I think to perform a character perfectly will require a bit of overlapping personality trait between yourself and the role you play. Maybe that's the trait you're hiding from others or a trait you don't like, or something you don't even notice yourself, but deep in your heart you still got that, and that helps you to really relate to the role you are performing.
