One thing is false. it does not matter what you do first since Lr doesn't change pixels. and its not effected by other sliders. if you first, reduce noise by 30 then sharpen by 100 you will get the same results as you would if you first sharpen to 100 then reduce noise by 30.
I try to watch all of his videos because they really do explain Lightroom tricks better than almost anyone. This one is among his very best, or most useful, in my opinion.
Anthony, I think this is one of the best lessons I have seen from you and on CZcams. You explained these tools more clearly than anyone I have ever heard...BIG THANKS!
5 year ago I've learned Lightroom watching your tutorial, and that's how I got into Photoshop. Today, I learn new tricks about LR sharpening, again thanks to you. You are a great teacher, thank you for producing real editing videos, not Instagram look alike color toning and presets, likle 80% of the youtubers.
Exceptional video. The only video that I have found on CZcams that thoroughly explains what is happening when you use these various controls. GREAT JOB! Others say do this, do that, but never explain why or what is happening. This video cannot get anymore specific about what happens with all the controls used in the video. I can't say enough about it.
There are lots of somewhat confusing videos out there about this topic - this is not one of them! Really clear and helpful explanation and no silly right or wrong approach. It's one I will certainly recommend!
Anthony. I always wanted to understand about this topic, but I not only have it cleared now but the way you explain was fantastic ! That was the best tutorial I had for sure ! THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Wow! I think this is the best and simplest explanation I’ve seen on this subject. I need to put my new knowledge to the test. Saved for my rewatch list.
Hey anthony! THANK YOU for NOT putting 3 minutes upfront of bla bla nonsense and interrupting the video with SP and making a real precise and to the point video! GREAT JOB! Subscribing!
This is my first comment... EVER.. on a CZcams Video. The explanation in the video is career changing! Thank you so much, Anthony. This video and the correlations you draw between softwares is SO helpful. I am 100% subscribing. Thank you so much for this content!
Best sharpening instruction I have seen by far. It pays too take notes as you go through this so you can implement what he is saying as a routine. I presume this gets natural some point, but I have a way to go on that.
Lots of wonderful positive comments for good reason. The way you explain your workflow (and those confusing "detail" sliders) is very helpful. THANK YOU.
So far the best instructions on sharpening in Lightroom I have seen. Every aspect of sharpening and the pros and cons of it are explained. Excellent job!
WOW This is the best video about sharpening and reducing noise in Lightroom. I've applied this to my edits in Lightroom, the result is amazing. I'm very grateful. Thank you very much.
Want to say a huge thank you for this video. I've been wondering how so many photographers have been able to produce such sharp crisp images. I did everything right but still can't seem to get it tack sharp until I came upon your video! So this is the lesson I've been missing. Thank you soooo much Anthony!!!
There should be an option on this video to vote 10 Thumps Up!! Easily the best video I have ever seen on sharpening!!!!! Heads and shoulders above anything else I have encountered. Cleared up questions I've been struggling with since first switching to digital 11 years ago. I just wish I'd run into it years ago. As it is I am going to have to go back through my favorite images and redo the sharpening because I have clearly been doing it incorrectly. Anthony thank you so much! The images you've saved have been my own!
Anthony - i am sure you have heard this before but it bears repeating - YOU ARE A TERRIFIC TEACHER! This was a fantastic video and very helpful for all kinds of photography. I plan to save it and watch it over and over again. - thanks a million!
Thank you so much for this very informative tutorial. I have been using Lightroom for years and learned subtleties that I never knew existed. Thank you for sharing you expertise. This was very well done.
The Detail slider under Sharpening is actually a mixer between two different kinds of "sharpening": 0 is 100% Unsharp Mask, 100 is 100% Blind Deconvolution. They do different things and are useful in different situations. UM is better and more useful for most photographic usage, BD can actually recover detail lost to diffraction/LPF/etc but at the cost of being very, very sensitive to noise.
Hi Anthony in my early days when I first started buying magazines you were there in with your tutorials and now today they are even better than before you’ve kept up with the technology even today you’re great mentor and I thank you so much I love the way you teach and I can relate to you teach thank you so much thank you so much Anthony you’ve been with me in my journey up till today thank you
By far the most comprehensive and easy to understand presentation of this tricky subject. Great explanation of the actual work flow was very helpful. Thanks!
Extremely useful overview of Sharpening & Noise Reduction. Would really be of benefit if you showed a BEFORE and AFTER image to visually experience the impact of the Gorilla & Cityscape.
Thanks for a perfekt explanation on how it actually works - I have just pulled all these bares around without knowing anything of how they works :-) Best explained tutorial I've ever seen.
This is such gold and classic Anthony Morganti! This is the sort of terrific teaching that led me to subscribe to your CZcams channel before anyone other photographer. And never unsubscribe, unlike most of the other photographer's channels I used to be subbed to. Thank you Anthony so much for all you give us on your channel. Wishing you and your family a fantastic holiday season and a highly supportive 2021, with great health to match. Stay well!
Thank you for the wonderful tutorials! I am so thankful to have found you on CZcams. You are easy to listen to and I’m learning so much. This is video number 3 for me today and I plan on watching them all. You are a wonderful teacher.
Best tutorial. Clear explanation, subject of these sliders is interesting and applicable to pretty much all of photography work. Then you give a clear explanation of how it works, then how to use all of the sliders for your benefit. Plus you add a workflow to go about doing this right and methodical. Will recommend this video everywhere!
Good explanation of different forms of contrast. The gray scale bars really made the point. Also liked hearing about your workflow progression on these adjustments. Have you done a video on using the tone curve vs. sliders? You mentioned that you typically use the tone curve. Would like to see the advantages/disadvantages.
I've soft of heard the opposite when it comes to sharpening for landscapes. I've heard of people dropping the radius below 1.0.... But anyway, I think the illustration using the white and gray image (or you can do this with a black and gray set of bars) really shows you what's happening. Sometimes when you try to learn this stuff on a real photo (Say of a person or a landscape) it's harder to see what each slider is doing so I think the approach of showing it this way really shows people what each slider is doing. Many tutorials I see just use regular images as examples, and like I said, for a beginner, that can be difficult to see the effects of various sliders especially if the image has other issues (ie. focus issues, or exposure issues).
A very clear and well explained account for sharpening and noise reduction of your images in Lightroom. This will benefit the beginner, but is a good reminder to more advanced photographers to remind them about due process. Perhaps you may even find a new way to approach the process through this video.
I really like it when teacher first briefs about basic concepts, that contrast lesson clarifies what each slider actually do 👍💯. Also, I found doing tone curve adjustment after white balance adjustment gives a good idea of how image should appear. Is doing basic (highlight, shadows, white black ) after that is alright, as they are blunt adjustments anyway.
Really good ! The explanation at the beginning of slider effects using the gray-scale image was especially helpful ! I'm getting better at Lightroom but have to admit in the beginning I had no clue what a lot of the sliders meant / were for so I avoided them ... thanks for this tutorial !
Another brilliant explanation of sliders. I have a macro shot of a Prayer Plant Bloom that I've always liked but, was very grainy, I've just followed your instruction and it looks really good now. Thank you for your great instructional videos. I've just climbed another rung on the ladder.
Loved the video. You have explained it beautifully - Like you really meant the people watching to understand. Awesome Job !! This really helped me understand the basics of sharpening and noise reduction. Totally recommended.
Really useful video, thank you so much! I have watched many of your videos on Lightroom and Photoshop over the past 2-3 years and they have really helped me; I am so grateful for the trouble you go to in producing these videos and for explaining things in such a clear and understandable way.
This is fantastic, I've used Lightroom for years fixing some seriously darker, high res images and now I think I need to revisit some of them to see how I could have done them better.
A particularly useful presentation. The LR interface is confusing, with contrast, clarity, and texture sliders, the tone curve tab, and the sharpening tab all performing different variations of some form of contrast enhancement. You explain clearly and also lay out a useful workflow. Thanks!
In this video, I thoroughly explain what happens when we reduce noise and sharpen an image in Lightroom and recommend how you should go about doing it to achieve the best possible results.

Wow!! Fantastic tutorial. You just opened up a whole new world for me. Thank you!
Great explanation of individual sharpening tools in LR, thank you, Anthony.

One of the best vids on sharpening and removing noise in Lightroom available! Great work 👍
Easily the best sharpening video I have seen and I've watched a lot. Outstanding Anthony !

That was a superb video. You just made my life better. Thank you! Now...about the plethora of menu options we all ignore...
Even for someone who doesn't use LR (I use C1 and ON1) this is very useful for me by explaining the principles - many thanks
Excellent video. Thanks for this tutorial.
