Crazy you mentioned Angel's Evny Rye. This was one of the first bottles I went through FAST! I got through 3 bottles and then got tired of it. It got way too maple syrup for me, but it's on my shelf.

I agree with your assessment. To me, it's a very inoffensive whiskey as long as you like an oaky whiskey. The finish doesn't last long. It's a little watery if you're used to high proof stuff, and I find it's pretty flat overall. It's very smooth and well rounded but I don't get the notes that I prefer in a whiskey like hot cinnamon candy and brown sugar. There's definitely a cherry and maple syrup quality to it though but I've found some ryes that do those flavors better.

    • @whiskeyisajourney

@@whiskeyisajourney I find Michter's rye has a maple sugar/syrup quality to it. Much sweeter than the Old Forester rye in my opinion but I think it's because it has more corn. Haven't found a barrel strength or 10 year bottle other than at my local bourbon bar though. Their us-1 rye is great but low proof as well. Hoping for the day I walk into the liquor store to find the barrel strength.

Ah, another experience with Woodford Double Oaked that is consistent with mine. First year into whiskey (and drinking, actually) and kept seeing it as a top recommendation for the first bottle of bourbon. Smells great, but it didn't translate to the taste, which felt like predominant oak and a bit of spice. A boring old bottle of Buffalo Trace was much more of my jam.

When Im in the mood for a double oaked its either this or the Old Forester 1910, Im partial to the WRDO (over a 2" ice cube) but then again, the OF1910 is $8 cheaper and a higher proof for when Im making an old fashioned, so I drink the 1910 a little more often because I drink a lot of old fashions. 🥃Cheers!

A store pick is different than the "standard" distillery release of the bottling. Typically, but not always a group of people will sample different barrels from the distillery and they might choose a barrel that is on profile of that whiskey or they might choose something that is a little different. It depends on who selects the samples. More goes into it, but that's the basics of it to my knowledge.

I apologize to assume that you would know. Basically, A store pic would be a "special" pick from selected samples from certain barrels from the distillery. The distillery would bottle that special pick and get it to the store with a label on the bottle stating something like "personally selected" or "bottled for" or "custom batched for". These picks are known to be better (but not always) than the standard offerings.

A store pick is a bottle/barrel that was selected by the distillery or the store selected samples supplied by the distillery for "special selection". Sometimes the pick is a little better than the regular release with a slightly different profile then the regular release.
As far as a recommendation for a sweet caramel toffee profile Elijah Craig standard release, Buffalo Trace (if it's available in are your area) and the standard Woodford Reserve. I hope this helps. Cheers!

I’m turning 30 and was considering this bottle only really drank cheap whiskey when I was younger and wanting something super smooth and a lower proof I don’t drink often but want to enjoy it neat any recommendations be greatly appreciated was hoping spend under 50 for a nice sized bottle to last all year

Been seeing this bottle come up in a lot of recommended lists and have definitely seen some split reviews in videos and comments. A lot of people are saying to go with Old Forester 1910 over this if given the choice - even from people who like the Woodford. I guess ultimately it's up to the drinker to decide haha I'm wanting to get into whiskey/bourbon/rye, grabbing my first bottle in the next week or two. Really appreciate this channel - thanks for the informative and concise review! Subscribed.

Thanks. My suggestion would be...get both. 😁 Jump into the world of whiskey by doing a tasting. If you are new to whiskey there might be an initial ethanol note that might overpower other tasting notes, but these 2 bottles are very different once you separate the ABV from all the other good stuff. Let me know what you think once you take the plunge. Cheers!

@@whiskeyisajourney I'll probably start with the Woodford, the tasting notes sound like things I would enjoy... when my palate gets there. I'm probably also going to grab a bottle of straight bourbon to mix into cocktails - any suggestions there? I was thinking of just grabbing Bulleit, it's like $25 here

@@whiskeyisajourney I would have to say just this one as the other Woodford Reserve is less bitter and/or much less oak in it.
