Words fail to define the majesty that is the desert- her beauty she reveals only to those whose heart she has hopelessly and tenderly captured, the memories of her mercilessly yet lovingly bind me so that even if set free I cannot be entirely- her face, and the movement of her dances I see in the gardens of my heart. The yearning for her is as relentless as the Sun, the nearness of her sweeter than the waters of an oasis. So may I never be free!
As salaam u aleikoum ! I lived and worked in Saudi, Qatar and Oman, and even Libya, for about 15 years - and still that movie inspires me ! I've seen what was left of the railway Lawrence blew up (to be honest I was desperate on a journey back to Jeddah from Medain Saleh (Nabatean city, like Petra) for a pee, and had to pee on what was left of what he blew up ! - lol - no disrespect intended to TE Lawrence, or even Peter O'Toole !) - but seriously I know that land, I know the people - I taught them English, and still they respect and honour TE Lawrence, or Orrens, if you like. And yes - Omar Sharif - bloody fantastic ! - Alec Guinness too, and many others. Music by Maurice Jarre. Truly a classic movie - for a classic man.
And Anthony Quinn as Auda Abu Taiy ! He was so good in his portrayal, that even without speaking a word of Arabic, he had the local cast well and truly on his side - look it up in Wikipedia !
Politicians wanted to get TE involved in defining who got what after 1918 - e.g that scene in Damascus - but he'd had enough by then. He sought anonymity - but missed the old military life, even enlisting in the Air Force at one point, as an ordinary airman, under the name Ross, in Plymouth. But he was a friend of great writers of the day - his own work - Seven Pillars of Wisdom - is still highly regarded. So sooner or later, people found out who he was. He loved his motorbike - and as in the film - he was killed riding it. He's buried in Westminster Abbey - among Kings and Heroes - as he deserved. As for me - an example to live up to !
This video made me cry. Having seen my all-time favorite film (guess) last night & then viewing this...oh, progress...is the Desert still...clean...?? I cannot help but weep when I see the freeways, Dubai, the oil suckers...thank you for a beautiful take on Lawrence of Arabia, an, and then . Well done.
