out to almost every island from "jurassic island" to snipe point out on the gulf side to spearfish. Cousin and I are old enough to get out ourselves now but we only have kayaks as means of getting around, so your videos on these really inshore spots are really awesome for us. know this channel will only get better, thanks for the awesome work.
Thanks manmarvel. Fish are smart versus fisherman, but they can't hide so easy from divers. You will be surprised at the big ones that are all over the place. Any little pocket can hold some bruisers. Those outlying Keys are great spots as they don't get a lot of pressure from people.

I have read some discussions about this specific to the Keys and the consensus was "I have no clue" as there is so many variables and there is no base reasons. Even the old timers couldn't really predict it. I do know though that if the wind is blowing 20's for a week in a row, the flats are going to be muddy. LOL. I just never really got into the spear fishing that much because I just don't want to take that much fish home. Too much work to clean and then all your friends start expecting cleaned filets. LOL.

Hey Steve, what pound and length leader do you use on knocker rigs for mangrove snapper?
Depends if i am fishing around cover. 20lb for normal. 30 lb for bridges or structure. Usually 4-5 feet of leader so there is more protection from abrasion. Braid will pop if it touches anything.

Since aluminum is a soft-ish metal you could heat the end and form it into an actual arrowhead if you wanted.
