Nice video Chris. Will you have to re-split the hard maple? Will you have to sort the cherry, birch? Anxious to see how the processor handles straight wood. GNI
In my area we have a little hard maple mixed in with tons of soft maple. Hard Maple is a tree I have always struggled to identify in log form from soft. Any tips??? Can't wait to see it all processed!👍
The bark is different...more smooth on hard (rock/sugar) and soft (red) maple has a pinkish cambium layer under the outer bark and hard maple usually has a dark grey bulls eye in the middle (heart wood). I agree it is tough some times!
@InTheWoodyard I will think I have it figured out looking at the stump and then will look up into the branches, and the bark looks completely different! Thanks for the suggestions, Chris!
As an (almost) arborist, and who works in trees in the daily, I've gotten very used to feeling the weight of them, thus can usually tell the difference just by that on the limb wood (in the absence of leaves). Both the Red and Sugar maples burn super nice, steady, and clean
@IloveSPIDERZ The charts I use say there is only 500lbs difference between hard and soft maple per cord of wood. That is fairly close ... I think some of my issues with identifying are all the hybrid types of Maple. The bark can vary a lot for one type to another...
How much is Hard Maple cost customer 1/3 ? I can see lots of nice pieces for the processor and some I could make a new shovel handles mixed in, you won’t need to split them just cut them as 16inch rounds😀
Nice size wood. Is there other names for hard maple ? Any way, I gotta get back to cutting today. Did some yesterday. Slow going. But a little each day gets er done.

Brother Kenneth Carlson covered this calculation in a video that aired last winter.
He had a measuring stick and he walked around the piled up logs with it.
Then he added and multiplied and gave you the volume of the pile.
Give or take a face cords or two
It is done by measuring the average height and length when it is on the trailer.
yup
@@InTheWoodyard cool.
@@jeanvaljohn3921 thanks
I never hear you talkin about Walnut don't you have any
Once in a while, it is mostly made into lumber and is average firewood.
How do they determine a "cord" by volume (measure) or do they also use weight?
Does that price include delivery? (trucking)
@@two-strokesmoke7289 Seems to, they don't make much profit on it, but it's getting rid of rubbish wood that they can't make decent lumber from. Pays the fuel/wear & tear and driver's wages no doubt.
Otherwise it would probably get processed/chipped and pelleted for burning in a power station maybe?
It is an average of measurements taken on the load to figure it.
yes.
They make good money on it but the real money is in the veneer and #1 lumber logs that are creamed off the job first, firewood is low grade wood.
Do you still get logs from John?
No, I was told to find another logger they did not have any available for the last few months. So.....?
Do you ever tip the driver?
🤔
🤨
You missed it in the video
He actually mentioned that he did give him a tip.
It's a good practice to read others comments prior to
asking or commenting.
Yup, it was in the video, must not have watched it???
Ya I asked prior to finishing the video. I have my first paid load coming soon. Sorry for not finishing video prior to asking. Ibdid like the tip in beer idea. Ty
Do you have a processor ?
Or are you bucking and splitting old school?
You just bought yourself another job!!!
Yup, I just got 3 more loads!
Now thats some perfect Halverson logs Chris, Definitely your little Processor should chew them up fast, 😂🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
Yup, it will eat well!
When load off wood turn up to the wood yard, its like Christmas time celebration...
I think Chris have to invest allot in this 🪵 business upfront, untill winter comes, and that's when he gets back all Benjamin's pay back?
Chris do u run your Husky's at 40:1 or 50:1 ratio?
Ash and hard Maple is money in the bank - fast cash, if i was u, i would stock it up, later u might not get any at all...
50:1 as recommended. Yup, I got 3 more loads!
👍👍
Thanks!
