From Texas here, I don't meet too many Christians that hate on Muslims. Muslims from outside say college campuses often have more in common with Christians here. But it might be different stay up north maybe?
It really depends on the type of Muslim. Its more than just not being an extremist, but also being the kind of Muslim that openly opposes extremist and fundamentalist movements. Muslim communities that behave like this are the ones that people of other religions are most likely to get along with, examples include the Sufi Muslims of Morocco and the Nusantara Muslims of Indonesia. However, people who live near Muslim communities that are more willing to embrace extreme beliefs like Salafism or Wahhabism and believe in traditional ideas like sharia are going to be more hostile, because Muslims who follow these ideas are the ones who are more likely to act violently against nonbelievers and others they consider opposed to Islam. The issue is further confounded in that most religious communities have had long histories of war with Islam, and when these sentiments are combined with the large presence of Islamic terror groups its difficult to build trust.

While he is correct that the intelligence services will inflame tensions, those tensions are not artificial. People forget that there is more to religion than just moral systems, it's a whole comprehensive theology, cosmology, social structure, and in some cases political and economic system. The only reason there is any cooperation now is because the left has gotten so degenerate that we are all forced to work together to prevent society from collapsing.
