How to Cast a Spinning Reel/Rod - For Beginners

- In this video demonstration, I show you how to cast a spinning reel/rod. This is great for beginners or anyone who wants to perfect their cast, utilizing spinning tackle. Before learning how to cast, I recommend learning the fundamental terminology of the reel, such as the bail, drag dial, crank and gear ratio.
How to cast a baitcaster : • How to CAST a Baitcast...
The bail is what allows you to release line from the reel; it also oscillates evenly to add the line back to the reel.
The drag dial allows you to adjust drag tension.
The crank or handle is what you will turn to retrieve your line.
The reel gear ratio is what determines how fast the line is retrieved, higher gear ratios are faster.
Next you want to open the bail and place your index or trigger finger on the line like I showed in the demonstration. You then want to have 6-8 inches of line hanging from your rod tip to your lure. If it is much longer, your casting accuracy will suffer drastically. Point your rod at the intended target and pull the rod back or load the rod and cast in the direction of your target while releasing the line from your finger. If the lure shoot in the air, you released too soon, if it fly’s down by your feet you held on to long. Don’t worry, practice a little and you will get the hang of it in no time. If you enjoyed this video, please like, share and subscribe. Thank you!

Thankful for the great effort 🤗
You didn't explain what you're doing with your index finger.
My grandfather recently passed, he left me his fishing equipment, never been fishing before but I’ve been missing him more then usual so I figured why not, he’d love it, thank you 😂
Was it fun😁
Sorry for your loss
Sorry for your loss he probably would’ve been so proud of you
I’m sure all he wants is a smile when you get your first fish 👍
Here for the same reason
You are a very good teacher not like other people who babble on for ages about stuff that doesn’t matter. You are straight to the point. Thanks for your help
Appreciate that buddy.

Thank you, my father died when I was at a young age and I didn't have anyone to help me learn to fish, so this helps alot
Haven't fished in 50 years and rearely with a spinning rod. This was an excellent video that helped orientate me to this new retirement activity.
Do you typically fly fish?
fishing for the first time soon! this will definitely help!
You will have a blast, thanks for watching!
Catch a goldfish
how was it im going for 8 hours soon im so scared never done it before any tips
I'm going for the first time in a year
I’m so glad I’m not the only one lol
Started fishing as a new hobby as I’ve started entering my 30’s and as a way to bond better with my dad. Thank you for this video showing how to do this.
That is awesome!
I know I'm years late to this video, but I've never done fishing and I was out on the lake bc my dad said "go fishing" and handed ne the rod. I looked it up and this was the first video to pop up so I gave it a try. I CAUGHT MY FIRST FISH!!! OVER A FOOT LONG!!! I know it's not much but to me it was such an accomplishment. I didn't grow up with dad and he only paid attention to my brothers so when I told my friends I said "my CZcams dad taught me how!" 😅 it's cringey I'll admit it but I really was happy. Thank you so much for this video.
same my first fish was a very small green sunfish i was so proud i wanted to cry wish you luck mate
CZcams is like a father that teaches there watchers stuff their actual dad didnt
Glad to fill the void son. 😂

So glad I found this video, been taking my daughter fishing since there’s no school and she bought a spinning reel today, could NOT figure it out ! Thanks for the Tutorial!!
Glad I could help!
Your finger should never touch the string. The bail (as you mentioned it) is down when you open it. Your finger should be touching the edge of the spool to keep it from moving. You release your finger from the spool to control line feed, put you finger back on the spool to stop line feed, very similar to a bait casting reel. Your finger should never touch the line. Try this I think you will like it

I’ve been fishing with a spinner for a very long time. Never watched a real tutorial. Learned some new things! I’m brushing up for my 2019 season. Cheers.
My whole life I've only used a closed face reel because that's what my dad taught me. Now I'm taking my son on a guided trip and the guide provides open face reels. I feel like a fool not knowing how to use an open face reel. This helped a lot and now we can practice before we go out. Thanks!!
My dad got me a new reel pole and line. And we’re gonna go fishing in a kayak and I’m very excited and this helped me a lot
Glad to hear bud, I hope you have a great time!
Happy fishing
How'd it go?
Your lucky man i wish my dad would do stuff with me
Minty Fresh damn
*sees this guy* Finally, a guy who looks like he can fish. I'll actually learn something.
Thanks bud, glad you liked it.
Thank you for the breakdown of EACH step and VISUALS. It seems so many experienced fishers mistakenly skips teaching/showing EVERY step out of habit. I totally get it. I appreciate you keeping that top of mind like a good teacher would. 👍🏾
My dad had a spinning reel when I was a kid. He would bring it with us, along with all the other rods, when we went fishing, but he rarely used it. When he did pull it out, inevitably bad words would come out of his mouth as he tugged at the backlash.
Us kids weren't allowed to use it, so the fancy reel acquired legendary status.
I bought one for myself today and had a devil of a time figuring it out, but I did.
Wished I had watched your video first though.
Like chess, I learned it in an afternoon, but will spend years mastering it.
This is exactly the video I needed. I used to fish a lot, but it’s been a LONG time. Now my son wants to learn and I needed help. Thanks.
Glad to help Jennifer, if you don't mind sharing the video perhaps it can help others. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks bud! Haven't been fishing since I was kid with my grandfather, this has helped me out a bit so I can go out with him again
Great video. Teaching 14 yr old daughter to bass fish. I’ve always been a bait-caster.... daughter, just a month in, is using spincast combos.... after a season of fishing with these I want to transition her to spinning reels..... I’ve never used one and this was very helpful
Glad to help, good luck out there. 🎣
Hi Josh, I'm 67 and have been Fishing in Michigan for 60 of hose years and also made some trips to Colorado and even spent 9 days fishing for Kings, Silvers and Pink Salmon in Alaska, but never knew exactly how I was supposed to cast a Spinning reel or that there were 3 different techniques to do it.
Can't wait to go fishing and try each of them this Spring. Thanks for the excellent teaching and just subscribed to your channel.👏
Thanks for watching and good luck on your next fishing trip.
Thumbs up ! Woke up this morning and decided to go fishing, but haven't been in 10+ years. Got to the water and couldn't remember how to use to reel. I'm good to go now.
Glad to help John
Thanks buddy! I used to fish as a child and I’m trying to get back into it. Im heading to The Yucatan soon and going to try some shore fishing in a small fishing town.
Thanks for the refresh course. Great video!
Thank you for showing 3 methods of casting. Have been struggling with over hand and thought the side cast was incorrect as someone mentioned over hand is correct method. Glad I can practice over hand and enjoy what I already know. Appreciated!
This was a perfect demo. Have not cast a reel in years. I got a new spin reel and just needed a refresher. Thanks for this, can't wait to get back on the water!
Joshua this exactly why I watch your channel. I like the educational stuff even if it's something I already know it's great to have something confirmed. Thank you.
I appreciate that, sometimes we can still pickup small tricks that can really help increase our angling abilities.
Man your video was so helpful. I’m a beginner with these reels and your video has helped me out a lot. Thanks !!!
Thanks. I’m going to get my four kids started fishing but I haven’t been in 20 yrs myself. Thank goodness for CZcams.
Glad to help.
I've not gone fishing with a rod/reel for almost 38 years. I clean FORGOT how to cast (not that i was ever any good at it). Your short video was CLEAR, CONCISE and I easily absorbed it. Thank you for teaching me.
Chris
Excellent breakdown; all the info a beginner needs, nothing extraneous, delivered clearly and concisely. I'm coming back to fishing after many years away, and your videos have been a great help!
Glad it was helpful!
Just started fishing the other day, never knew how to fish or do anything like that, but your videos been helping me a lot. Keep it up man 👍🏼
Thanks for the video. It had been years since I used a spinning reel, as I’ve just been using baitcasting exclusively. I was making the mistake of holding the line all the way against the rod to cast. This will definitely help.
Yes sir, just let the line sit on the finger. You got this!
ive just recently got into fishing and I've been having so much trouble casting and it never dawned on me to watch these videos 3 fishing trips to big bear and 1in salt water, all casting disasters couldnt get it out at all kind of started buming me out. but i will definitely be practising this more often... thanks alot for this.
Nice. I've been fishing for almost 40 years and am now trying to teach my 5 year old son how to troll and cast with an open reel. He caught his first northern Pike today with a big red and white spoon. I'll have to show him this video as he was having a bit of trouble figuring out how to operate the open spool.
Helped out a bunch! Teaching my 5 year old how to cast. We both enjoyed the visual aid
Thanks bro I went to the field today to practice and it felt great! I've been fishing for about a year with a couple months off and this really helped get my groove back!
Taking my older kids out for the first time soon, and this will be my first time doing it on my own. I've went with people before that insisted on controlling everything and refusing to let me learn hands on for myself, so this helps sooo much!
Been over 40 years since I have fished just getting into it again. Bought an inexpensive ugly stick with a Shakesphere spinning reel it is different than the old Mitchell 300 I remember. Thank you for a nice refresher on casting for an old new beginner.
Glad to help and welcome back!
Thanks for the tips. Friend convinced me to go fishing recently and I am loving it.
Thanks, it's always good to review the basics.
Thanks for watching Mike, I just want to cater to both the beginner and experience anglers.
Thank you for your informative video. I know absolutely nothing about fishing. I've watched videos from other guys but they assume the whole world knows how to use a reel. I plan to watch all of your videos over and over.
I had to practice casting yesterday as I have not been fishing since I was 15 and this was helpful. Will implement these tips next time I hit the lake. Thank you!
I just purchased a spinning reel. This is the video I was looking for. Your instructions are very clear. I am left handed and have to adapt but that is not a problem. I found that holding the reel between my two middle fingers works best for me as well. Thank you for making this video. I really appreciate it.
You're welcome, I try and be as clear as possible so I cater to the new and experienced anglers. Thanks for watching.
U can switch the handle to the other side of the rod. Im left handed too.
3 different ways to cast? I didn’t know that. I’m gonna surf fish So Cal for the first time in 2019. Thank you for the useful information Joshua.
I'm 13 wanting to go fish with my dad. This was very helpful .
My wife and I are at Walmart picking out fishing poles and this was a great demonstration on this type of fishing pole for us to figure out which one we want thank you.

Thanks Rodney, glad to help.
Thanks for sharing video definitely helpful for beginners.👍👍
Just picked up a spinning setup after years of only bait caster only. I had never even casted or held a spinning setup until now and these tips are nice for a quick start up with this new combo to get adjusted to it.

I've been fishing over 40 years and I just found out a few ways to cast which I think will benefit me on my next fishing trip. thanks for the tip, looks like you can teach an old dog new tricks so thank you for this video.
Glad to assist bud, we can always learn something new. 👍
Thanks Josh from Captain Rich, sailing Captain with minimum fishing experience. Going up to Bishop CA this week to put your advice into practice!
Good luck Captain, stay safe out there.
Very informative. I just getting back into fishing and seem to have forgotten how to cast a spinning reel.
I'm in the same boat, this shows me how to do something I thought I knew.
Equipment has changed in 55 years.
Finally upgraded to a spin caster. Thought I knew how to use one but apparently not. Thanks for the video! Simple and easy to follow without a bunch of BS.
Wow, great video! And presented by a man that is easy on the eyes! Thank you!
Going to try and catch some channel cats again tomorrow after not fishing for a few years, thanks for helping me make sure I remember what I'm doing hahaha. You give great tips and tricks I wouldn't have known otherwise too!
Very informative. I need to learn that roll cast to get under the mangroves. Keep em coming!!
Thanks Big O, the roll cast is deadly for skipping and low cast.

Thank u Joshua for the info , realy appreciate it ....
Got my son (Joshua as well) a rod today. He was having trouble getting it cast. Then we watched this video and it works like a charm
Glad to help Juan, great name. ;)
This really helped me, I was holding the line all the way and was wondering why it wasn't that accurate.
i was in search of a video like this, thank you it helped me a lot as a begginer
This is the best demonstration on the fact you show how the line goes through the guide. Every other video doesn't show that! Great video.
Just bought a reel today.I looked at several other videos and yours gave the most in lesson. THANKS
Tnx god for this video, you're amazing and you helped me a lot💕💕
Very nice and good explanation thanks ...
Thank you. Very helpful video. I looked up a lot of other videos before I bumped into this one but none of them provided the details I was looking for as a novice angler. Great tips and tricks. Thanks!
Your comments are very helpful in assisting me to do an overhead cast and how
To control the reel. hanks.
Thanks for the helpful tips on casting with a spinning rod.Got a mid- size combo I picked up at Walmart a few years ago.Works beautifully caught all kinds of fish on it from shore, was just never realy all that great at casting.I think your tips on casting should realy help up my game. Thanks again.😊👍🏻
Thank you. The whole procedure seems basic, but good technique is so important.
You are absolutely correct.
I am a newbie, and this is the best advice ever!
Thanks for the tips. My dad gave me a new rod with a spinning reel, my first non-spin cast reel, about 9 years ago as a birthday present. Shortly after that Mom suddenly passed at 59 and then dad was diagnosed with cancer and passed at 62. Never got a chance to take the rod and reel out and learn his tips and have been staring at it hanging in the garage ever since... think I'm ready to take it out and give it a try.
I like to have two fingers in front and two fingers behind the reel, it feels the most comfortable for me. Another great how to video, keep them coming!
Thank you Stephanie for the comment.
Great website.
Thanks for the video. I'm learning and this definitely helps. My biggest issue is the line bundling up at the reel when I cast. Will try these techniques tomorrow
This is my issue too
I'm fishing for near 30 years and today I've learned about roller cast - this isn't so popular in Europe and I think it should. It's amazing!
Thanks. I'm comfortable baitcasting and pretty accurate. All the moving parts on a new spinning outfit are a mystery. (a retirement gift). Camera showed position of bail b4 cast...great. Close bail manually...wow I thought you had to really crank to get it to shut. thnx again. 4 hours until sunset. I think I'll go fishin'.
Great video, and thanks for teaching the bit about not pinning the line against the rod, and instead just letting the line sit barely on your finger. That should help me get better casts.
Helped me out today. Thanks.
Glad to help!
Best video I have found for beginner casters, nicely done. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Josh, that was an excellent video!
Going fishing tomorrow and i had no idea how to cast or reel in (dont know if i said that correctly) but this video helped me so much thank you
Glad to have helped, thanks for the comment.
Wow thanks for the tip about closing the bail manually. I always used the handle and started retrieving my bait

Thanks for helping me cast my rod
@Joshua Taylor, I'm new to the Baitcaster and even though I've played around with my timing, my cast ALWAYS go hard rt on me ! Help please
So my method I’m not sure if it’s usual or not but what I do is I flip the rail and I grab the line right above the reel pull it until I got it where I want it and I cast while letting go of the line I found that it allows me to get the most of the flex of that rod my thoughts are more flex will give you more distance
