good realistic video- I did this type of work for many years. Soldering where water keeps running towards the heat sucks. The bread and other tricks didn't seem to help much. Even though many plumbers won,t use sharkbite type fitting in a wall, I had god luck with them with pex, copper and cpvc. A coupling with a shut-off works wonders on pipes that won't stop leaking water.

Might be your best BRT video yet! Excellent advice on shutting-off water while away from home, water heaters should be turned down as low as possible, or even shut-off during extended absences.

Pack bread into pipe. It will hold back water until done soldering and will dissolve and flush out with pressure .

I had a pin hole leak in my copper from the second floor bathroom into the garage. Fixed it just like you did. Then I had another pin hole leak coming from the second floor master bathroom. I had just finished a complete bathroom remodel so I was feeling pretty stupid for not upgrading the plumbing in the master bathroom to Pex like everyone suggested. So now I’m doing a complete repipe with Pex-A. In the process I found yet another slow leak. I will never return to copper.

Do you think pex A will last longer than copper? Lol

Actually in my case, yes. The problem appears to be the water. I had a plumber tell me that the water is causing copper lines to leak throughout the area.

@@blipblop92 had a cooper refrigerator run no older than 20 years develope pin hole leaks on both ends. Barring being chewed on by a rodent (always a possibility), pex will outperform that.

@@samfredo8140: it’s often rust in the hot water tank that works it’s way into the copper piping and causes corrosion and pinhole leaks. At that point, it’s too late to think that replacing the tank will solve the issue. Time to replace all the lines in the house.

Watching you struggling with water in the lines, which is one of the most frustrating situations when soldering, I learned a little trick.
I've been an HVAC mechanic for over 30 years and have run into this dozens of times.
So the way I deal with this is pretty simple. I use unions. Where you are joining 2 pieces of pipe, instead of a slip coupling, a union allows you to elevate one side just long enough to hit the 1st half of the union. Having the pipe open to the air also allows for the water in the line to boil off.
When you are done, do the same process on the other half of the pipe. Then, simply put the union together and tighten it down.
No more leak. I hope you find this suggestion helpful. Good video, by the way.
    Thanks, Scott

So much reality to this video. Water in pipes is always a challenge. A compression fitting could have been used instead of soldering.

pin hole leak just get a slip coupling and slip it over the pin hole and sweat it on, no need to replace a hole section

  • @robertcampbell6364
    @robertcampbell6364 Před rokem +1

Once the water is gone, simply clean the pinhole up with a fitting brush, apply flux, heat the dap a little solder and the hole is fixed.

A shop vac to blow the line clean reallly helps. Might have to put s smaller pipe to suck out the H20.

For that pin hole, I would have cut the copper at the center of the pin hole and slid a 1/2” slip coupling over it to encapsulate the pin hole. I also would have done all of my system draining, including breaking\ the vacuum holding water in the fixtures higher than my repair before cutting the pipe. However, I have all of the right plumbing tools, and I wouldn’t have soldered this - I would have used my Pro Press and fixed this with one coupling and no pipe.
