This would be a great gift for family with kids / older people / people with issues with vision. Most NZ firewood / fireplaces are around a foot - note that there is a larger version of this splitter 😎👍 chur

"This is working great! I'll just load pieces that are too tall.." "I like how safe it is! I'll just hold onto a piece while I hit it..." "I think it'd work better bolted to a log... like how it's displayed on every side of the box!" "I love that it's built in New Zealand... except how it isn't!"

Kindling doesn't have to be just as long as the firewood. I always cut several half-length rounds from logs specifically to split into kindling. It requires noticeably less force to split the shorter pieces. A screw or nail driven through a 1-foot 1x2 makes a very safe way to stabilize the target board for splitting. Put the screw at one end of the board and give it a slight tap with the hatchet. I've heard it called a "chicken stick" but I call it a "safe-split kindling stick." No more nervous fingers. : )

The splitter doesnt need to be taller. Notice the hole in the base of the splitter. That allows the user to cut a hole in the bottom of whatever surface you anchor the splitter to. Then fit it the underside of the anchor with an adjustible receptacle beneath the opening. That way you can cut longer pieces and still have easy access to them to further split them down.
Edit nevermind seems you noticed that on your own later in the vid lol

That log splitting drill bit is still the best I have used so far. I mean if you have room for a strong cordless drill in the field, but that drill bit splits wood with amazing ease. Heck, id say even better than those hydraulic presses they use to make kindling at this arborist company that sells the trees they chop down as firewood here in town.

Here's a thing about New Zealand. No-one ever told them they were too small to be important on the world stage. So they just go on being awesome and making excellence. I say this as an Ozzie. So many things from Australia that made us famous are actually Kiwi. Phar Lap the racehorse. Tim Finn from Crowded House/Fleetwood Mac. Russell Crowe. Sam Neill. Taiko Waititi never had to get to Australia for a pay day, because he's totally brilliant. Our trans Tasman rivalry is a thing between us, but we seem to share it pretty well. We rag on their accent like crazy, much the same way as the South Park guys do about Canadians.

Good demo. Yes, I very used one of these, and they do have some issues you have to get used to, but they can be pretty productive. Personally, I use an old cheap hatchet, as a handled wedge, and a 2 or 3 pound mallet to split kindling. I might rather use one of these, but I'm a cheap skate and haven't bought one. I did buy a froe, however, to split some longer boards and have been wonder how it'll work for kindling. I like the lever action they provide.

Here is a shortcut for removing a splinter/sliver. Especially with kids. Have someone hold a pair of binoculars backwards where the eye piece is against the splinter. This will enlarge the splinter around 50-100 times larger and be much easier to see then looking through the big end, you can more safely remove it. So tiny lens to splinter and look through the big lens to magnify it. Have fun!

To avoid the height problem, position the splitter over a hole. Perhaps on a table made of 2x4s perhaps 24in off the ground. Then unsplit wood could be stacked beside ready for processing. The splitter could be held in place with pairs of steel bolts screwed up from below making "slots". That way, the device's portability could be preserved. Or perhaps an old oil drum cut in half with a bridge over top. Remove splitter w/bridge to access the wood you've processed beneath.
