I'd gladly take any of the C2 vetts over the modern day versions... Hands down!
Me too. I'd take your C2 in a heartbeat.
The old one is 100 times prettier .
AND...there's that built in "mystique" that just won't ever go away.
sadly will be banned from 2030 on :-((
Come on man lol
Yep, hiring Carlos may be the best move Edmunds ever made. Good job.
Adam Haught Carlos bitch slap the editor who gave you a 12.2 @ 104mph they are already trying to make you look bad!
BimmerM5e39 Well, it is an Auto...
Owned a 67 coupe, 327 350 hp. My dad and I pulled the motor in 1972 for a rebuild and she was pushing just over 400 hp when we were done. That car was a monster and with new rubber she handled pretty good. Never ran her hard that much....back then you just cruised and got the looks. Today I don’t really pay much attention to the new vettes. Got married and found we couldn’t fit a baby carriage in the back so it had to go. I’m 68 and wish I could afford to buy another today but, at least I’ve got my memories.
Nice 👌
Yep, had the same one, 327/350, lots of fun....wish I still had it!!!
The C2 will remain one of the most beautiful cars ever made.
I had a new '66 roadster... with the 350 HP V8 , 4-speed and positraction. I loved it dearly.
A friend of mine's old brother did too. It was silver/black interior convertible w/ a 4 speed. Incredibly fast.
I prefer the old-school Corvettes, they’re more fun to drive. I have a 1967 L79 Coupe and I love driving it. Love those factory side pipes!
65 L79 Roadster here
😊
Its great to see Motortrends Carlos getting around. He's grown and proven himself to be a quality automotive presenter. His passion is genuine, his presenter charisma is on point, and its just a joy to see any video he's apart of.
The difference between a 1966 Corvette and a 2015 Corvette is that I don't have to look at the badging on the 1966 to know it's a Corvette. The 1966 looks like nothing else. The 2015 looks like everything else.
Right. There's just a mystique or aura around the C2 that screams Americana and is forever burned into every car lover's consciousness.
David Broughall no it's also distinct.
It’s like an American Ferrari F12
black and red 1967 corvette with a 427 fast back is my all time dream car. so sexy for its time and the styling more than holds up.
I had the same '66 for several years in the late '70s until the early '80s...LOVED That car, wish I had it back...
There were several engine sizes available for the '66 corvette and the 327/300 hp was the smallest. A '66 vette with a 327/350 hp would have been a more reasonable comparison.
ky le agreed
Yeah and i believe the biggest one on that era was the 427(back than the 454 wasn't been developed yet until the 1970s i think) that put out almost 500hp(i believe)
I'll take the 66.
great vid. cracking up at that keep belt. I hated them when I was young. never felt safe
Listen, my late Dad bought a brand new 66' with 327/350, 4 spd and 3.36 and ran a 14.2@100 mph at Detroit Dragway, so I call total BS on 16.0@83 mph, a 78' Vette ran 15.7 @88 mph, no F'n way in hell!
A base engine on poor tune, surely
My dad has a 1966 Corvette stingray hard top convertible fully restored. It such a beautiful machine.
When parked ANYWHERE together, NOONE is giving the new one a 2nd look, not even close and not even an opinion either🗯
The boomers do, and I do, but they're both still bang-up sweet! And so is the new C8! ♡♡♡
@Jerry Olson hey Jerry, how about how it looks🤔
@Jerry Olson your kidding, right 🙄
To illustrate how far apart they are, timewise, subtract 50 years from a 66 vette. You'd have a face-off between a 66 vette and 1916 mercer speedster, which topped out at about 80 mph.
Edmunds if you create more videos like this you will have much much more views. It felt like the old Ignition Show. Good job Carlos
Carlos is BACK! :)
Of course it didn’t have a split window! It’s a freaking ‘66!
This is what would happen if Head2head had babies with Ignition... And then gets adopted by Edmunds.
I don't care if the new one is better. That 66 is a beautiful piece of engineering.
Carlos in the morning! Best move ever
I would love to see the old vette on some modern rubber as wide as possible just to see how far they really are.
I agree
It still looks like it would handle like an old Volvo sedan ;-)
Probably do 1:35-36 with Randy P drivin..1:38-39 with this driver.
you cant tell how it would handle with 10 inch tall sidewalls
I'd like to see the new car with the old style bias ply tires.
Yeah, this guy & his driving revived this channel...
Cleary, that was a typo. Probably should read 114 . . .
Oops. Wrong thread . . .
awesome video
There you are Carlos! Lol I heard you left and I was really sad lol
66 for me, no brainer, its not that I don't like the new Vette, its just not for me. Back in the day the Vettes handling on a smooth track was said to only be bettered by a mid engined exotic. that chassis ran from 63 until 82, almost unchanged, put radials on it and it would be a lot better, and maybe a driver who isn't used to all the driver aids that the new one has......
104 in the 1/4??? That’s what my 300 horsepower 1994 Corvette ran bone stock so that must be a typo must have meant 114 but even that low it’s more like 117-118
Maybe it trapped only 114 because it's a non-Z51 car without the NPP exhaust . . .
carlos.... you should just upload onto your own channel you could blow up so fast, i mean look at what chris Harris did, and it worked out great.
justin bouche Chris Harris is a professional driver.
Luis Medina not exactly, hes experienced much like carlos.
justin bouche He does have his own channel and uploads videos on it
Lolman240 ik, thats why i said "you should just upload onto your own channel"
I think that Carlos should have his own channel. But first he should help edmunds. If he can make this channel shine, I'm sure he will do great on his own.
And on this episode of Edmunds, Carlos THRASHES a 1966 Corvette and the tires screech and squeal NO MAS! :D
I agree Carlos will make this channel!
As far as bhp and torque, they should've used a '66 L79 to have a more balanced comparison. I understand the L79 wasn't the basic model, but in '66 the ratings were gross, not net; therefore, realistically, an L79 is transmitting around 270 at the tires whereas the car in this video is probably around 220. Just my opinion, of course.
Nice to see someone actually driving a C2 like that.
Nice review. However, I would have preferred that the 66 had radials instead of bias ply. I remember a Car and Driver magazine from 1982 where they tested a 62 Vette with radial tires and a professional drive and got .78 on the skidpad. It had some useful upgrades like an alternator and I believe electronic ignition. Either way the 66 would not keep up with the new one. A shame GM didn't continue that design for a couple more years.
Yeah
.id take the 66 vette any day but a 275.hp 327 is not fair racing. My cousin had a 68 camaro with a 375.327 and it would smoke.his shorts at 7k.
Modernize the 66, I have seen guys run a complete C-6 or C-7 engine and drivetrain and brake set up under their 63-67's. That way you have the best of both worlds. Looks with the old C2 and performance and handling with the c6 parts.
So are you driving the 66 in a continuous circle while speaking or is the alignment THAT BAD? (Yes, getting the steering wheel straight is part of a proper alignment)
The '15 would be more fun on the track like that and better for driving cross-country, but it will never turn heads or get the nods of approval like the '66 will.
I know like 99% of the comments will be "1966 version, no contest" and I get that. It's a beautiful, classic car, with a rawness and car-driver dynamic you just don't get with newer cars. Plus it will only go up in value, while the new one will drop off a cliff in resale value. But given a real-world choice, I bet about half of those people would take the new one. Way faster, way more practical, plenty of creature comforts...and it's still a 'vette.
Give me the 66 any day.
First step, get a rock solid and well liked presenter, CHECK! Second step, get better background music. TF
Old is gold. Cars can always be made to go faster. But you can't change the looks. Plus, it sounds like the C2 has a purer more rewarding driving experience.
I'm pretty sure you can indeed change the looks...
that shift delay on the c7 lol
Corvette is my official favorite manufacturer. 🌟
66 all day. I mean that car is Beautiful...
That's it. I am selling my 67 small block and getting a 2015 base. Does it have cup holders??
Love the c2
The ‘67 @ 16 sec. Quarter mile, it needs work, they were faster when new.
at 1:56 did any one notice how close he got to the cone? literally inches,
I was waiting for Randy's laptimes
Hey, how about do the same test but put the same 1966 bias ply tires on the new Corvette and see what happens.
And in 1966, 100+ octane leaded fuel was pretty easily available.
I rather have the older version
Randy. P was faster than 1:27 in slow old Astons. and Jag F types. Justin Bell is nearly as fast you could get him for laps.😎
Guess which one will lose value and which will gain in value.
My grandpa has a ‘66 Corvette same specs
We have the same one 👍👍
I’ll take the new Corvette if you put the 66’s body on it lol
they should do a video like this with the suburban
I would rather have the 1966 Corvette...
Its classic, looks good, stands out more, and have way better presence
the new corvettes are everywhere they are no where near rare and its damn sure does not have the same presence as others competitors and way over rated but older models do and so do old muscles cars..the new so called muscle cars are a joke
My brother In law has the new corvetteZ06 and it's definitely not a joke. You're just salty af
+GokuThe Saiyan I don't really care about how other people see me in MY car. If there were a million 1966's I'd still think its cooler. It just feels like the car for me. That one's got one of my favorite little engines under that huge hood, the 327 chevy. I'd take the good with the bad on the old timeless classic. I wouldn't be afraid to modify it one bit either. I feel like that was mandatory for the 50's and 60's
hussein335 and yet won't never ever ever look at good as the original.
Just don't fuck up the classic body by cutting out larger wheel wells or modifying it in any way. ***It need NOTHING. No "improvements" or modifications necessary. There oughta' be something akin to a religious crime against any of that. Just ask any purist.
The C2 would have done tremendously better with some wider tires.
old 66 is a better looking car hands down!!!
Modern tires would help a lot
I'd take the '66 Corvette over the new one; no question about it. The C2 has distinctive, handsome styling inside and out, and it looks like it's infinitely more fun to drive, which is what a production sports car should be all about in the first place. Performance isn't everything.
Real V8 engine in the '66 Vs electric vacuum cleaner motor in the '15.
What? It's still a very real V8.
My favorite Corvette prior to the new one is the 1967 427. I am the former owner of a 1975 L48 which was the first year for the highly restrictive single catalytic converter and the second year for the extremely heavy crash bumpers. Nostalgia is fine but do not let it separate you from reality to point of making you stupid. Anybody that says the new corvette is junk in anyway needs their brain replaced. I watched the new Corvette humiliate the old 1966 in every catagory in this video and there are still people who think the 1966 is better than the 2015, thats just plain stupid. Automotive engineering has advanced by leaps and bounds the past 50 years to the point where a 2015 Camry V6 destroyed the 1966 Corvette in every catagory and did it with no stress or strain. The Camry V6 is a 21st century family grocery getter with some performance to it, the 1966 Corvette was a prestigious top of the line high performance sports car in its day. Family cars of the 21st century will humiliate the high performance cars of the 20th century all day long with air conditioning cooling, high tech stereo blasting and heated seats warming your buns all day long, that is what 50 years of research and development has done to the passenger car of today.
I will bet you 1 million dollars if a 66 427 vette went heads up with a v6 Camry the 50 year old big block would drag its ass
Why did a Carlos leave motor trend?
They made Kevin Spacey the new Editor.
How come the motortrend guy move to Edmunds....???
Love my 66
None of the electronics on the new corvette will be working 50 years from now, it's plastic junk. Old vette ftw.
fuck YESS
Pretty dumb claim.
in a nutshell the performance got better as the car got uglier! like the old saying cheer up things could be worse so I cheered up and 50 years later things got worse. I'd choose the 66 any day of the week.
I saw a new stingray going for 43k, do you think I can get a 66 vette for less? Lol
Largos!
I want both 😂
104 trap speed seems low
I'm sure it's a typo. Was prolly supposed to be 114 . . .
Grandpa corvette: I still got this
Grandchild corvette: weeeeeeeeeeeeee
que el no estaba en MotorTrend ¡??
the c7 is just awesome !
I think C7s are sex on wheels. But they can't hold a candle to my '66 coupe for sexiness. Old car fast is different. For one thing, you can blow the engine up and/or swap ends in no time flat by making a mistake. Risk is sexy.
Wow, that's a lot of lag between when you pull the shift paddle and the thing finally gets around to shifting. And that's in track mode? Pathetic.
I'd take the 66 over any of today's car!
Same my grandapa owns one and I'm think I have a chance of getting it
Hands down the 66 is sooo.....cool
CtjHaze NEVER give it away and I would start doing research about engines and maintenance
You took the words right out of my mouth. There's something about the C2 that's seared into my brain that just won't ever leave. I don't know what or why, but the C2 to me was always the ultimate 'Vette.
Dale Andrews the C2 is basically the Sean Connery of James Bond. Everyone knows he’s the “true” James Bond.
God, that music, so cheesy... how about something more active that is more engaging or that gives the feel of the car? or no music at all, food for thought. Great host! The editing needs to be a bit more careful. You're headed on the right direction!
Thats a pretty tame mid year...
104mph in the 1/4? You mean 114mph? It should be around 118 or so. Editors need to wake up.
66 > 15
Compare a 53 to the 66
I'd take the '66 any day of the week...
wow 50 years and it gained 150hp nice ......
KingStivan Magnetic suspension ride. and 4 seconds off the 1/4 mile. I'm in. not the most expensive model either.
Luis Medina much like a amg wagon ...
which model?
Gained more Luke 200 net hp. The 66 300 (gross hp), with a typical 15% drivetrain loss, has about 255 hp net. The 2015 has 455 net. However, the strongest 427 probably had about 455 net.
Put some tires on that beauty
12.2 @104 That cant be right.
More like 114mph, my LS3, C6 runs low 12's in the 112-115mph range.
I would have both idc if the new one is faster
12.2s/104MPH? R U kidding me ?
I'll take the '66. The '84 and up models are utter trash. They do not deserve nor should they have the Corvette name. Since you can still get a brand new Shelby Cobra (albeit in kit form) it would be really nice to be able to get a replica of the C2 Corvette as well.
57 - 67 Vettes kick ass ******
Whats Carlos doing here!!!??
+Flat4Buggy oh thanks, I wonder why... Anyway I like Carlos, motortrend videos were less and less anyway, I hope he does good.
+Flat4Buggy thanks for the info
Don't waste our time with the 2015 car. Totally insulated from the road..boring..
Take a '66 427 with old school M21 and factory open sidepipes and you'll understand.
Give me the 66 any day.
If that '66 wasn't a sports car then then nothing was a sports car then XD What do you want?
wow, subscribe for Carlos !!
man where were you ?!
i'd take the 66' without a doubt
But does the 2015 corvette look better?
That's funny...A lot of work. You see we got lazy.
