I'm 47 and I've never played hockey, probably watched less than a dozen games in my life. I started skating with my 5 year old in December and he just qual'ed for 8u majors, 'lil stinker is a natural skater. He skates circles around me, backwards, mohawks... Being a semi-retired dad, I've got the time to spend with him and reffing could get me up to speed on the game and off-set the not inconsiderable cost of his skater/player development under the umbrella of our emerging NHL franchise development program. Engineering development, even fly-by-night, is slow compared to a hockey game, but I'm sure I can keep up. Thanks for the inspiration!

@@beginneradulthockey it was definitely hard the players were older than me but I had a better game the second time around cause it was 10 year olds playing but I love it

@@Dinonuggiegirl It definitely is really intimidating when the players are older than you - but unless they're jerks, they should be really supportive to see you out there. I hope you stick with it! It IS really difficult but also really fun!

Hi Jaclyn, I ref in the westchester county NY chapter. Nice to see a female interested and participating in reffing ice hockey. I enjoyed this presentation. One update. The part you mentioned about the shin tights. They play a dual role. They, as you mentioned, do secure your shin pads. But also if worn over the back of your tendon guard on your skates they stop your pants from falling between your leg and tendon guard. So your pants are always outside your skates. Keep up the good work and good luck. Always aspire to raise your level. Lou

It can get very overwhelming! At least it's less expensive than hockey gear.

For laces look up derby laces! They are my favorite waxed laces.

Congratulations on becoming a ref. I've always thought about reffing too. How do you get started in it? Thanks

I asked around to some people I know who are also refs, and got the courage to sign up for the seminar. I say go for it! It’s fun and makes you a better hockey player too.
