How to Cast a Spinning Reel/Rod - For Beginners

  • In this video demonstration, I show you how to cast a spinning reel/rod. This is great for beginners or anyone who wants to perfect their cast, utilizing spinning tackle. Before learning how to cast, I recommend learning the fundamental terminology of the reel, such as the bail, drag dial, crank and gear ratio.
How to cast a baitcaster : • How to CAST a Baitcast...
The bail is what allows you to release line from the reel; it also oscillates evenly to add the line back to the reel.
The drag dial allows you to adjust drag tension.
The crank or handle is what you will turn to retrieve your line.
The reel gear ratio is what determines how fast the line is retrieved, higher gear ratios are faster.
Next you want to open the bail and place your index or trigger finger on the line like I showed in the demonstration. You then want to have 6-8 inches of line hanging from your rod tip to your lure. If it is much longer, your casting accuracy will suffer drastically. Point your rod at the intended target and pull the rod back or load the rod and cast in the direction of your target while releasing the line from your finger. If the lure shoot in the air, you released too soon, if it fly’s down by your feet you held on to long. Don’t worry, practice a little and you will get the hang of it in no time. If you enjoyed this video, please like, share and subscribe. Thank you!

I know I'm years late to this video, but I've never done fishing and I was out on the lake bc my dad said "go fishing" and handed ne the rod. I looked it up and this was the first video to pop up so I gave it a try. I CAUGHT MY FIRST FISH!!! OVER A FOOT LONG!!! I know it's not much but to me it was such an accomplishment. I didn't grow up with dad and he only paid attention to my brothers so when I told my friends I said "my CZcams dad taught me how!" 😅 it's cringey I'll admit it but I really was happy. Thank you so much for this video.

Your finger should never touch the string. The bail (as you mentioned it) is down when you open it. Your finger should be touching the edge of the spool to keep it from moving. You release your finger from the spool to control line feed, put you finger back on the spool to stop line feed, very similar to a bait casting reel. Your finger should never touch the line. Try this I think you will like it

My dad had a spinning reel when I was a kid. He would bring it with us, along with all the other rods, when we went fishing, but he rarely used it. When he did pull it out, inevitably bad words would come out of his mouth as he tugged at the backlash.
Us kids weren't allowed to use it, so the fancy reel acquired legendary status.
I bought one for myself today and had a devil of a time figuring it out, but I did.
Wished I had watched your video first though.
Like chess, I learned it in an afternoon, but will spend years mastering it.

Thanks for the tips. My dad gave me a new rod with a spinning reel, my first non-spin cast reel, about 9 years ago as a birthday present. Shortly after that Mom suddenly passed at 59 and then dad was diagnosed with cancer and passed at 62. Never got a chance to take the rod and reel out and learn his tips and have been staring at it hanging in the garage ever since... think I'm ready to take it out and give it a try.

I like to have two fingers in front and two fingers behind the reel, it feels the most comfortable for me. Another great how to video, keep them coming!

Thanks for the video. I'm learning and this definitely helps. My biggest issue is the line bundling up at the reel when I cast. Will try these techniques tomorrow

I'm fishing for near 30 years and today I've learned about roller cast - this isn't so popular in Europe and I think it should. It's amazing!

Thanks. I'm comfortable baitcasting and pretty accurate. All the moving parts on a new spinning outfit are a mystery. (a retirement gift). Camera showed position of bail b4 cast...great. Close bail manually...wow I thought you had to really crank to get it to shut. thnx again. 4 hours until sunset. I think I'll go fishin'.

Great video, and thanks for teaching the bit about not pinning the line against the rod, and instead just letting the line sit barely on your finger. That should help me get better casts.

Great tutorial! I am trying to learn to use a spinning reel. I grew up with push button and wanted to finally branch out. Your video showed me where I was doing some things wrong. For instance, I was holding the line too tight with my finger.

So my method I’m not sure if it’s usual or not but what I do is I flip the rail and I grab the line right above the reel pull it until I got it where I want it and I cast while letting go of the line I found that it allows me to get the most of the flex of that rod my thoughts are more flex will give you more distance
