In my family they were called "hope chests." I don't know if everyone called them that or not. My mom's generation was the last to receive them (c'mon mom, that was a nice tradition and you owe me a fancy box!). I guess on the other hand, my parents divorcing might've been a bad omen for a thing called a "hope chest" so maybe that's fair.

My dress from 1985 was properly preserved. I’d planned to cut it up and make preemie burial gowns to donate but then my brother asked if it could go to a local church for low-income and transitional housing brides to wear. It took no time for me to say yes. The archivist did a beautiful job.

A friend of mine had her wedding called off when the groom backed out. She was going to toss it when someone else told her about Angel Babies. Her other friend got her in touch with someone who makes baby burial gowns from donated wedding dresses. It was the first time either of us had heard of them and she gladly handed it off. She figured it had been over 20 years and if she ever does meet someone, she’d rather get a different dress anyway.

My only concern would have been suitability ...like would you want to get married in a dress 40 years out of style? I think this a great options for more recent brides but a gown that old probably was better cut up.
The Insecurely housed and poor dont want things like this precisely because that's what they always get. Nobody thinks to donate new clothes or new housewares, that shit goes to goodwill first and whats too bad for good will ends up in shelters...which is demoralizing especially on what is supposed to be your big day. I know gratitude and all that but imagine your homeless, poor and most of the time have no choice or control over anything in your life. You don't get to choose when to wake up, when to go into the shelter for the night, what they serve, how nice or shabby your blankets are, you didn't pick your clothes and now on your wedding day you get a dress thats 40 years out of style and are commanded to be grateful.
I guess my take away is I wish people would donate good, new quality items to charity instead of flipping it for 3 bucks on the web and giving junk to people who already have nothing. I do, I shop amazing deal for the shelter. If I find clothes for 5 bucks or less I buy what I can and donate. The trash I send to goodwill because they also use rag dealers and get paid per pound for the scrap cloth

When fabrics are stored for that long of time... It should have been archivaly stored. This means acids free paper liners and box. All kinds of mold, moth, mites, bugs can grow in moisture trapped environments. Thus, museums who store historical uniforms, and period pieces of the day know all about the importance of proper archival packaging and storing.

      By a "PROFESSIONAL CLEANER"
Professional cleaners understand that a WEDDING DRESS will PROBABLY BE something that will be packed away (not worn as an everyday garment), thus they will treat it accordingly.
There are many factors that go into the preservation of fiber pieces. Such as ventilator, climate control, sun exposure, what the the garment is made of. Some plastics can also cause yellowing on fabrics that are in contact with with it.
You can check my comments with any museum curator and they can tell you as well. Fabric/garment storage for long periods of time, need to be done with care.
Thank you for your comment Rosebud.

My sister has it now since they've long been divorced and my father is passed on so mom doesn't want it. No smell, no discoloring, no hanger marks. No wrinkles. She had it made for her. Beautiful, high quality satin in a simple, timeless cut. No trimming. Just as elegant and wearable today as the day she wore it.

It was boxed beautifully like this, handmade, and the amount and quality of the fabric was just gorgeous. I think she gave it away.
I don't have a daughter to pass it on to, and my son doesn't have good memories of his father so it seemed pointless to keep it in any case.

All I can say, I looooove anything that comes in a box. This would have been awesome to receive my wedding dress in a box. It was just perfect for me, without the fittings etc. Just buy and wear… hahahaha. But yes , we nedd the perfect fit..😊 Almost 17 years ago… live seeing old wedding dresses ❤

The box is specifically for preservation, so you don't buy them in the box like that ☺️

I married in 1979 I had my wedding dress professionally packaged. Then every 5 years i had it professionally cleaned. My daughter had it altered and wore it for her wedding❤. Now my granddaughter wants to wear it in her wedding ❤❤❤❤. My granddaughter still has some years to go until shes married but just knowing she too wants to carry on the tradition warms my heart.

The dots and spots are called foxing, when a slightly damp atmosphere creates an atmosphere perfect for mildew, which may also explain the smell. So its just age and damp.
You said 1991 but the box looked more like 1941.
You need acid free tissue paper to keep it clean and mildew free.

Take it too a good drycleaners, tell them it was preserved from 1991. They'll know how to fix it up. In the meantime, hang it up in the garage to air it out some first.
I worked in the lady's ready to wear department in a few different department stores back then. It was most likely preserved with formaldehyde, that's what stinks. New clothes came in dipped in formaldehyde, that's why they all had tags, and sewn in labels saying to wash before wearing. They used it to preserve the clothes until purchase.
Beautiful dress, good luck with it.

My mother worked in the garment industry for years. She always insisted that we wash our new clothes before wearing them. Even right after they're constructed in the factory, clothes are sometimes sprayed with cleaning chemicals before they are packaged for shipping to the retailers for sale.
