Keening is a form of ancient Gaelic vocal lament widely practiced in Ireland and the Gaelic parts of Scotland until the eighteenth century. Gaelic mourning ceremonies once took place according to set customs, involving two sets of mourners and specific types of music played by mourners and bards. The keening song, or ullaloo, was just one of these forms musical forms. In more recent centuries in Ireland and Scotland, individual paid mourners would weep, recite verses and sing keening songs.
This recording may be the only authentic example of a keening song passed down in the oral tradition in Ireland. The recording was made in 1951 by Alan Lomax - you can hear his other recordings of Kitty Gallagher here: archive.culturalequity.org/ta...
