- This is the final video in my series of recreational tree climbing and
in this video we complete the climb to the top of the tree using 2 lanyards, a technique known as ALT or alternating lanyards techniques.
High in the canopy, the best place to be
It is one challenge to climb way up a tree but quite another when significant tasks are added to the activity. In your case, you not only managed to record audio and video but ultimately did an absolutely stellar job, making this A-grade production -- all while climbing a tree! I am sure there is much more that had to go into it than most of us imagine, especially in the planning. Your demonstrations were clear as well as honestly presented as you shared your thinking while dealing with various challenges. I am so glad that you found your niche in making these videos. You are providing the world something of great value.
Thanks for those kind comments, yes took a bit of planning, but all part of the fun. I tried to imagine what I wanted to know when I first started and then tried to put the information over in the vidio. Thanks again for the comments, all the best Pat
Patrick Dickinson video* but this is awesome! It’s made me think about when I go on tree climbing on my residential trip, now I’m less scared of it :)
Absolutely agree, this is an excellent production.
Enjoy every minute. Superb editing, commentary, skills and unique atmosphere in you production. Thank you👍
Thanks really appreciate your comments, all the best Pat
Hi Patrick you inspired me to get into the tree climbing hobby, now after a grigri, ascenders, slings ,friction savers ,pulleys and a bunch of ropes and carabiniers, land yards etc. AND double check everything before acting on the rope.... A great and sincere GRACIAS AMIGO from. Shreveport LA.
Great to hear from you Eliseo, so much gear is,nt there just to climb a tree, but what a amazing place to be, all the best Pat
I remember when we were kids someone had secured a pallet to sit on right in the top of one of the trees in the local wood that was out of bounds unless you'd reached a certain physical size and level of bravado as it required both ! and as I now walk by looking at where it once was I'd not even attempt it without the gear you use .
It really is a different world up in the tree tops , so relaxing , and I remember spending hours up there , you could see over all the other tree tops to the houses and fields surrounding and you'd often see people stood below or walking by , who were totally oblivious to your presence high above them . Same with the wildlife .
Hi Rik sounds a just like my childhood, requiring nerves and ability which I would certainly be up for, all the best Pat
@richm2835 Yup, I have similar memories. At 8-10 years old I scrounged some scrap boards, dragged them halfway up an old hemlock at the edge of our woods, wedged them across some branches making a small 'deck'. No climbing gear, no ladder or steps, just an old short 'haul' rope. I don't remember how I managed to climb up and down -- there were some dead limbs below the 'green' ones which I must have clambered up and down. 65 years latter I'm watching/listening to Pat (and others), assembling gear and eying a 100 ft white pine and several 50+ ft white ash in our woods and thinking about tree camping. Good times.
Thanks Pat for your inspiration and expertise!!!
I love your Idea with this yellow belt and the knob, saved by the carabiner. Did not see such a caring approach yet. Tree has best treatment possivle and safety is given uncompaeable to all the other approaches. Thank you very much for this idea! Very much appreaciated. Climb safely and all the best!
Thank you for your kind comments, got to look after these old trees, and it's so easy to do. Such a wonderful place to spend a day high in nature's canopy, all the best Pat
Another great video Patrick, thanks again for all the time and effort, and taking the risk as well!
Thanks Mark, very enjoyable vidio to make, all the best Pat

I admire your attention to details, safety, and making it look easy. Thank you.
You are very welcome.... safety is the No 1 priority, certainly a lot to learn, but thats what makes it so interesting, thanks Pat
Once again , brilliantly informative !
These are the only climbing videos I've watched and totally understood !
Many thanks again Patrick ! 🙂👍
Thanks again Mark, and glad the video came across well, thanks Pat
Reminds me of when I was 16 free climbing to the top of some large pine trees just blowing in the wind. Truly a memorable experience. Great filming job! Could not have been easy.
Thanks Philip, enjoyed making these vidios all the best Pat
Yeah, I grew up in an area with a lot of tall pine trees and as a young kid (basically grade school to early high school age), we would climb to the tops of those pines. The tallest were probably 75-100 ft or so... Sometimes we would fall somewhere along the way and the limbs would slow us down so that we didn't hit the ground with full force and even when we did finally hit the ground, this was pretty old forest, so there was quite a bit of pine straw under those big trees -- a 50 year old tree probably had 50 years of pine straw under them. Surprisingly, none of us ever broke any bones in these endeavors -- apparently, Darwin was sleeping on the job... These days, I wouldn't do anything like that without a climbing harness and safety ropes. I've determined that gravity sucks a lot more as you get older and I've broken rips from falls that are a **lot** closer to the ground just around the house.
So, at my age, why in the world am I looking at videos like this? Just getting some ideas for going up in one of the trees on my property so that I can trim some of the limbs that are dead or just need removing. It's a live oak tree, so not that tall (maybe 40-50 ft) and I don't need to go all the way up, but it's further up than I'm willing to fall at my current age, especially with a chain saw and since the landing point would most likely be on the concrete.
Fascinating series. I never knew there was recreational tree climbing. Interesting and well presented thanks from Orlando Florida.
I bet most of my comments on tree climbing from the US, it is a lot more popular there, slowly growing in the UK, thanks Pat
Thanks for the inspiration!
I am new to tree climbing in Australia, but this has sparked the flame for me to take it! thanks a lot!
great advice and I cant wait to see life from the canopy!
It's amazing up there Manuel, just so different, and so interesting with all the different gear. I,am glad I have if items the spark, all the best Pat 👍

@@patrickdickinson6492 Thank you for your awesome climbing videos, stay safe broo .
Thanks Pat, another cracking video, reminds me of My tree climbing in Donkey woods, but that’s 50 years ago no ropes!
Yes David, happy days, happy days, who needed ropes in those days, thanks Pat
Cheers for that Pat, looking forward to seeing what's in store next time. 😎👍
Thanks Damian, little bit different, fancy a bit of wildcamping next, will have to see, all the best Pat
I have been watching wild camping videos and stumbled upon one of Pats, what a action man he is. lovely varied content, well filmed and edited and I appreciate the lengths he goes to, to produce a high quality video. well done Pat.
Hi and thanks for watching my vidios, vary with my interests, but hoping to do some more wildcamping soon, all the best Pat
Thanks for a great series. The Internet is awash with 5 minute clips that never stitch together the whole thing from start to finish like this.
I bought a Petzl ID after watching this and have been climbing an Oak tree in the garden. Can’t wait to try out other methods like zig zags and chicanes and camp in a portaledge.
Excellent job. Thanks Pat!
Hi Duncan, yes a great hobby, so much to learn but its interesting, and the rewards when high up in a tree...just wonderful.....all the best Pat
Fab series Pat , thank you for sharing this , keep it up , been watching your vids for a while , first time commenting , 🙂👍👍👍
Thanks for commenting Robyn, hope to be back out wildcamping soon, all the best Pat
Great video, clear demo of how it works.
But that took a serious amount of work to film so well, particularly as you were working alone. So kudos for the effort expended too!!
Thanks John, yes bit of a challenge, but all part of the fun in making a vidio, all the best Pat
well done, when you love what you are doing it makes it easy to teach.
Yes your right, love it up in the trees, different and amazing, all the best Pat
Another excellent video.
Thanks for the comments, appreciate it, thanks Pat
Very informative and good instructions. Thank you
Glad it was helpful Jarle
Wow! Pat - Really interesting & your explanation is first rate, many thanks for this series. I did a 1.5 kilometer canopy zip line tour last week, which is my limit, but it was certainly exhilarating. 👍👍😎
Sounds very exhilarating that, love to have a go, glad you enjoyed the vidio, thanks Pat
Superb video, inspired me to do the same, thanks Patrick.
Hi Tim, a lot of gear and tequniques to learn, but it's interesting and once your up in the canopy, just amazing, thanks Pat
You've given me some good advice. Thank you
Your very welcome Les, thanks Pat
Another great video ! You could get part-time work as a tree surgeon. I watched a guy lopping trees in next doors garden and he wasn't safe ! You have nailed how to get safely high into a tree !
Thanks Malcolm, did think of it once, but happily retired now, all the best Pat
We managed to secure money from the school and are going to be taking a three day course on safety and everything then we are going 🌲 climbing 🧗♀️ for sure thanks again pat
Well I have got to this video I'm watching your videos from start to finish loving your videos I wished I had tried this when I was a young lad the next video is the one I started watching you
A lot of gear and tequniques involved, but what a great place to be, high in agree, thanks Pat
brilliant video that gave me loads of ideas on working through the canopy (as well as the challenges of working with kit while wearing gloves)
Just amazing up there, another world.... all the best Pat
Great stuff Patrick! I'm a rec climber in the US and enjoy your videos. I use the same SRT system you do. Looking forward to your next video!
Thanks for that, and nice to hear from somebody with similar interests, thanks Pat

Thanks John,it's a great way to climb, nearly free climbing, but very safe, and that's what counts, thanks Pat
great video there Pat, great info too.
Thanks Nell, little bit different, all the best Pat
Great video Pat.
Thanks Stuart
Hi Pat, This really has been a great mini series, very enjoyable to watch and I appreciate the effort that must have gone into making these three videos. We did some simple rock climbing and abseiling in the scouts so I think I can understand the feeling of being up there in the canopy. Looking forward to your further adventures up there. Good luck from Spain!!
Glad you enjoyed it....really hard work, just the climbing never mind all the filming as well, but its different.....Pat
Since you posted this video, we at least know you made it safely back to earth, Pat. Seems there would be so many ways to get yourself tangled and trapped up there with all those ropes dangling from your waist. I have much admiration for your skills and daring sense of adventure. Thanks for sharing with us.
Hi Mark, yes can look a bit alarming but every bit of kit has a job to do, and it all goes together and is very safe. Nice to hear your comments, all the best Pat
New climber st 67 here. Of all the videos I've bookmarked, I keep coming back to your intro to SRT. This is the2nd of yours I've watched. I was hoping to get the info on rappelling down.
Hi Russel, might not of included it in detail rapelling down, such alot to fit in one video, may have to show more in another video in Spring, thanks Pat
excellent showing how to....Thanks very much
Your very welcome Vincent, great way to climb trees with lots of branches, nearly like free climbing, but you are safely secured all the time, thanks Pat
Great Video Pat not an easy thing to do climb and talk but you get the experience of being in solitude up there pretty high that when looking down. Good series of videos stay safe and see you in the next.
Thanks David, took a bit of planning to get the sequences right, but happy with the results, thanks again Pat
Fantastic! Thank you so much for the content :-)
Your very welcome, thanks Pat
Why would anyone want to give this a thumbs down is beyond me! Great Trilogy and if you will excuse the comment then, I now realise why we Midlanders call you lot, 'Northern Monkeys'. LOL. The last time I climbed a tree must be 55 years ago using 6 inch nails found on a building site. Probably not eco friendly, but we had great fun. However, as I said in previous clips, I ain't going up any trees nowadays, rather watch you doing it instead. Looking forward to your next adventure whatever that might be. ATVB, Robert in Bulgaria.
Interesting video, good work...😀👍
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it Raimo, all the best Pat
I’m surprised no one has walked past your stuff at the bottom while ur up the tree i would constantly be worried about my stuff at the bottom being taken as you would never get down fast enough to stop anyone.
Great videos again Patrick!
Yes I do worry ,I tend to climb in secluded, private areas, thanks Pat
Excellent again Pat. Langy is climbing the next one with you.😁
Love to take him along with me, could even get him down a drain as well, haha, thanks Keith, all the best Pat
Wow caving and via ferrata type techniques in a tree........ fantastic 👍
Thanks John
This looks awesome, I'd love to try this on various trees to get to the very top. Good video friend.
A great way of climbing, basically free climbing, but you are anchored and safe all the time thanks Pat
Such an amazing man !
Thanks Mark, very kind of you to say, thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 your welcome pat.look fwd to all your future adventures!
Yet again, Absolutely amazing. That looks to technical to me sir Pat so I will keep my feet on solid ground. Be careful out or up there.
Thanks for that, not too bad when you build your confidance up, always careful, all the best Pat
The camera does a super job of following every move with the ropes and tackle.
Thanks Andrew, GoPro mounted on my helmet, thanks Pat
Still my favorite is the string to sling to rope.
Excellent videos, i do rock but it has inspired me.
Yes very popular near were I live with Stanege Edge only 3 miles away, but trees are all over, waiting to be climbed, all the best Pat
Well done!
Thank you so much....just amazing up there, with the lanyards it's like free climbing, but in a safe way, always attached...... thanks Pat
Congratulations Patrick.
Thank you for that, Pat
excellent last episode to the series Patrick.
Thanks Bill, back out wildcamping next I think, thanks Pat
good video, thanks!
Thanks for that, Pat
thx for great content will try it out
Hope you enjoy!
Great vid mate. When I spoke before about me and my mate climbing everything in the comments of one of your previous vids, it amazes me that we did it all without ropes etc. Dont get me wrong I have solo'd on rock (not hard stuff I'm not that good) but ropes on trees seem alien to me. I'm all for it obviously. I am SPA qualified and I have led loads of groups on rock so I'm all for safety and now I've seen it in action I wonder if I should get some gear and ring Andy up. It would be like the old days. We wold even go from tree to tree in some parts of the wood. Brings back great memories.
Hi Billy yes climbing trees will open up new challenges for you, there all over the place and there are some big uns out there, keep on climbing, all the best Pat
WELL THAT WAS FUN, time to get out my tree climbing gear and head up ☮️
Best place in the world Jim, high up in a tree, all the best Pat
Thank you for the video. I like tree climbing too and do it by the same way and equipment like you, but I use full duplication- two ropes, two friction savers as well as ASAP LOCK device on the second (safety) rope. Moreover, I use CROLL on my ASTRO BOD FAST for ascension.
Good luck!
Thank your Sergel, we both have a interesting and exciting hobby, such a great place to be, high on a tree, thanks Pat
Thank you.
Your very welcome Keith
Hello Patrick. Just got in from work and discovered Part 3 of your series. Again beautifully filmed and a great explanation of the techniques involved . Along with sound advice at the end. I have been inspired by this series of videos and would like to have a try so will have to find out if there is anything locally available. Thanks again, Andrew.
Hi Andrew and thanks for the kind words, was a pleasure to make, and such a lovely location in my favourite woodland, thanks Pat
Hi pat was only thinking of you at the weekend when I was in Sheffield travelling out of the city on chesterfield rd when I spotted where you camped on that cliff edge nr that Homebase
Yes I visit that spot and have some thoughts for another camp up there, great location, thanks Pat
Thanks pat👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Your very welcome, great way to climb.... thanks Pat 👍
Mr.Dickinson, muito obrigado pelos seus vídeos!!!!
Thank you 😊
Great content
Thanks Adam
Ur very welcome
Hello once again from Oklahoma Pat, I so love your videos, I have a question . am I right in assuming ,after your decent , to retrieve cambien saver, one ties a knot at the end of the decent rope, targe enough to slip through large ring on cambien, but catches on small ring, that seems like only way to retrieve it I suppose.
Hi again, yes you have got it slot on, I tie a knot like you say or you can fastern a plastic ball on that does the same thing, thanks Pat
Love the videos, Patrick! You are a wealth of knowledge - I saw on your Flickr profile that you used to be a power engineer? Maybe you could do some videos about your work?
Hi Emily and nice of you to comment, hopefully left work behind now, yes I would have some interesting stories but, these explores and wildcamping alot more interesting and Fun, all the best Pat
I use my long lanyard with a Prusik like a double rope system using the same hand ascender and pulley that you use. Petzl,ISC,Yale and Black Diamond!! Stay safe
Great and speedy way to accend a tree, well suited to our trees with many side branches, thanks Pat
Thank you
Your very welcome, thanks Pat
Thanks Patrick.
Your very welcome Tom, thanks Pat
thank sir!
Your very welcome Hieu, amazing up there, all the best Pat
I like my 2 in 1 flip line. Convenient.
Yes John, very useful bit of kit.... thanks Pat
