An important notice about Majora's Mask 3D: if you play on a modded 3DS or an emulator, you can download a patch called "Project Restoration", made by Leoetlino. It brings back the original Zora swimming, Deku link controls, lets you use transformation masks with the d-pad, removes the ice arrows indicator on water and lets you freeze it anywhere, lets you save the game when playing the Song of Time like in the original (while still keeping the owl save points) and much more. I recommend it hardcore, it removes most of the remake's flaws apart from the brighter look and other minor things

I think the real question is simply "Would you go back and play the original?" For Twilight Princess and probably Windwaker (haven't played Windwaker HD, just the original) then there is no way I would go back to the Wii version of TP. Haven't played Skyward Sword but for Majora's Mask there are improvements but bot everything is and I would rather the original over the remake. Ocarina of Time 3D would be 100% the version I want to play if I could play it on my TV. That is the ONLY thing holding it back.

I played all the originals when they first released, but now I'd never go back to them. The improvements of the new versions far outweigh the few things that weren't done perfect. Honestly I just don't agree with Majora's Mask as the changes are downgrades in significant instances too me and I am perfectly happy with the old blocky N64 graphics. Ocarina of Time though, it depends. I'd usually play on 3DS but sometimes I just feel like laying back and playing on a TV and in that case I will play the original. One notable exclusion from the Majora's Mask 3D segment was the changes made to the Bomber's Notebook - In the 3DS version, it's a lot more streamlined and easier to keep up with, and while that may be a turn away for some players as they enjoyed piecing together the schedules of Termina's inhabitants, I think it really helps with accessibility and allowing more people to enjoy the game.

the reason WWHD runs so poorly during harsh weather and when explosions go off is because they scaled up the resolution of the particle effects and all transparencies to suit the game's HD output without considering the Wii U (and most consoles, up until this past gen really) can't *really* handle such high resolution transparencies without the required fill-rate.
EDIT: also Jon, do yourselfa a *MASSIVE* favour and check out Twilight Princess' NTSC version on Wii, it's a MUCH cleaner experience than what us PAL users got back in the day due to a bug that was never fixed, even in Progressive scan the game used a De-Flicker filter as if it were running on a CRT and it led to a muddy image.

I wish Wind Waker had a gear shift for the quick sail as well so you could slow down and ease off on it when you want to pick up treasure. Also, the parallel joy sticks on the wii u controller make some movement difficult.
I do like Twinmold's new boss fight, but I really wish they hadn't tampered with Zora and Deku link. The Zora Link challenge on the moon is soo much harder in this version because of that. And those glittery patches of ice in the water temple just aren't in line with Majora's Mask's more out of the box puzzle solving. Maybe they could've added a master mode where time went faster like the original. Also, don't understand the removal of the Song of Time not saving your progress. Lost so much progress because it was just out of habit to turn the system off after that. Do love the new expansive bomber's note book and freedom with the song of double time, because a lot of times in the original you would play that and wait around and let the game sit idle so you could do a specific quest.
I believe the horse control in Twilight Princess was due to their experimentation with the horse movement in BOTW and them wanting to implement that same tech in into TP ( believe I saw it in a dev video for the remake). It just...does not work at all because the map is so much smaller in TP and you're moving around much tighter areas.

"And will see you next one" we sure will.
Now my two-cents on this remaster re-matter.
1.- Ocarina of Time 3D: Probably one of the first things you saw about the 3DS, i remember kiosks at stores having this game with only the menu/intro and being blown away. This game also had a time were you couldn't find any copies, so the prices were going up very high.
2.- Wind Waker HD: I got this one very cheap, probably the cheapest and easiest Zelda game to find (at the time) here were i live, well, the Nintendo Selects one. This was part of the Mario Kart 8 promotion with Club Nintendo, and also one of the games offered when Club Nintendo was closing so i think that getting this game, if you had a Wii U, was easier than any other Zelda in general.
3.- Majora's Mask 3D: This is kind of awkward, the Nintendo Direct when it appeared was on early 2015, it was leaked, but it also dissapointed many people, because there was a video of a fake Majora's Mask HD that people kept remembering, and the real trailer wasn't very good, yet there was still a ton of hype. To this day i haven't been able to buy this game sadly.
4.- Twilight Princess HD: Yes, the graphics were overlooked, this is definitely the best version though, no discussions there. While people remembered the Wii U tech demo and other stuff, Twilight Princess had one major thing and that's that the game was already on Wii, meaning that you could already play the game on Wii U... i even recorded a video mocking that back on 2016, never uploaded it at that time, last year i did upload it on my second channel.
5.- Skyward Sword HD: This is very fresh, i remember people being mad at this release because they still disliked Skyward Sword and that they expected Ocarina of Time instead, insisting in that Nintendo doesn't like money... for me it was more like an expected thing. On the other side, i have seen people complaining about the pointer controls on this game, on them not being like on the Wii. I have a Switch, i don't have this game since it costs like a $100 here were i live, and that's no price for a 10 year old game that i wasn't a fan on the first place, i'll keep playing my Wii copy until i enjoy it or get the Switch one when someone decides to sell it for $10.

I think putting Skyward in C is just debative considering where Majora stands. As you said you looked at them depending on how they kept the og games's visions while doing what they thought would be best to do and change in the games, and Skyward Sword isn't necessarily the best in that aspect but it is certainly a sweet spot. Specially when you consider what Ocarina did, which would pretty much become a standard for the next remasters from there, and sometimes the later ones do even better at these. But I guess that what's to expect from the remasters also ranks higher with each one, so I'll give you that

An often overlooked change in Majora's Mask 3D, was that they added a purpose to the Troupe Leader's mask.
Before, all it did was add some dialogue with certain characters and be part of the 100% requirement.
In 3D, it adds in an additional quest with the reward being a new 5th bottle.

Great video for Jon to go out on.
I would say Skyward Sword is my number 1 remake because the 60 fps, the many changes that streamline the game really does matter.
#2 goes to the wind waker because of the wii u gamepad controls, the fast sail and the triforce quest being changed.
#3 Twilight Princess because they added quite a bit to the game and made it look even better.
#4 Ocarina of time, they made it look a lot better, gave us master quest and improved the frame rate. There are some bad changes though like the water temple, sure the boots are great but the temple requires no brain power anymore.
#5 Majoras mask. Missed opportunity, they made the game way too easy with the boss fights and royally screwed up the mechanics with the masked characters. The tension of racing like your life depended on it is all but gone when you can just pick which time of day you want to warp to.

  • @bctalicorn809

In terms of quality, the ranking of the remakes/remasters for me are as follows:
    OoT3D
    Skyward Sword HD
    Links Awakening (2019)
    Wind Waker HD
    MM3D
    Twilight Princess HD
I feel like every change made to OoT3D is objectively superior, and Skyward Sword really benefited from most of the changes. I feel like they could have done a little more with it, but what we got is definitely superior to the original in most ways. And they did a great job of preserving the original art direction.
Link's Awakening is a great 1-to-1 remake with superior control, but they still could've went further with it. And as much as I adore that artstyle, a lot of fans of the original are torn on it. Wind Waker got rid of a lot of pace breakers and added a lot of cool new gamepad features. The visuals were very bloomed out, but it was still incredible to see it brought up to HD. Majora's Mask 3D made a lot of changes. Too many. It attempted to fix a lot that was never broken with the original, and they overstepped. Some may say that this ruins the experience, but it did bring the game some much needed exposure and it was no longer seen as a black sheep in the series. And as for Twilight Princess HD, it added hardly anything and the new lighting really washes out the visuals. And the character models would have benefitted from more polys, as they look really dated when brought up to HD. And the biggest chunk of new content required the wolf amiibo to access it. It shortened the tear missions, but most feel as though it was a bit unnecessary. It did allow for both Wii and controller support, so that was neat, as well as the Wii's mirrored perspective for Hero Mode. So overall, didn't really add anything new, didn't hardly change anything that needed to be, and kept its biggest additions out of easy access for those that didn't buy the bundle.
Some may switch around MM3D and TPHD, but I still feel like MM3D added enough welcome changes to warrant it being remade, while there was no real big selling point for TPHD and it was the second-newest mainline Zelda.

Ooh, yeah, I have to *completely* disagree with that ranking. =P
I had a strong feeling from the outset that any ranking depends on whether you think the changes to Majora's Mask make the game better; personally I look at the changes made as the polish they wish they could have added. MM's original development was extremely time-crunched, so this feels like the game they wish it could have been from the start.
For that reason, I'd rank it number one as the most substantial remaster.
My number two would have to be Skyward Sword; it has so many QoL upgrades, but the inclusion of gamepad controls means I can actually play the game again as a disabled person. Very personal reason there, so YMMV.
OoT has to be my number three there, as it's upgrades are fantastic, but less substantial. Probably my favourite of the remasters.
Fourth spot has to go to Twilight Princess, which has some nice QoL upgrades, but is a fairly paint-by-numbers texture replacement farmed out to fill a gap - and not all of those textures are better; some are extremely careless, and lack artistic direction. More detail and higher resolution doesn't always mean better.
Last spot obviously goes to Wind Waker, which does have some meaningful QoL upgrades, but also completely removes the asynchronous co-op mode, which is a huge loss IMO! Random miiverse messages were a dreadfully poor replacement, even when the miiverse service wasn't shut down.

  • @Jscsonic
    @Jscsonic Před 2 lety +1

Ocarina of Time 3D is definitely the best remake, it makes the most quality of life improvements, while keeping what made the original so special. It respects the source material so much, I remember back when it came out reading that they kept in some of the original glitches from the n64 version specifically with speed runners in mind. Like what? That's so awesome
Anytime I think of Majora's Mask 3D I just get angry, duck that remake.
The only thing that bothers me about Wind Waker HD is the swift sail breaking some time sensitive side quests. I never had an issue with the original tri force quest because I made a point to fill out the map and explore every island as I played through the story during my original play through. So generally when I got a triforce chart I knew exactly where to go already. Though the update is nice.
As for Skyward Sword HD and Twilight Princess HD, I have no issues with them at all, but I still think OOT 3D is hands down the best

  • @LocrianDorian
    @LocrianDorian Před 2 lety +1

Honestly, Majora's Mask is my favourite game of all time, and while I agree with most of the criticisms on the 3DS version, I think it's still a net positive overall, at least for the majority of people. Yes, as a massive fan of the game, I do still prefer the original, but it seems like this is one of the Zelda titles lots of players found very hard to get into, and required some changes to make it more accessible.
The boss battles in the original were more freeform because they were much more simplistic in their design; there really wasn't much to them, it was 100% a combat challenge without a puzzle element which 3D Zeldas usually go for. It's entirely possible that they were planning to have them this way in the original too, but they didn't have the time to do so. For remakes/remasters, it is very common to reintroduce concepts that were left in the cutting floor in the original release. I think this change does make the game more consistent with other 3D Zeldas. The Zora mask complaint is also a little overblown, I do prefer the original too, but it isn't a massive part of the game, it just seems needless more than anything.
The main issue I have with Majora's Mask 3D is the tone and atmosphere of the game, which doesn't match the original. I don't know if the very muted and darker aesthetic in the original was 100% intentional. N64 games always had a less dynamic colour range than more modern releases, and this added to the atmosphere of this game, as well as OoT. Besides that, I don't love the changes to the Owl Statues, but I do think it's a massive improvement for the accessibility of this title.
So generally, it's a bit of a mixed bag for me. I do like this version, but it is not really better than the original, just different, and depending on preference I can see people preferring this one. It did make the game less tedious, but it lost something in the process.

If you don't have an issue with diving into more... unofficial methods,
I'd like to recommend using a certain mod with the 3D version instead.
As it'll give you the benefits of the 3D version while mixing in some of the stuff
from the N64 version, along with a bunch of QoL (Quality of Life) tweaks & bug fixes.
(Naturally it'd be a bit simpler to do so through an emulator, but this mod works on actual 3DS's too.)

@@ImperfectDark If that's the case you can find "that mod" here: ( restoration.zora.re/#setup ).
Also, since you're gonna try it through an emulator you can use the "HD-HUD" mod with it as well.
It's optional of course, so that's up to you. (You can find more info about it on that page I linked to.)
Something else to keep in mind: this mod created a bunch of button shortcuts,
so you won't need to rely on the Touch Screen as often. (Especially useful for emulators.)
For example, the Touch Buttons [I] and [II] can be used by pressing [ZR] + [X] and [ZR] + [Y] respectively.
You can also press [SELECT] for your Item menu and [ZR] + [SELECT] to bring up your Map. Just to name a few things.
I won't get _too_ specific here (since I don't know how much you really know about the game), but I'll say this...
Once you get to an "ocean area" and get the ability to more freely swim around, this mod gives you some more control over that.
As you can either _hold_ [ZR] to enter a more "mid-speed" swim for better control,
or you can _tap_ [ZL] to _toggle_ between "fast" and "mid" speed swimming.

For me, Skyward Sword is the only remaster I actively dislike when compared to the original version, and it's for one simple reason: the Joy-Con.
On the Wii, the Wii Remote and Nunchuck were ambidextrous controllers, so I could hold the Wii Remote in my left hand and still play the game perfectly without any issues. But on Switch, motion controls for Skyward Sword are tethered to the right Joy-Con with no option to use the left Joy-Con, and the design of the controllers makes it extremely uncomfortable to hold them in the opposite hands.
Because I'm left-handed and my level of coordination is drastically different between my hands, I straight-up couldn't play Skyward Sword HD properly. It felt ungainly and unnatural. I tried using the button controls, but you can really tell the game wasn't originally designed for it, and I actually like motion controls so it was much less enjoyable.
The left Joy-Con has all the same motion control capabilities as the right one, so the fact they didn't even give you the option to switch things around was a huge disappointment.
Twilight Princess was the best remaster in my opinion, largely because it felt exactly like what my memories of Twilight Princess were. Some people criticised it for that, but as you pointed out, it was actually a huge improvement. Memory is not a reliable thing, and is often more rosy than reality, so for them to make a faithful remaster that recreated what TP was in my mind rather than what it actually was is very impressive, and what I want out of remasters. I want to see the things I loved in the same way a younger me saw them, and that doesn't look out of place amongst modern games. TPHD nailed that the most, there was no real change in tone or atmosphere from the visuals, and nothing compelling about the gameplay was lost in translation as it blended the best of both old versions.

I never personally saw eye to eye (or mask to mask) with Majora's Mask despite how impressive the game was for the length of development time it had. And while the story of Skyward Sword is one of my favourites in the series (and quite clearly is going to impact the sequel/prequel to Breath of the Wild, it was sadly quite repetitive as a game. The rest of the list is my top three, hands down. Great video Jon, the site's going to miss you. ❤

It’s funny cause Majoras mask 3D was my first time playing the game, I never played it on the 64, and even though I knew about the changes I never had problem with it. So my guess is if you didn’t have that prior experience, MM3D would’ve been higher

You forgot to mention the big upgrade to the bombers notebook in majoras mask being a huge plus towards it

I wonder how good they could make graphics look nowadays if they made a game at 240p and 15fps on modern systems. Yeah it would be low res and slow but they could make the graphics ultra realistic with a huge polygon count

Skyward Sword has a ton of small changes. In terms of changes they all have had some noticeable work. They are all certainly easier to play in the remakes

Good video, I just can't agree with your definition of remasters vs. remakes. If it all comes down to the source code, that's a strange standard since it requires advanced knowledge of the development process and also kinda doesn't matter in the long run. Does anybody care that Link's Awakening doesn't contain the source code when it comes to classifying what kind of port it is? It's odd that it's missing from this list of remasters; you could've just called the list "remasters and remakes" and it would've been fine.

I want Wind Waker & Twilight Princess port to Switch. I played Ocarina of time 3D & Majora's mask 3D on 3DS, Skyward Sword HD on Switch last year. But couldn't get Wind Waker HD & Twilight Princess HD cuz I couldn't afford a Wii U back then
