We entered this pairing into our blind sample pool because they're both "double oaked" offerings from two large distilleries with similar proof and price points. We wanted to see which we'd rather buy again if we could only purchase one.

    🏆 🏆 OUR SCORING RUBRIC EXPLAINED 🏆 🏆
    ‱ HOW TO Evaluate Whiske...
We use common sense “thumbs up” scoring where thumbs equal points.
We like it? Thumbs up = one point. 👍
We love it? Two thumbs up = two points. 👍 👍
Take it or leave it? Just okay = half a point. đŸ€
We hate it? Thumbs down = no points. 👎
We just so happen to score across 5 categories (up to 10 overall points are available):
    ‱ NOSE: Aroma
‱ FLAVOR: Taste and overall flavor profile
‱ EXPERIENCE: Overall experience on the palate
‱ RETAIL SCORE: Availability and pricing
‱ CONSUMER SCORE: Would we buy a product again or not
TASTING SCORE: Nose + Flavor + Experience
REAL WORLD SCORE: Tasting Score + Retail Score + Consumer Score
DISCLAIMER: Our scoring is merely a reference point to compare different pours over time. We believe whiskey is to be enjoyed and shared with those you care about--that's what our channel is all about and why our scoring system is largely tongue-in-cheek. We hope it can serve as a resource to you inasmuch as you can use it to compare to your own preferences and hopefully help inform your future purchases. Whiskey, just like life, is best when you don't take it too seriously and you simply enjoy the journey. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers!

I agree on the WRDO. When it hits your initial pallet it has so much promise but has a strange finish. I love the mouth feel and it’s not a bad whiskey but if I had to chose I would pick the OF 1910.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  Pƙed 2 lety

Thanks man! In upcoming episodes we do a better job of communicating it concisely and hitting on the fact that it’s more of a bell curve style of scoring than your traditional 0-10 scale (which often puts everything in the 6-10 range). For our palates most stuff is decent to good and fairly interchangeable with other products if something isn’t available. There are very few outliers that can crack into the 7-8 range and fewer still that would score 9-10. Most things are right there in the middle at 4-6 and some less than good products are the 2-3 range. Very little is awful enough to fall below that. It’s different but hopefully interesting to others.

When I first opened my bottles, I hands down preferred the 1910. Over time, however, I honestly began to pick up on more of 1910's likely youth, it sort of felt like blending perfectly aged bourbon with a craft bourbon. Doubled Oaked has more of a mustiness that consistently reminds me of Riesen candy, so I'd probably pick that.

I saw this video (just now) and had to watch it since a friend of mine told me (again, today) that Woodford Reserve Double Oaked will completely change the way you view Woodford Reserve. So with My first pour of WR Double Oaked, let's watch...
And I see in the first 20 seconds Erin approves of these and doesn't want to share! I had to put the video on hold because I couldn't figure out the nose, then after five minutes it hit me, it's butterscotch. I see others say the nose is maple syrup, butter...I'm weird, it smells of butterscotch. On the palette I'm getting a lot of oak, it's dry and almost bitter. It has a pretty long finish too. Just put a little water in it and the dry oakiness just went through the roof! I'm going to have to revisit this stuff, but as of this first sip it's:
    Nose - Thumbs up
Flavor and Experience - Just OK
    Retail - Thumbs up
    Consumer - Just OK
    Real World Score - 3.5
I t was kind of funny watching a year old video of you guys since I discovered and subscribed to your channel earlier this year. Josh has always come across as the one with more bourbon experience, Erin seems to have been a little timid a year ago but now...she's right there with Josh. This comment made our day, Jeffrey! We're not brave enough to go back and watch our old stuff but remember this being a good one, and the mixing of the two of these at the end being the genesis of the banana pancakes blend we talk about so often these days. Totally agree on the WRDO dry bitterness at times, which is a big reason why we do like to find store picks of it when we need a bottle. Those seem to steer clear of that for the most part. Great breakdown in your commentary!

I’m one of those that likes ECTB (when you can find it) because it smells like s’mores and I prefer the palate. The Woodford has that butter maple pancake smell, but like someone mentioned in the comments, the taste changes for me depending on the day. The 1910 has more of a burnt brown sugar and pan fried banana nose to me. I flip flop between the 1910 and the WRDO. Sometimes I like them and sometimes I don’t.

We always forget about ECTB as we never see it in our local market. Wonder if Heaven Hill has any plans to make it a staple product or if it will always remain limited. Thanks for watching and commenting Jose!

I bought Coopers craft 100 about 2 months ago and I didn’t really enjoy it last week while out I got a glass of 1910 didn’t seem to enjoy that too much also. My brother bought me a bottle of Regular woodford reserve same reaction. I keep hearing about how good double oak is but so far the only brown Forman product I enjoy is Jack Daniels.

Sounds like some valuable intel toward what you like! If 1910 isn’t your jam then Woodford Double Oaked is almost sure to be a miss. They’re so close yet slightly different, and Jack does has a bit of a unique profile within the Brown Forman family.

@@stuffandwhiskey so crazy enough, I’ve been drinking these more since I posted and I’ve seen y’all also have had some change of hearts/minds and I have one myself now...I still like both...but now I’m liking the OF1910 more if I’m just going to have a drink neat late in the evening.

I’m less shocked by the tasting notes and way more shocked that I drank a pour of that same WRDO less than half an hour prior and didn’t recognize it within the blind at all. 😂

I had the feeling that the two were paired deliberately and then the pairs were randomly selected, although I could be mistaken. That is how I would have done it if I was them because there are definitely some combinations you would not want to have together. But I’m not 100% sure because they did not go into great detail on that part.

I opened and blinded the 1910 and Double Oaked at same time. Both had a cola base but the 1910 for me tasted like a flat cola and the DO had great flavor alot of cherry with some chocolate and nutty notes. The 1910 was flat soda with a hint of vanilla and slight cherry note that differed from DO. However the more the bottles went down and were open they changed alot for me. I started getting the really sweet maple syrup note on the DO and the cherry, chocolate, & Nuttiness went away. The 1910 got alot better the cherry was more forward and the flat cola note disappeared. I started off liking the DO a lot more but then as the opened up i gravitated more to the 1910 but DO was still very good just became really sweet. I also tried the 1920 as well at same time and that was cherry cola and amazing and definitely a step up from the other two.

Love this comment, Paulie! We find that these double oaked/double barreled products change pretty dramatically with exposure to air as you drink through a bottle. For that reason we do enjoy having one of each around, and do find that mixing the two (and even adding some 1920 into that blend as well) to be particularly great!
