  • What do you do when baboons invade your town? How do you protect yourself from a monkey raid? The residents of this town in South Africa are fighting a constant battle against their nosey neighbours: the local baboons.
What do you do when Baboons can open doors and windows? In the beautiful town of Overburg, South Africa, the baboons are taking over. Opportunistic and curious, they’ve discovered that hunting and gathering is a lot easier in someone else’s well-stocked kitchen. Unsurprisingly, their human neighbours are less than delighted and many want to shoot the baboons on sight. It’s up to the local park ranger to try and keep the peace. We follow a tribe of baboons as they show their babies how to break into houses, open fridges and remove French windows.

@@badtrekee4348 yup. The monkeys have just as much of a right to live on the land as the humans do and if anything were there long before the humans showed up. Also if you're going to live in a place like this knowing full well about the issues people are facing because of the wildlife but choose to live there anyway, it's up to you to protect your home and self from the wildlife in whatever way that works and not up to the local game wardens to just kill or displace the animals because you chose to live in a place the animals also inhabit and neglected to take the proper actions and educate yourself and family members on how to safely coexist with them

The whole reason that baboons go into town is because the humans don’t know how to manage their houses and food resources. It’s the humans fault. We took away their land where they would forage for food like they would in the wild. Baboons are going to be baboons, we can’t change that. But we can change how we handle our situation.
It’s so frustrating that people rely on the authorities to fix the baboon problem for them, when the solution is in their own hands.

I'm sorry but it's completely ridiculous the woman refuses to do a thing to fortify her home to keep the baboons out. It would be an easy fix for the whole town to put up bars on the windows and lock their doors. I suppose what some of the people want is to have someone kill every baboon in the area, which is completely unacceptable.

So very often our human history has shown that people have never had a problem coming in to an occupied area indiscriminately conquoring, killing and pillaging.
Taking whatever we want to fulfill an emotional need. Not a physical one Taking over. Going to war. We'd rather kill and destroy than to compromise and work with the locals and the land.
I'm admiring how the baboons negotiate and work with the situations presented to them. When they want something (or need something like food) they will look for the easiest and least confrontational way.
They aren't looking to hoard anything or conqor others just for the excess goods or personal power. They seek a peaceful working solution. They aren't malicious or violent bullies, like us.
We can and should be enter a place with the attitude of incorporating our lives within the natural environment. Instead of with an eye to change it to suit us.. Completely altering a space ruins it.
Running off the inhabitants is morally wrong. We all have a place of value in this world. We need to learn to really respect that other creatures have the right to survive. And we should be using the land gently.
We are desiccating the planet. Baboons could teach us a lot about how to negotiate our way in life. How to live at peace within our world. As a species, we are far from the least harmful.

That lady deliberately made her child scared.
Reminded her to remember who was in the house yesterday.
Both of us were really frightened (the child doesnt seem scared at all, just curious about the animals)
and re-enforced the fear by repeating that she had to hide her in the closet,
      mommy had to shout,
pray to jesus to save them,
UNTIL SHE MADE HER CHILD CRY.
Sorry, but that was HORRID manipulation to do to her own child,
to make her forever afraid, just for the dang tv show!
      Atrocious behavior by Mom.
And then to top it all off...
We'll call Daddy because we're just helpless women & children & it will make you feel better, after i just riled you all up!
And then continued the emotional assault after the child calmed down again.
      UGH! MANIPULATION TO THE HILT!

Having gone camping frequently, bears are a lot like babboons. If they find ez food they keep coming back, hence bear "proof" items to try and discourage foraging. If the humans made it harder for the babboons to get in it will eventually change the behaviora. That said it takes time and effort and is the price you "pay" living somewhere like that.
That said I do sympathize with the humans, that is very frustrating dealing with them!

That four year old who had her arm and her leg ripped off, that is too much. Simply for standing too close to agroup of baboons. And while all this was going on thehumans and parents off the 4 year old weŕe legally prevented from doing anything to prevent the baboon from hurting the child further. This makes me sick. The baboons have all the rights and the humans have none. That is completely unacceptable. I hope the government can do something to further protect the human children and their parents.

Why dont they make a feeding & watering station up in the hills for the baboons?
Then they wouldnt have to come down for food & water.
Could even do a man-made lake-pool for them to bath, play & cool off in.
And, for doors & windows, why not install steel bars that are spaced enough so they cant climb in, so doors & windows can still stay open for the breeze & fresh air, but still keep them out?
Solutions arent as hard as it seems, but people always expect the wild animals to change, when in fact, it's the humans that need to use their own brains & change what they choose to do to make things more bearable.
Wild animals dont have that capacity to figure it out, so i has to be US that figures out ways to make things work.
It might cost a bit for steel bars, but it's a one time expense.
The food would be an ongoing expense, but you'd think there are people & organizations that might help with that?
After all, they pay to employ a man to stay there daily to watch where, when, and what the baboons are up to.
Just modify his job to feed & water them daily too.
I'm just saying, those 2 things would be cheaper than the constant damage to homes, people's doc bills & pet's vet bills & the injuries & possibly deaths of innocent animals that just dont know any better.
I'm sure there's other solutions that i havent thought of.
Basically, if you give them what they need up there in the hills, they wont need to come down.
They may still, for a while, until they realize they dont need to.
Occasional baboon forays into town may still happen, but not nearly as often as is happening now.
If we're going to encroach upon their home, we need to make allowances for them to sustain themselves too, without leading them into the temptation to raid homes for food, water, and such because we've taken their hunting grounds for our homes.
We can at least try to coexist, rather than wipe them out to extinction, or make them violent out of fear of humans hurting them.
    I'm just sayin...
