- You may have seen the Smoke Top cocktail smoker on Instagram as it's been all the rage this past year, especially on an Old Fashioned. We finally got our hands on one and put it through a test. This was our first time using it, so it's somewhat of an unboxing, and we were overall quite impressed! This cocktail smoker definitely works as advertised, and the visual and aromatic effects it has on your cocktail are pretty stunning.
Aside from the direct effect it has on your cocktail, the wood smoke aromatics fill the room and create an amazing "cabin in the woods" type effect. We thought this was an especially nice touch, and would be impressive when hosting.
The smoke paired well with the bourbon and bitters in an Old Fashioned, but we think it would also work great with aged tequila and even a neutral spirit like vodka.
The Smoke Top smoker really does create an immersive experience, and if you're into wood aromatics, it's definitely worth checking out.

I bought the $89 set and received woodchips of Hickory, cherry, oak and maple. Then I bought 375 ml bottles of Markers Mark, Knob Creek and Jim Beam extra aged. I smoked the different bourbons with the different chips. The Hickory tastes like a liquid campfire, the Oak has a nice woody taste, the cherrywood gave it a little sweetness aftertaste as did the maple. One note on your video. Do not ignite the torch while pointing it down the chimney, you'll get a butane taste. Ignite the point the torch straight down. Another hint, let the smoke settle for about a minute, after smoking, stir the drink.
All great flavor notes, James, appreciate it. And you're right about not igniting while pointing it down into the chimney! Definitely want to avoid any butane taste. To reiterate, ignite away from the cocktail, then point down to smoke the wood.
@@liberandcoNot sure I get this part - can you please explain again? Thanks in advance ;-)
Smoke the glass first for 2-3 minutes, then poor your drink. Then smoke again. Taste is phenomenal!
Solid strategy there! Probably get great flavor that way.
Also freeze the glass (20 mins) for a few minutes before smoking, smoke sticks to cold like a magnet
Спасибо за видео. Дочь подарила на день рождения такой же набор, научился по вашему примеру делать себе виски и ром с новыми вкусами!
Thank you so much! Thanks for giving us a watch and can't wait to see what your next cocktail adventures are like! Reach out if you have any questions! Cheers!
Appreciate your ‘cabin in the woods’ adjectives’ sprinkled with fairy dust. 💕
Awesome video, just what I needed to know atm

Great video.. never tried a smoked cocktail. Looking forward to trying ❤
It's so good!
What are other good cocktails to smoke besides the Old Fashioned. It seems to be the only one that I see videos on.
Hey there! Other good bets would be the Manhattan, Vieux Carre, Rob Roy, Boulevardier etc. We've only explored using the smoker on whiskey cocktails, but I think there could be excellent gin or even vodka based ones that could use a hint of smoke!
my wife bought me a Taigin Cocktail Smoker Kit for my BD and I have never used one and I have questions. can i 'smoke' any type of whiskey or does it need to be a cocktail? I love Jameson, Skrewball, and various types of whiskey. thank you
You can smoke whatever you want! Some people use the smoker for food even. But you could smoke tequila, for instance, vodka, etc. We recommend trying stuff out and experimenting!
I never know what to do with my hands! 😂
It's funny how much you think about your hands when you're on camera, lol.
Thats a rye whiskey not a burbon but great video other wise
Ricky Bobbie reference.
Did we drop a Ricky Bobbie reference in this vid?!
I tried smoking my cocktails. My experiments suggest that only basic drinks will work with this. Which is why ALL videos on smoking ONLY use the Old Fashioned. Don't do this with more complex drinks because you will only ruin the drink.
While smoking a drink definitely doesn't work all the time, we've had success beyond the Old Fashioned. Try smoking a margarita, for example! Almost like using a mezcal as the base spirit, it definitely adds a unique smoke element that works well with the agave base. Cheers Ivan!
Mezcal by process already has a smoky flavor. Definitely prefer Mezcal over tequila because of this.
Your putting too much in the glass there’s no room for the smoke if you’re doing it that way and you need to let it set for a minute don’t immediately pull it off and waft all the smoke out try this put just ice in the glass you’re going to use smoke it with your topper leave the topper on for 2 minutes then take it off and pour your drink in to the smoke filled glass
That's a great way to do it.
Smoke something else bro
