The scene from the manga is even much more emotional with Goku saying 'I want to see you up close,since you've grown up now' with Goku hugging him back...shows how much Goku has been missing on his son(s) and how he actually wants to be the best father he can.

He is naive,that is the problem,too pure and good-hearted.....he would sometimes prefer saving/spending time with birds and innocent people rather than saving his own spawn.
Goku is more like a big brother to gohan than a real father.. Goku totally lacks the emotional maturity to actually be a father so he always just can be the best guardian he can.

There’s just no comparing Super to Z. This scene alone has more emotion than the entire Super story line, and all that happened was a hug and a change of clothes. God Z was truly a great damn show.

Michael Ericson Yeah, that was pretty sad and lame. They made Gohan awesome again in the Buu Saga but he was humiliated in the Golden Frieza Saga. I’m glad that he’s been redeemed in the Tournament of Power Saga, he kicked tons of ass!

I think scenes like this are enhanced for people who have lost someone in their life. Being able to truly feel what's going on in the moment. Anime has a great way of bringing out emotions.
I seriously don't get why everyone hates on Goku as a dad. The only time he wasn't around for Gohan other than being dead was he spent a year and a half learning instant transmission which saved their lives a lot.Sometimes a military dad can b away for a year because they're training for war. Plus, he was with Gohan for the first four years of his life and trained with him for four years in the cell saga.

I cannot for the life of me appreciate Dragon Ball Kai for rushing through emotional scenes like this. They don't let us take it all in and appreciate the relationship that Goku and Gohan shared together as father and son. They don't give the new viewers time to cry. They just go "Okay pick up and get to the action!"

This final fight between Gohan and Buu could've been the be-all and end-all. It would've been the perfect conclusion to this arc IMO. Sure, we wouldn't have gotten Kid Buu, or Vegito, but I still would've liked it if the series ended with Gohan reclaiming his place as the world's strongest/Earth's new protector. I'm happy with how the series ended, but I still miss the Gohan that we have been watching grow and get stronger since the beginning of the series.

Buu saga is kinda screwed because like you need the whole kid buu thing cause vegetas character developement and how he accepting goku is better than him. But then you dont get to see gohan carry the torch and defeat buu. And also vegeta was willing to fuse bodies with goku permanantly to defeat buuhan because of bulma and trunks but we wouldnt have got that if gohan won. Its kinda a win lose scenario for either case.

I'll never understand why they changed this scene in the anime from the manga. They went out of their way to make sure Goku didn't hug back, even though he did in the manga. He might not be the best Father but he's not a dick. He would still hug his fucking son to say goodbye. So stupid.

Why not, they saw Goku for the first time after 7 years, only for a day. Gohan was believed to be dead so Goku mourned him, found Gohan after finding out he wasn't dead, Goku's time was up so he couldn't go back to Earth so this was believed by both characters at the time that this would be their last time seeing each other.

Also, he said to Piccolo that he didn't wanted that everyone trusted everything to him, and with Buu alive, he needs to train everyone in the fastest way possible.
Goku did hug back though. He was just overwhelmed by having to say goodbye to his son + knowing Gohan needed to go fight Buu, right then and there.
One thing I don't see mentioned much is how supportive Kibito is to Gohan, he's being very much the supportive mentor for him, not so much as a fighter, but by simply being supportive and encouraging.
This scene is enough to make a grown man cry😭
This scene is truly fascinating to no end and the background music makes the scene even more eternal and makes me wish that it continued for longer.

Yeah I'm watching Z rn and it's so much more enjoyable than Super. Honestly Toei and Toriyama have fallen low these past 10 or so years. The quality of their anime in the 90s and 2000s is so much better than most of Super. The only exception might be the art in the Tournament of Power, but the Buu Saga is probably better overall in both art and animation. Plus the fights in super suck unless it's one of the big fights, while in Z even the smaller fights, like the freaking 3 namekians vs Frieza, were epic.
Ritz Tan exactly man. There are some exceptional episodes in the tournament of power but overall i dont enjoy the story, the fights, and characters. They said that the show was rushed from the start so thats why they fucked it up. Man i get mad cause Dragon ball is not an anime you want to rush . I havent read the Super mangas but maybe its good or it add something to the story

The reason that Gohan chose Piccolo's outfit for the Cell Games was because he was trained by Piccolo, where as Goku's clothes usually had a symbol on the back of who he most recently trained under. King Kai and Master Roshi are the two main ones that come to mind, neither of which Gohan learned under.

Mine is future trunks and teen gohan to mystic gohan and from here to the part where he Trains with goku and tien or thinshinhan so it was piccolo and mystic Gohan vs Goku and Tien
It’s easy to forget what makes this scene so good - at this point Gohan realises he is never going to see his father again, so he requests to fight in the same clothing as him. Gohan’s character arc is now complete - he has fulfilled his destiny by replacing Goku as protector of the Earth.
I wish that was the case sadly...

I wont lie. Seeing gohan as a fully grown man taking his fathers clothes. Almost like receiving goku's torch as the new saviour of earth. To take the place he took 17 years in the future. With the difference being that he was going to win. It was pretty emotional. Too bad it all went down the drain
The scene gave us false hope that we will see a reenactment of the Cell Saga. But Gohan was not even present in the final fight. THEY DECEIVED US!
Sean said that this part was actually where he and Kyle Herbert (Gohan) did the scene a bit different. Sean made the choice to have Goku's lines more emotional like, choked up voice. I think what he was trying to say was, when we see Gohan hug Goku and we just see his face, that would be when Goku would be speaking to him, if that makes sense.
