Giant Sequoias were indeed native to the Great Basin >10 million years ago, before the Great Basin was really a basin, and probably survived the extensional collapse that turned highlands into the Great Basin too, especially if sequoias are thriving there today- probably only extirpated due to the onset of periodic ice ages ~2mya. Very cool to learn about this tree!

Loved this adventure Rudy, we are fortunate to live about three hours away from the Avenue of Giants Coastal Redwoods in Northern CA, and about two hours away from the inland Sequoia Redwoods down in Calaveras County, The inland redwoods frow fatter around and tall, the coastal grow extremely tall and big around. They are truly awesome to see, they're not just a tree. Plan a trip sometime, my faves are the coastal, plus the ocean is right there. Lots of scenery and fun things to do too.

There is one down the street from me now in Washington, that was cut down in the 80's and the base is 8' wide....EPIC!!!
