MPN Hero Dr. Shamim Salman: 31 Years of Compassionate Care

MPN Hero Dr. Shamim Salman has dedicated the past 31 years to helping people living
with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Dr. Salman is a hematologist-oncologist at
Richmond University Medical Center, Staten Island, New York. She is a firm believer
that “Every patient needs that little distinctive touch and respect. To interact with the
patient first as a human being, one-to-one level, not just a patient, a number.” As both
a practitioner and educator, Dr. Salman teaches her students that effective patient
care goes beyond clinical trials and textbooks. She reminds her students that empathy
and compassion are critical to a doctor’s ability to holistically care for people living
with MPNs. To Dr. Salman, her love of practicing medicine and helping patients is an
honor and a privilege.
