- India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is heading to Russia for his first visit since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Modi's trip will include a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he last met in Russia in 2019. India is a major buyer of Russian arms - and has also become a key buyer of Russian oil following Western sanctions placed on Moscow over its actions in Ukraine.
While Modi has not condemned Russia, he is under pressure to secure the release of Indians allegedly misled into fighting for Moscow in Ukraine. Reportedly lured with the promise of lucrative jobs and education but ending up on the frontlines.

The 1971 war of India Pakistan was the topic of debt for India when USA was sending war ships to help Pakistan and Ukraine was sending weapons. Russia was the only country to help India. They are in debt of Russian help.

Ukraine is defending its sovereignity and teritorial integrity something it has a right to do while Russia is the invader that started a war of conquest. Ukraine payes foreighners the same amount as its own soldiers while Russia officially has mercenaries which it payed much more them regular aoldiers. Joingong the side that is defending its sovereignity and teritorial integrity is helping the victim while joining the invader is helping the agressor.
Peoppe who join Ukrainian army come from very different backgrounds but most of them could make allot more money working in their own countries. The motivation for them is very different. Some want to stop Russia in Ukeaine as they fear Russia is a threat to other coubtries others see Russia as an enemy to the West as Russia has been hurling agresive rethoric against the West for a long time. Foreighners that join Russia similarly to most Russians fight purelly for money.

It's weird that Putin gets to collect on India's supposed moral debt to the Soviet Union, which saw India as a pawn in its game of geopolitics. Actually, 'moral' is the wrong word in this context, because morality doesn't enter into India's current relationship with Russia.
Oh well, we can put India's permanent seat in the UNSC on hold indefinitely. Permanent members need a moral backbone and they can't be beholden to others.
