  • Image colorization AI in the form of web service, papers and video editing filters are being explored in this video. Through benchmarking and comparing test results, I've concluded a top 10 colorization AI in this video. This video excludes machine learning theory, as some AIs are not published and cannot be compared easily, and as people usually just look for the results, I think this way of ranking the AIs is fairly reasonable.

HIGHLY suggest you colorize a picture of a loved one and get it printed (cheap is fine) and put it in a frame. Doesn't have to be huge. Just a good photograph. That makes an amazing present (also it's pretty cheap) - remember to do research on colors of importance such as Military uniforms, a dress a person wore (if you are able to speak to anybody that was there) - and just do it. People are always blown away.

7:00 The original market picture doesn´t appear 100% lifelike either. The skin tone seems better in MyHeritage.
And I´m sure every photoshop app has a slider to adjust saturation or temperature, if needed.
Good is good enough, meaning that other things like the horizontal lines on the bottom (and focus with Monroe) start to demand our attention when colorization is this good.
Regarding the original market, it appears there´s daylight on the left, and incandescent bulbs on the right. But when colorized, every light source seems to be LED. I wonder if the temperature of the light can be detected when scanning an actual negative, instead of a print.
It´s amazing nontheless, how far we have come.

I like the video but I think the ranking could have issues as if the images used in testing were in the original data set by chance, there will be unfairly good results when comparing between ai’s: and because two of the images (mr king and monroe) are so common, there is a fair chance that the images are in some of their datasets. I think it would be a better comparison if you took your own photos because then you would know for sure how well each of these programs can extrapolate on images they haven’t seen. It would not be impressive after all, for a program to colorise images it has already seen.

Interesting video. I personally preferred the My Heritage recoloured version of the marketplace to the very saturated original. If I treid to edit the photo myself I would certinly adjust some of the fruits to be more accurate but overall I liked the more muted colours better.
I can see why you chose to compare the results with those that ranked closely with them but the marketplace seemed more relevant to the original most of the time. You could maybe use a subtle transistion matched with your audio or effect to more easily identify which images you are comparing. As a viewer I found that I had to keep checking the words at the top too much to keep track of which versions you were comparing. It's probably hard to see it as a viewer because when you are editing you have looked at it so many times that it all seems so obvious even without the titles at the top.

    "Neural Network-based Automatic Image Colorization
" hosted on Tsukuba University works great on some historical images. It colourizes the RAF roundels and even Nazi swastikas. I use it to colourize airship pictures like the Hindenburg. Also note that you must use panchromatic images (where red is grey and blue is black) or else it will make British roundels look like French ones and vice versa. The downside is that it outputs at a low resolution, so you must use Photoshop to extract the colour layer and scale it over the source image as a luminance greyscale layer.

Hey, I've got a question. Does this AI approach to colorization work with half-toned images? I am interested in adding color to some photos I have found in vintage newspapers, and of course these are halftone illustrations. I know you can use "gaussian blur" to eliminate the halftoning effect, but this also reduces sharpness. Can these AI colorization programs work directly with halftone illustrations? PS -- I am blown away by the My Heritage results. The resulting photo actually appears more balanced and "real" in its color than the original photo.

Whether ai colorizer program you use, they are both awesome, now just imagine you have accidentally recorded somebody’s marryday in B&W mode or in nightvision mode, no problem anymore becausr now you can recover most colors based on object recognition and shades of gray, sure nightvision will require some contrast & brightness adjustments ,but then those ai colorizers can do their work,
Now just imagine if future cameras & smartphone cameras will be B&W only ,but will contain the best ai colorizer to make up for it, then cameras can be made cheaper😁

Nightvision doesn't pick up color, even in the traditional sense of black and white. I don't think it would work well without another dataset.

Do you think 1st place wins 2nd and 3rd place despite having the same foundation code because it uses a different (and lower) render factor which is supposed to give more vivid images? This could make any image from 1st place "appear" better in comparison?

    • @bycloudAI
      @bycloudAI  Před 3 lety

Well technically 1st place’s code is evolved from Deoldify. But I am not sure how exactly different, but it has definitely grew not only architecturally but also training wise.

I'd argue the first place AI colorizer did a better job than the original photo did. Exposure look nicer, colour saturation was nicer. The blacks looked less noisy aswell.
