Wonderful video thanks Dr.. my Neuro Physio pushes me every week in therapy to recover. I'm 5 years post stroke. I jog on the spot for 5 minutes over 3 times a day for cardio. Then I do hand exercises every second day . Knowing my limits and raising the bar has worked wonders for me. We change my rehab program around to challenge myself to encourage neuroplasticity. Regards from Australia. 🇦🇺

Doorknobs of locked and dead bolted door make excellent handholds for stationary exercises.
Handicap ramps and shopping cart racks make excellent "gyms" for walking and leg stretching exercises. Handicap ramps usually have stairs nearby as an exercise bonus challenge.

Yep. Right leg got stronger than ever. Left slowly......improving. Over the course of one year and two months. I should sleep on the floor to engage muscles and fix left leg quick. But floor is cold for now.
I can't do activities as they lead me to epilepsy. But I have a window I can act a bit. Keto diet enables more mental clarity. Etc.

Hi Dr, first of all, thank you for providing all these useful information. I'm from Malaysia and recently just moved to Canada. My mom had a massive stroke on Mother's day 2019 which caused her to be hemiplegia on the right side. Last month, she was able to lift her affected leg where her PT told us that she can't lift that leg anymore or EVER!
Our next goal for her is to get her affected arm/shoulder to move but then it's flaccid in the morning but it flexes every night (where her arm internally rotates). She also has minor subluxation. Her PT also told us that we shouldn't even bother working on the affected arm because the functions will not come back but the weird thing is that it does have some reflexes and she can feel me touching her arm and shoulder and even her palm! Do you think we should keep working the arm/shoulder to get the movements back?
What I love about this video is the encouragement and hopefulness that you give to not only those who suffered from stroke but also to those who are taking care of their loved ones that had stroke. Please continue to make more videos like this. God bless you!

  • @societablyoffkilterthankfu6302

Thank you so much for all the positive word. I have had a severe head injury and stroke in the first 6 months and the surgery on my brain. I have been fighting and standing within the first few months and now as well but with walking and trying to keep all this going with the exercise and words cause it has affected my left brain and right side as well.
It is so hard and difficult looking at it but it’s so worth it for all the hard work. It’s a struggle but I have to see it is worth it in the long run, I am sure it is a slow and steady process…

Doctor T. what is in your therapy practice, the percentage of people who have managed to get better by exercising. The words like "might be" or "can be" are things that i can't hear. I try to not compensate any thing to my walking with my brother or my wife. As Matt Bishop said "YES! You can recover. Get on your feet and get walking immediately. Do not sit in the hospital bed or ride in a wheelchair. Use a walker if you have to but get on your feet immediately." . I am trying every day to work on my disabilities, seven days, in the hope that i can walk again. That is my goal.

A good plan is very important in the rehabilitation process. But it should also be understood that it is a living organism, so it adapts to our knowledge and reactions of the body. I think that the frame is something that needs to be adhered to, and the details adjusted to the everyday situation. I started from the end, as the maximum possible progress, so I focused on walking, now I am perfecting the details as much as possible. For the recovery of the hand, I started from the big joints more intensely, the shoulder, the elbow to the fingers. In the short term, the goal is 1% better. It is definitely the best help I can get, thank you very much, God bless you.

Please use functional electrical stimulation machine for hand and fingers. Its reasonably priced and will get your hand moving. For arm, start with elbow immobilizer and work toward fingers. Arm recovery is from proximal, shoulder to fingers. It's a long process. Just dont get discouraged. I'm speaking from experience. Exercises you wanna do is, PNF, D1 an D2. Plus many more. But this is the start.

This is an excellent question! I am not a pediatric specialist, but I think that jumping on a trampoline might increase spasticity. That being said, kids need to be kids and sometimes it is good to look at the big picture. If this brings your child joy, that needs to be considered. Generally speaking, it would be beneficial to have ankle braces to minimize the severity of the spasticity. I hope this helps!

Hey dr. T. You summed up whole recovery in few minutes. Please do more videos on recovery 4 to 5th stage of brunnstorm recovery. Basically fine tuning the movements. Do you have out of town patients? I'd love to come and get assessed to finalize my recovery. Maybe after this pandemic, I will visit orlando. Currently, cross border travel from canada is not permitted.

Thanks for the question! Do you meant that once he is sitting, he can not lift it into the care? I assume this is the passenger side. Is it right or left leg involvement?

Thank you Dr. Tobias for all your wonderful insight and information. I know your channel is more for stroke patients, but I love your approach. I have PPMS, I am still mobile with a walker but a majority of my day is sitting due to my job. How often/how long to you recommend standing during the day and how effective is tall kneeling vs standing?

    • @rehabhqofficial
      @rehabhqofficial  Před 3 lety +2

Hi! I am so glad to see more people in this community with MS. I plan to start addressing more issues related to MS this year. 😊 That being said, standing is critical while also taking into consideration fatigue. If you work a traditional 8 hr/day desk job, I would invest in a standing desk and experiment with how much you can stand (again taking into consideration fatigue). As far as tall kneeling, LOVE THIS! It is great to isolated/strengthen the hips.

The motivation is hard to get going after a stroke. It took me some time to accept what happened and start pushing myself again. Once you start seeing some improvements it will change. God bless.

Yes, they have very similar courses (MS and stroke). If you have MS, it would apply more to "0-6 months following an acute exacerbation). I hope that helps!
