I like the textured background better. Interesting medium. I’d never heard of these watercolor crayons. Thanks for the tutorial!
So beautiful! I love the combination of those two mediums! Thanks for this tutorial!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love those pastels used with the mushrooms. Love this fantasy type colour palette. Thanks so much. Great video. Very helpful. 🌺
Your talk about learning by doing made so much sense to me. Different medias are easier to me than others but I didn't know that till I gave it a try
They just glow. Great lesson. Thank you.
Thank you for talking about using the products to get to know them. I have TONS of supplies, but barely touch them. I end up buying more stuff after watching videos without using what I currently have. I love the idea of using Pan Pastels & the Neo Color II as I have both. I've used the pan pastels on a project. Crayons are opened, but not used yet, so I'm looking forward to your new class. Also, I have to walk AWAY from the computer & start using my stuff. I get caught up on watching videos and then never create anything, but keep buying.
I heard a lot about "magic mushrooms" growing up! Now I know what they must have looked like!!LOL! This was an interesting painting. I don't have any pastels of any kind anymore. I gave them to my daughter, but I enjoy watching what you do with them.
😆
That is so beautiful Lindsay. Thank you for sharing
I love it! It needs a fairy somewhere but I love the mushrooms and I really like how the background turned out. I think it made the piece look complete. It didn't look finished until you added a little more color in the background! 🥰🥰 this is my type of fantasy vibe.
I'm glad you really broke down how to use the watercolor crayons in this video. I have them and I've had them for a while but I always seem to get frustrated because they never look like your paintings with watercolor crayons. I never realized that you were using barely any water...now that you broke it down in the most simplest way by letting us know to use them like gauche or oil paints a light bulb went off in my head!! Thank you so much and by the way this is one of my favorite paintings of yours. I love magical anything and this piece really puts me in a fairy land!
Aww, thank you:)
I ❤ mushrooms, and these are beautiful Lindsay!
I use clear gesso on just about any surface for pastels, charcoal, and graphite. It was a great discovery. It works just as well as pastel ground, and is cheaper. A great way to provide plenty of tooth, especially for pastels.
I have a set of pan pastels coming in the post. I usually use Unison pastel sticks. Have the neo IIs also, and never realised you could use them over the pastels, because adding the water might disturb the pastel. Going to try this when the PPs arrive, what a lovely effect. TFS your beautiful painting and experiments 💖
Really pretty. Thanks Lindsay
I’m going to try this in watercolor.
very beautiful colours lindsay
So beautiful. Really lovely watching you create. 😊
Really cute painting. I sharpen into pans to use. I love your back ground technique. Thank you Lindsay.
I love these mushrooms. Another Must-do for my list!
Love the colors, love the textures and love the ethereal effect. Thanks for this! 💕💕💕
Thanks!
Very pretty colours ❤️
Absolutely loved this! You’re the best, Lindsay!
Yay! Thank you!
This is absolutely gorgeous I love the vibrancy of colours makes me wanna grab those supplies Thank you Lindsay have a great Sunday 🙂💜🎶🌻👏🏾👍🏿
I love it. Very ethereal.
Beautiful! I really like the textured background you did at the end. I think it added more interest and the mushrooms stand out more for me. Thank you for sharing this video!
Lindsay, you painted such beautiful mushrooms! So unique!
Lindsay, you did it again, I was totally mesmerised by watching you creating this mushroom piece!!! Absolutely beautiful :D :D :D Happy crafting!
Thanks!
Loved this Neocolor 2 watercolor crayon piece Lindsay! You just inspired me to gesso a piece of grey cardstock paper, and to do this in addition to just watching you do it. We’ll see how it turns out! 😂🥰😃👍🏾 Keep on inspiring; thanks for posting this time lapse. 🤩🥰👍🏾🙏🏾
Beware, it's addicting!
Thank you Lindsay for your help with my gouache question. God bless you. Becky B
I have a syndroom and can not sit half an hour. For me are the tutorials gold.
TFS❤️❤️
Art=Lindsay,what a beautiful painting 🎨❤️
Always so much to learn from you! Thank you so much 🤩
This video was great! It really inspired me in a multitude of ways. Thanks again for bringing so much joy, beautiful art, and inspiration!
The mini ice cubes silicone trays that come with a lid, are perfect for those shavings. Since they are mini ice cubes they have lots of "wells". 😊
Good tip!
That was very inspiring. Thank you for sharing this beautiful painting.
Thanks for sharing. Happy crafting on a budget. Happy everything on a budget. Be blessed, be crafty, be positive, be kind. See you in the next video and on the flip side. 😇🌹
thanks for your tips about similar products to Neo colors . Golden information xxxx happy crafts
You are so welcome!
❤❤❤❤@@thefrugalcrafter
This is beautiful, Lindsay--one of my favorites! I think the pan pastels and Neo11's are a great combo. I love the ideas of using gesso on a matboard and saving the shavings in a pill box. I always learn something from you!
The textured background really make the mushrooms stand out. A real 3 D effect.
This turned out really pretty. It's calm and makes me feel calm, too, lol. I love your tip about keeping that cheaper palette on the side to collect and solidify your shavings - what a great idea! I only have the 10-set of the Neocolor IIs and I really love them. I also have a small set of the Derwent Aquatones and maybe 12 or so of the Marabu Water-Soluble crayons. They are all so much fun. Having as many Neocolors as you do would overwhelm me, but I do think adding a few more colors to my set would be helpful. Thanks; have a great week.
This is so pretty. Happy day.
Wow! Your color combinations lift the mushrooms right off the paper! Really sharp! Love it ♥
Wow! These are so beautiful!!! Love your videos.
Thank you!
I love Royal and Langnickel products.
I love this, it's giving me just the push I needed to do some experimental neocolor art again I think
Lindsay love these mushrooms in these colors. I am so glad you said that about the eye test thing. Since I feel the same way and I thought it was just me. lol Now I don't feel so bad. I have not done art in so long I am trying to get back into it. I move 3 houses down from my old house and it was the hardest move I have done. Moving into a full house already and trying to add my things and the stuff already here was so much harder then an empty house. Not enough wall space for my father art work and my own too. and my father in laws also.. Still working on that as we speak. Well I hope to watch some videos to get back on the art horse lol! These mushrooms are so cute . I feel a spark to do some art. I hope I do!!!
You can do it!
I'm happy with it too, girl! I'm going to watch this at least once more cuz I'm old and not a born artist. You remind me so much of my sisters and family with the fast talking.. like a little bumble bee buzzing around happily doing your business. I really love the colors and style of this project . Thank you so very much.. for the teaching moments and your upbeat style delivering them. You make me smile, Lindsay! Love Marcia in Modesto
I think this is one of the best pictures you have done so far. I love it! The combination of pan pastels and watercolor crayons works so well. I really like your choice of colors in this painting. Amazing picture! ☺️
Thank you!
Beautiful! Love the techniques you used, thanks for sharing!
I love your painting. Yesterday's views of it didn't do it justice, but the closeups today really show how 3D it looks. And the colors are perfectly whimsical. Lovely.
On sitting down and doing art rather than observing: I coated a sample paper with Liquitex clear gesso and then tried out my new birthday Pan Pastels. I feared risking the Softtools on the rough gesso surface, so instead of concentrating on doing a nice job, I focused on the Softtools, so my results were ugly. Then I took an old rag and wiped most of the pastel off and ended up with a nice bokeh effect that I can paint on. This is an effect I'll definitely use in the future, and one I wouldn't have thought of without screwing up. I regret buying the Pan Pastels. My art doesn't justify them over cheap pastels (and I definitely can justify artist quality watercolors because of the lessened frustration factor, plus they're prettier than the cheap one.). But I do think I grew as a result of screwing up with the Pan Pastels, so maybe they're worth it just for that. Anyway, so it's fun watching you do art with items I have, while making excellent points about doing art. Thank you.
I am sorry you regret the pan pastel but you have them so you might as well use them. Don't think your art isn't good enough to justify the pan pastels, it is! Enjoy them in good health ❤
Love the painting
This is beautiful, looks like a fairy tale illustration.
For the simple subject matter of mushrooms, you absolutely rocked that palette to give them so much more interest, Lindsay!! That is a gorgeous painting! Using the Pan Pastels with the Caran d'Ache Neo II's was a unique choice of mediums that worked together beautifully. I love it! ❤️👏🏻❤️
Thanks!
I think this picture is so pretty! Man I wish I had your imagination and talent. So happy your had a great time in NY, glad you made it back home safe too! Thank you for all you do. God Bless
Thank you!
I LOVE your picture....beautiful....
And, the process SO MUCH FUN to watch...I thought your Pan pastels really created that really neat background...loved all the mediums/techniques you used.
Lovely.😃
Thanks for this video Lindsey !! I love your watercolor crayons the most !!! More please !!
I'm watching this in critique club right now, also a member of watercolor crayon course lol. I love this tutorial so much. Right up my alley the colors, the subject .. everything. Can you do another tutorial like this? The pastel colors.. maybe an animal? Please
I'll try!
This is beautiful.
I love the magical colors!!! I should use my Neocolor II more often. I love playing with them.
It’s beautiful as always.I love how you chose to use multi colours for the mushrooms. They look so much more interesting than a clump of normal mushrooms.,and the background is perfect .I was thinking it was a bit washed out .I think darkening it a touch enhanced the mushrooms as well as gave the picture more depth too..Love it 🥰
Lindsay, I loved this one! There are so many good options to use. It is lively and I love the added texture in the background. It gives the effect of motion with a softness. I am definitely going to try this. Again you put a smile on my face and makes me think of spring.
Wow.... Totalnie magiczne♥️🥰😘
So beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
How interesting using two entirely different mediums. I love the softness of the PanPastel background, combined with the rich Neocolor 2s. The mushrooms are so pretty and the colours you chose are much more exciting than "beige", haha!
Thanks!
Such pretty colours! Love the pan pastel background too. Gosh, another product to save up for. They look like so much fun and you get a great result so quickly. Thx Lindsay!
So sweet shrooms! I have enjoyed using the Neocolor II’s for years but I have only sharpened in the beginning. I use the stick in a rotating twist that keeps the tip somewhat pointed. I use a fine tip brush and run it along the stick to put down very fine lines or points. Like you said use them and discover your best way of working! I have never been able to finish any artwork in one setting. I have to go away and come back to it later! I know that I drives my wife crazy! She finishes her projects with a flourish and ta da! It’s done! I sure wish I could do that! Wonderful painting and video Lindsay! Thank you for sharing.
I love this. Thank you!
Why do I get the feeling I'm in Wonderland? Thank you for commenting about gouache. I just bought a set from Michael's. I just love this video. But then, you're my favorite art channel. I don't think I've ever not liked one of your videos.
Awww, thanks!
Incredible work!🏵🏵🏵 Great admiration. Hypnotic art.😵💫🥰👌
So beautiful
love them and the colors so pretty
You are so very good at so many different mediums! This is wonderful! Thanks for explaining as you go along! I so enjoy all your videos!
Thanks!
So pretty
I love how the mushrooms almost glow. 😊
Totally agree with your comment that watercolor crayons benefit from a lot of layering, whereas watercolor is better left "fresh" with few layers. My first drawings with crayons looked bland because I gave up too soon. Later I went back, added 1-2 more layers and suddenly they looked so much better!
Now I use them all the time to fix unsuccessful watercolor paintings.
I haven't had any issues with achieving bright red with the crayons. But unfortunately my favorite shades of red (Ruby Red and Carmine) have the lowest lightfastness rating of the entire range.
Love the idea of using these mediums together, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this! I got the basic 15 Neocolor II crayons to get a feel for the medium. Still trying to figure them out. I liked the tip of using them with just a bit of water -I think I might have been using way too much water until now. Thanks for the many tips!!! Also, love the whimsical colour combination.
Hi Lindsey, if you don’t want put that painting under glass, or if you have concerns even if it is under glass about the water crayons and pastels smearing is Krylon gallery series UV archival varnish. It comes in an aerosol it’s number 1378 matte and it is wonderful! Make sure you use it in a well ventilated area because it is stinky, but it’s non-yellowing and it protects against fading, dirt moisture and discoloration. This stuff works great with water soluble crayons on canvas or matte board or whatever you’re using as your substrate.
Thanks! I'd probably mat and frame under glass but I appreciate the reccomendations
Love this! I really love the additional color to the background. ❤️
These are so cool! ❤❤❤
I absolutely loved these magical mushrooms. I will be trying these for sure. Thank you as always!!💕💕 Your eye dr comparison cracked me up!!
This was magical ❤
Thanks!
😱 most beautiful painting ever Lindsay!!! That was amazing! ❤️ it!
Wow, thanks!
I took a picture today of bare oak trees covered in moss or some type of green fungus -lichen? It is very wintry and subdued. I still want to paint it as is but this gave me the idea to do it in color! My choice. I don't have pan pastels or water color crayons but I never realized they are comparable to gouache. I think I'll try a watercolor wash background and gouache. Thanks for the idea and a challenge for me!
That sounds super fun!
Lindsay, I have the supplies. So excited to try this one. So beautiful. Thank you.
Wow this is so ethereal, it's beautiful Lindsay. I bought some pan pastels last year and have not used them yet. This is so inspiring, love it
Gorgeous 😍
Love it!
Fanciful and fun. I love mushrooms. I think I may give this one a try.
Lovely!
Beautiful x
I love this!
Very nice! 👌
Lovely!!!
Thank you Lindsay , very cool , it was something different for me , it looks pretty 😍
Stunning Lindsay, love the colors!
Love this so much. Great water tip. I did not realize that.
Oh Lindsay, you have so beautifully outdone yourself! I've always loved your pieces but this one is just so insanely beautiful. Wow.

I actually have the Lyra Aquarelle crayons and they were 100% what got me back into watercolour as hard as they did. They also increased my love for the subject matter I chose to draw: Succulents.
Personally, I actually found the Lyra aquarelle crayons to be a little chalky. I don't mean they behaved like chalk, I mean the colour was a little dull once the water dries. That said, I am used to using Winsor and Newton's tube watercolours from the 70/80s! They were absolutely great when I made a piece with the main character from the Lego Movie. I think the main culprit was the black çrayon so avoiding using it as a background is probably a good idea. I really enjoyed using them though, evwn if I had to cover it without tube paints.
Anyway, I'm going to go back to marveling at your beautiful piece of magic. Have a great day!
Thank you! I think it's probably the white pigment in the crayons. The caran dache have it too.
Every stage of this process i was like this looks awesome!😍 This was beautiful, it made me want to try this medium 😅.
That is so beautiful! Love everything about it!
