  • The Last Dance has filled the void left by no live sports, but it has led some to question whether it's a documentary or puff piece. I attempt to settle that debate in this video. Have you seen The Last Dance? What did you think of the series and where do you feel it lands? Let me know in the comments below.

I have not seen "The Last Dance" as I am not drawn to wither sports or the documentary genre. Having said that, I want to ask what distinction do you make between the terms "puff-piece" and "propaganda?" Both terms have similarities but also vital distinctions and, most importantly, aims/goals/desired-outcomes. Being from Detroit, I never followed the Bulls, felt Michael Jordan was a wasted asset UNTIL they added even a few quality players around, or guys like Pippin stepped-up their contribution to the team. I do not know the "controversies" surrounding Jordan or anyone else in the film, so I feel unbiased in saying that I agree with Ken Burns that filmmakers -- especially documentarians -- have to have their independence over ALL content, all access, etc. Only people who "know the truth" about any or all aspects of Jordan's and the Bulls' (to a lesser extent) motivations. But the question the documentary maker and viewer is "Who actually 'The Truth?' What parts of 'The Truth?'" etc. Perhaps it's the Human Condition that NO ONE can completely "know 'The Truth" or the whole story or not have conscious or unconscious biases or motivations? Embedded in this comment are several reasons why I am perhaps lukewarm on Sports films and Documentaries. Finally, like "The Tiger King," I have zero plans to watch this documentary for the reasons stated. Thanks and great, thought-provoking review.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Mark! I suppose a puff piece is a milder form of propaganda (think of it in terms of hot sauce), but I usually think of propaganda in terms of promoting specific ideas or made on behalf of a larger entity, be it an organization, religion or political party whereas puff piece is meant to inflate an individual or project.
I'm curious about your lack of desire to watch THE LAST DANCE (and TIGER KING for that matter). I watched and thoroughly enjoyed both, even if I don't think that as stalwart examples of the documentary form. Do you typically watch docs? If so, what kinds do you more gravitate towards? Cheers!

@@cineflect Thanks for your comments. I just don't really like the documentary form....sometimes it's on some "principle" that no online material or Hara's book answered (for example, "The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On" is a great documentary....but....I have deep questions about whether the central character thought he was "acting" or whether/to what extent he embellished/invented the story). Mostly, I cannot explain why I am not drawn to docs....anymore than I can explain why Comedy doesn't interest me...or Animation. I wish I could be more helpful!
