a song that always broke me up was hurt by johnny cash. it was and still is the only song i've cried to. the piano getting louder and more intense paired with his shaky voice always made me sob my eyes out. it like a great song you never want to listen to again because it makes you feel terrible.

About Bowie's final album. Musicians he worked with had no idea about his illness at the beginning (btw James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem worked on that album also). They found out when his hair and eyebrows fell out after undergoing a chemotherapy which was at the end of 2015, so the album was almost finished already. Only a few knew from the beginning, including Tony Visconte who produced that album. A worth mentioning fact is that Bowie knew it's terminal just a few months before he died, also one week before he made a music video for Lazarus, so we can only think that he was suspecting what's coming

I was not into Bowie. When he was alive. I never understood. “What makes Bowie so important” i said to myself. I had a loot of Free time back in the day so i made a decision. I decided to binge listen David Bowie discograpghy. Back in 2018. It took me around 2 weeks. Reading stories, properly learning the Man. It was hard though listening the same Man’s 20+ Albums oldest to newest. It was hard.
But you know what was the hardest.
It was Not listening Never Let Me Down, after listening 5 albums back to back in the same day
    It was Blackstar.
It broke me. Cried like an Hour
All those research and the importance of Bowie it was a Success for me. I finally understood and I had (and still have) a huuuge respect and love for him.
    R.I.P Bowie.

I really commend that you don't cut out those vulnerable moments where you get upset, emotional reactions good or bad are a big part of why we connect with music.
I missed when you asked this question but my suggestion would have been Teardrop by Massive Attack (one of my favourite songs of all time). The story behind it is that while Elizabeth Fraser was writing/recording the lyrics and vocals she discovered that Jeff Buckley (who she had a former relationship with) had gone missing and had drowned. She said the song is about him in a way.

Im Not In Love - 10cc. This is a song that had an incredible story, particularly the fact that it utilized some pretty radical recording techniques for the time. TOOL - Wings For Marie and 10,000 Days should’ve definitely been on here. Both songs written about Maynard James Keenan’s mother’s death and life dealing with her condition; she was paralyzed after a stroke and spent 29 years in a partially paralyzed state. Sleep by MCR is one. The band was staying in the Paramour Mansion while recording the Black Parade, which is known to be haunted, and all of the members had paranormal experiences. Most notably, Gerard struggled with night terrors (hence the recording at the beginning of the track), and had to stay in his brother Mikey's (the bassist) room. The mansion gave Mikey such an intense, strange feeling of discomfort that he temporarily left the group. If you listen to the isolated vocals of the song, you can hear Gerard elaborate on the night terrors. Sleep wasn't originally supposed to be on the album; it wasn't even written until all of that stuff happened. And now it's one of the best songs on The Black Parade.

Blackstar has been my favourite album of all time ever since I listened to it and I don't think that's gonna change any time soon. It's so beautiful, yet haunting, terrifying even...grappling with the concept of death, it's inevitability, coming to terms with it, questions like "what am I leaving behind, am I ready yet?"...all things everyone does in their own personal way and this is definitely the piece of art that has most struck a chord with me with this topic that so terrifies yet mystifies me, right next to "The View from Halfway Down" from Bojack Horseman. It enlists so many thoughts and feelings whenever I listen it's...stunning. Incredible. A perfect final Album.

I Appear Missing - Queens of the Stone Age. To put it briefly, it's about when Josh Homme 'died' while having an operation on his knee, and how bed ridden and depressed he was from it.
Wings for Marie & 10k Days - Tool. Its about Maynard's (the lead singer) mother who suffered an aneurysm when he was 11 (the song Jimmy is about that). She was permanently paralyzed/disabled from it (the song The Patient is about that) and took her 10,000 Days to pass away. Its genuinely really heartbreaking.
Mein Teil - Rammstein, inspired by the Armin Meiwes case. A guy was looking for someone who was willing to be eaten, he found a guy, they cut off his peen and ate it, then with the victims permission killed him and then ate his remains. All of which was recorded. Pleasant stuff.

I feel like "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days" by Tool should be on here. The song is about his mother that suffered a stroke, and was left paralyzed for the rest of her life (roughly 10,000 days), yet remained a devout Christian. He never understood his mother's beliefs, making a track a few years prior called "Judith" mocking them, but Wings for Marie is a lot more understanding of her belief, and is a beautiful tribute to his mother.

Yeah, there's a whole whole lot of lore behind Donuts. So like. His family would bring him small singles to cut up and make songs with. And those are the "donuts" cause the records looked like little donuts to him. And my personal favorite song is Don't Cry. He wrote the song for his mother and his brother, who had spent countless nights in the hospital with him, worrying. So he wrote the song to tell them not to cry. And it was, I believe, one of the last songs he ever wrote. His fingers couldn't move very much. And he kept the song a secret from his mother and brother until after his death when the album released.

Moonlight on the River - Mac DeMarco
If i remember correctly, the song basically talks about Mac's relationship with his dying dad and how he feels after his dad hadnt been present pretty much his whole life. He struggles to find a way to make mends and to figure out what to say to him as he reflects his own life. The album that it's from, "this old dog," tackles that same topic and about him fearing to be like his dad. It's a very powerful song and one that hits even harder when you compare to what Mac usually plays (happy, go lucky chill music).

There’s songs like Lithium (Nirvana) which are based on characters the artists make in their heads. But then there’s ones like Fiction (Avenged) that hit harder once you know more than just what the lyrics tell you.

Sad I missed this but I've got a good one. "God Forgive These Bastards" Songs From The Forgotten Life Of Henry Turner by The Taxpayers is a concept album based on the life story of a homeless man, Henry Turner. Henry Turner was slated to be a professional baseball player for Georgia Tech and was personal friends with Mickey Mantle, but due to underlying mental illness and substance abuse ended up as a rambling vagrant. The lead singer says he met Turner waiting for the bus, where he threatened to bite his ear off as a joke and told him outlandish stories everytime he came around. One day, Turner appeared more disheveled than usual, and gave the lead singer a fistful of bus tickets and said he had to skip town for a while. The next time the singer heard about him was in the obituaries. He decided to write this album as a way to compile and share some of his stories. It's an incredible folk-punk album with some genuinely heartfelt moments. Some standouts are "As The Sun Beat Down", "Drinking With Mickey Mantle", "Some Rotten Man", and by far their most popular "I Love You Like An Alcoholic". There's a whole book to accompany the album as well. Really great stuff.

The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini
The band was an off shoot of one of the major players in post-hardcore, At the Drive-In. The band used psychedelics and opiates in crafting their first album: Deloused in the Comatorium, sadly though their sound manipulator passed due to an overdose shortly after the album was released. They created a concept album out of the event as well as a book their sound manipulator found called Frances the Mute, based off of names found in the book. For their final track on the record, the song was a mix of epic conceptual conclusion, as well as live jams re-recorded out of improv bits from their live shows. They wanted to do their own version of a King Crimson track, and go absolutely nuts in the 32 minutes of songage. Definitely recommend the album Frances the Mute but if you need a track that's a standout.

Two songs come to mind for me, both from metal bands.
(CONTENT WARNING FOR CHILD ABUSE/MOLESTATION FOR THE FIRST SONG.)
The first song is "Daddy" by Korn. It's about the painful experience of being molested by an adult as a child. The singer for Korn, Johnathan Davis, was molested by a babysitter when he was a child, and his parents didn't believe him. Near the end of the song, Johnathan starts to scream, cry, and curse out loud while the band continues playing, at his request (I believe when he came into the studio, he said something along the lines of "whatever happens, don't stop playing"). It starts around the 5 minute mark and doesn't stop until the song is over (the song's about 9 minutes long not counting the hidden track called "Michael and Geri"). Korn rarely ever plays this song live.
The second song is "(515)" by Slipknot. This was the intro song for their album "Iowa". The vocals for this intro were not done by Slipknot's lead singer Corey Taylor, but were instead done by Sid Wilson, the band's DJ. The story goes that Sid was visiting his grandfather who was sick, but by the time he arrived, his grandfather had already passed away. When he entered the studio, he started breaking down and repeatedly screaming "DEATH". Some creepy guitar was added and some editing was made, and was put in the album as its intro. It's 1 minute long.

TW: suicide, stalking, stroke, dementia, abduction, torture, rape, polio, oral sex, arson, Alzheimer’s disease, fatal heart attack
This definitely needs an update, here’s some suggestions:
Nirvana, “Polly”: Another grunge song built on a dark true story. In 1987 (ironically, the same year Nirvana was formed), a 14-year-old girl was kidnapped from a concert in Tacoma, Washington by man named Gerald Friend (yes, his actual name). She was raped and tortured with various implements (including a blowtorch). Somehow, she found a way to escape and went to safety. Kurt admired her bravery and was inspired to write this.
Sarah McLachlan, “Possession”: The breakthrough hit was based on letters from two stalkers. One of the stalkers, Uwe Vandrei, sued *her* for using his letters and asked for songwriting CREDIT! The case never went to court because the stalker ended his life in the autumn of 1994.
Fastball, “The Way”: An elderly couple from Texas takes their annual trip to a fiddling festival. Sounds heartwarming? Sadly, the couple was suffering from ill health; the husband was still recovering from a stroke and the wife had signs of dementia. Their car was found off a cliff in Arkansas because they had deliberately crashed it so they would die together.
The Temptations, “I Wish It Would Rain": In 1967, Motown lyricist Rodger Penzabene discovered that his wife was cheating on him. He used this as the impetus for the heartbreak in the song, using the rain metaphor to deftly describe the lack of his wife’s love is turning a sunny day to cloud-filled sorrow (“Let it rain, let it rain/I need rain to disguise/The tears in my eyes”). The song was a massive hit, hitting the Billboard Pop chart at 4 and #1 on the R&B chart after its release on December 21, 1967. Tragically, Penzabene took his life on December 31, 1967.
Leonard Cohen, “Chelsea Hotel No. 2”: This song is indeed about a short affair Cohen had with Janis Joplin. In later years, Cohen regretted being so blunt about their encounter (“Giving me head on the unmade bed/While her limousine waited in the street”). Despite the lapse in sexual tact, it’s eloquent in describing how both Cohen and Joplin bond over not being conventionally attractive (“we are ugly, but we still have the music”).
The Drifters, "Save the Last Dance for Me”:
Songwriter Doc Pomus had polio as a child and was wheelchair bound after a fall down the stairs. Shortly after the accident, Pomus married Broadway actress Willi Burke. Due to his accident, he was unable to dance with his wife at the wedding ceremony and his brother danced with Burke instead. Using a wedding invitation, he jotted down the lyrics “But don't forget who's takin’ you home/And in whose arms you're gonna be/So darling, save the last dance for me.”
Deep Purple, “Smoke On the Water”: The band was recording their album in the lakeside casino in Montreux, Switzerland on December 4, 1971. In the same venue, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention performed a set when someone set off a flare gun. The casino burned down and destroyed the Mothers’ band equipment. The members of Deep Purple could see smoke over the water of Lake Geneva as they were evacuated from the fire. That arsonist (who was never caught) gave inspiration to a rock classic.
“Come Dancing", The Kinks: Singer-songwriter Ray Davies wrote this song about his childhood in London. His older sister, Rene, loved to dance at the local dance hall, the Palais (nicknamed the Pally). She bought Ray his first guitar, a Spanish acoustic guitar, on his 13th birthday. Tragically, while dancing at the Palais, she died of a heart attack at age 31. The lyrics expressed how his sister’s death and the demolition of the Pally was the death of his childhood. However, Davies takes solace in her memory and celebrates her joy of dancing.
“Veronica", Elvis Costello: Co-written with Paul McCartney, the lyrics speak of an elderly woman who has Alzheimer’s. The woman is Costello’s paternal grandmother, Mabel Josephine Jackson, nicknamed Molly.
In his autobiography, Costello describes her as occasionally having moments where she could remember things such as childhood memories. The song also mentioned her sharp mind sadly dulled by her disease (“Well she used to have a carefree mind of her own and a delicate look in her eye/
These days I'm afraid she's not even sure if her name is Veronica”). As a Roman Catholic, her confirmation name was Veronica.

A few people knew getting into starting Blackstar, and the musicians he was working with only found out the November before the album came out, the following January

The song I appear missing by QOTSA really starts to change when you realize Josh Homme died on the table during surgery. When he woke up he felt a piece of himself was gone. He never goes into much detail about how he got Staph infection in his arm...only saying he was working too much and doing too many drugs...but I believe if you read between the lines I think his infection may have been needle related. Regardless he died (of course he was revived) and it certainly changes the feel and meaning of the song.

one cool one is sleep by mcr. the whole black parade album was recorded in the paramour mansion which is supposedly haunted. Like papa roach did before them, the band experienced many things like doors slamming randomly, constant dread and other creepy shit you can read about. anyways the beginning and end of the song features an audio clip. this clip is of gerard (main singer) telling his experiences of these extremely vivid night terrors, where hed feel like someone was strangling him, seeing his family and everyone he loved burn to death, sleep paralysis, and more. i think its really interesting knowing this backstory because it adds to the horror of the song, and the pain you can hear in his voice when hes screaming about trying to wake up but he cant

I was expecting the Kanye Part to be about the song "Never see me again" It's such a disturbing and sad song because it was written and recorded while Kanye west was incredibly suicidal and the song goes back in fourth from him trying to convince himself to stay alive and doing the opposite. It's a really good listen and If you're going to do a part 2 then I'd recommend it. It's only a leak and it's very undeveloped but it's still a really interesting story and song. Would recommend pulling up the lyrics while listening to it cause it's very difficult to understand

Bowie's death hit me like a truck. At the time it happened I was really getting into him which just felt like such a shame. I wasn't super familiar with his discography but he was one of the first artists I resonated with on a personal level and I just couldn't get enough. I distinctly remember where I was after the news really sunk in about his death when I heard a DJ talk about it on the radio as mum was driving me home from somewhere. She stopped by at a shop and left the radio on for me while I waited in the car and, throughout that time, a song started playing. It wasn't Bowie, it didn't even really sound like Bowie, but something in my brain just 100% convinced me that it was. It's like when you break up with someone and you see their face everywhere on people that have nothing to do with them. It was such an emotional moment that I just broke down and cried. I realised then just how much the man really meant to me as a creative force.
I never really "got" Blackstar on a musical level for a long time because I wasn't ever really used to something so avant-garde compared to my usual taste, but once I did, I can't recall ever crying to a musician as much as I did to Bowie. To this day, I still shed a tear to the moment the second last track transitions to the final and the Bowie opens with "I know something's very wrong". Needless to say, it's now one of my favourite albums of all time. Up there with Heroes and Ziggy. Artist until the end, that man.

(this is what I loosely remember reading)
The final song in Nujabes's "luvsic hexology" was close to not existing. The hip-hop album was produced over many years by producer nujabes and vocalist shing02. It wasn't planned to be an album or even specifically a hexology, it was just a series of singles made over the years.
In 2010 nujabes tragically passed away. On his phone some time afterwards they found a very short audio loop titled "luvsic finale" that shing02 hadn't even heard about. The loop was extended and fleshed out (I don't personally know by who), and shing02 recorded his lyrics to the full instrumental and tied up the entire collection perfectly, creating (imo) the best song out of the whole thing.
The song is called "luvsic part 6. The grande finale"

Old Man Saxon's song (and EP) "the perils" was created/recorded in the back of his car while he was homeless and living out of it. He worked at a restaurant, showered in gyms, used public bathrooms, etc. And he speaks about those experiences on that project with lyrics like "wake up all alone.. sh*t, shower, shave, it's taking a whole day"
"Fallacies about where I'm staying.. really in the back on the passengers side.. look where I'm at tonight.. just want to go home"
I think, while he didn't gain mainstream success, he did end up being a rap teacher at a music college. He also now has a place, wife, and kid.

This one is tough but the song Real Death by Mount Eerie is a raw, graphic, and morbid description of his reaction to and feelings towards his wife's recent passing. I've heard a lot of "appreciate the ones around you while they're still here" songs but my God there's something about this song that isn't comparable to any of those. Just thinking about it has me tearing up while typing this. Here are some of the lyrics:
"When I walk into the room where you were and look into the emptiness instead"
"Crusted with tears, catatonic and raw, I go downstairs and outside and you still get mail
A week after you died, a package with your name on it came
And inside was a gift for our daughter you had ordered in secret, and collapsed there on the front steps I wailed
A backpack for when she goes to school a couple years from now
You were thinking ahead to a future you must have known
Deep down would not include you
Though you clawed at the cliff you were sliding down
Being swallowed into a silence that's bottomless and real"

Sam Ray of Teen Suicide has been pretty open about his past drug problems and a lot of times he'd write about his obsessions with death and his struggles with depression. In the Teen Suicide song "doing all the things I used to do with people, part 2", he really dives into the thoughts and feelings of being an addict and how it can make you irrational and apathetic with lyrics like "I wont be nice to anyone.. i dont see the point.. i wont get clean for the rest of my life.."
However there is a very heavy little detail about 33 seconds into the song where, while delivering the line "this is not a song about sleep or death, it's about something smaller and paler than that. I'm not gonna show it to my friends"
There is actual audio in the background of (I assume) him rustling a plastic baggy and slapping his arm. (A common practice before shooting up heroin, which he admits was his drug of choice, done to raise a vein)
Some might find that distasteful but I found it to be vulnerable and honest.

The fact that he didn’t make it to the final moments of Jermey makes me sad because that’s literal Musical Bliss

Seeing you openly crying about Bowie was honestly a bit distressing
Hope you'll feel better soon. Be kind to yourself

You don’t really see such emotional reactions in CZcams videos and I kinda froze when I heard you choke up at Lazarus. It’s honestly really nice to see that from someone.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond‘s lyrics refer to the declining mental health of SYD‘s. With the lyrics being amazing the instrumental is other worldly as well

i feel like you didnt really give desert song a chance because you got distracted partially through the song. it genuinely is one of my favorite mcr tracks and i feel like you need to give it another listen with the backstory

    TesseracT - April
This song has always hit me hard. It is written from the perspective of 3 different characters, and is based on a real life event experienced by the vocalist, Daniel. He used to work as a police officer and the song is telling a story about abuse, as seen from the police officer (Daniel himself), the victim and her abuser. What I think makes the song even more depressing is the tragically beautiful soft vocals paired with the downtuned guitars common in progressive metal. The song awakes something more than the typical sad song vibes.

80s era King Crimson is underrated as hell. Nice to see it get more recognition.

The best part about ‘The Chain’ is the incredible last part with the bass hook and guitar instrumental outro. Worth listening to that part alone.

Can't believe you don't like common people mate, but at the same time I feel like it's specifically a british anthem. So I suppose I'm not too surprised after all haha

Dont know if this one counts but Passover another song by Joy Division on their album closer which was recorded while lead singer Ian Curtis was going through a divorce . In the song he talks directly to his wife in lines like " is this the role that you wanted to live i was foolish to ask for so much " because him and his wife were married at 19 years old and had a child at the age of 21 but Ian was mostly absent and away from home touring and working on music . Also while on tour its believed that he was having an affair with another woman. All of this made Ian feel extremely guilty Ian commited suicide months after the album was released (It's also weird despite of the dark lyrics he was singing none of the other band members gave much attention)
