- The Mercenary is a crossbow-wielding character class in Path of Exile 2. This class has shooter-like gameplay, swapping crossbows and ammo types on the fly to inflict deadly combo attacks on his enemies.

The fact you can WASD or do mouse click on ANY character is HUGE.
Finally the resistance has been broken. I don't know why arpg devs are so afraid of wasd. This is great news.
it does fundamentally change a few things but overall it's a net positive, especially if the game is designed around it.@@vichnaiev
Probably the biggest new thing they reveal by now, the amount of impact with this is insane in ARPG genre.
It is! I feel it will be better for peoples hands by just holding a keyboard button rather than the pretty much constant clicking on the mouse that you have to do now.
@@Rex1987you can do it in poe1 even now by using a move only on W, and it is more effective than wasd probably. Maybe even better ergonomically, as you could use qerty for skills, with wasd I feel you are forced to use lmb and rmb. I am using Q for main skill nowadays, and W for moving, if I had to press A I wouldn't be able to.
Still WASD reduces mouse clicking and introduces new mechanics, so a great addition most likely, after readjusting it might be just as effective too. Only time will tell
You just solved the biggest issue with PoE ranged gameplay with WASD movement. Now player can dodge enemy attacks at the same time as attacking and since you no longer need to move mouse to other side of the screen - movement is instant. Brilliant!

so true I remember playing flaskfinder and I had to turn my dpi to max just so I could move my mouse fast enough to input attacks while also trying to keep my distance from enemies and if I messed it up I was liable to get 1 shot or close to it
@@MATCHLESS93melee can do it to tho! So now you can run back and attack the wall of enemies chasing you without worrying about misplacing and getting surrounded

@@MATCHLESS93 What held melee back was how immobile you were. In the end having to rely on nuke the enemy first before they can pound you into sand. WASD controls and dodge roll means that melee can dance around enemies and fight on the move. While ranged still has to stop to fire unless using skills with movement enabled.
The character and the boss commenting while engaging makes it more fun and alive! Love it
They literally do this in PoE 1. Turn your sound on.

Holy crap that boss fight let me know they kept the darkness we all love about this game! Seems like just yesterday people were worried about there being a dead baby (or babydoll) on the beach of Wreaclast; now we have a boss ripping a baby out of her stomach and throwing it at you. And called "The Unwanted".
Not to mention the execution and follow through by all the various times. The mechanics, absolutely, but the artist and animators did their job to sell it - and then there's the SFX team. They had to be giggling their asses off working on her. Like, the babies crying during the Malevolent Newborn add phase comes off as horrifying, and I respect that. The scissors, the self c-section, *the laughs* - all a huge "WTF are you ok?" Awesome.
If they top this (or even just equal it) in other parts of PoE2 we haven't seen yet, then I feel like we're in for a real treat.

@@rolandoredsky4254 Baby also throws up to create puddles of caustic ground. Granted it's visibility after it is being set is quite low.
I really like this slower,more 'strategic' gameplay with clear visual ennemy patterns.
I'm ok if the game goes more nervous at higher level,but I'm bored of the meta 'one shot the boss or get one shoted' ,I really have big hopes for this game,I can't wait !
Wish it would stay like this in endgame but it's Path of Exile, it's all about the zoomy meta. I hope i'm wrong, cause i would really like to get into PoE, i just never could because of how the meta gameplay is like.
@@DoctorStrange01They said it will be slower end game too. That's part of the reason they decided to keep PoE1 around, cause lots of people would not be pleased.
@@Slaythe This is all theory. Once people start using ridiculous builds it will probably not be much different from PoE meta. These characters they show during showcases are very low level. Low level characters in PoE are also slow, but compare them to endgame :D I will trust them when i see it. I don't want the endgame to feel as slow as they've showed in these PoE 2 gameplay trailers so far, but i also don't want the spastic, zoomy gameplay of PoE either. I don't have ADHD.
@@DoctorStrange01 Actually, I do have ADHD and the fast paced, zoomy gameplay is the worst thing you can imagine, I love minion builds and 99% of the time due to not having visual clarity I dont even realise whats going on on my screen, sometimes I even feel like I dont know where im looking at since I dont know where to put my attention because everything happens so fast. Seeing this kind of gameplay has been the best and I really hope PoE2 gets as slow as possible so I can atually look at a game instead of feeling I'm playing an Excell xD
I LOVE strategic gameplay. More than that, only strategic gameplay makes multiplayer meaninful and fun. Unfortunately, I don't believe it is possible to upkeep it all the time in the game, simply because of how such (loot) games work.
I just love that they're evolving ARPG gameplay in meaningful ways, Rather than just focusing on streamlining the experience down to its dullest form.

its crazy the amount of stuff they just keep adding that we would never have thought of and they definitely didnt need to add. some people are definitely gonna enjoy that WASD movement for sure!
And the fact that the clickety clickety movement is still available allows a seamless transition. Blink skills probably still need to be aimed, but this is quite fire.
WASD has been requested hundreds of times along the years, dude.
@@HumaricslastcallBiggest is able to roll backward or side ways while still aiming thus no need to aim with mouse. Maybe the next thing is call on them to make blink works with WASD. I never played console version but I wonder if they got that part already. Probably do.

@@drsawma They can, but the limited inventory space is a design feature of the genre. If you look at PoE in China, they can even buy extra inventory space.

Love the slower combat
POE1 also had this slow tactical combat style when it was launched, but with the years it was replaced by a fast paced 1-2 button smashing one shot combat style that ruined the game for me. I hope POE2 doesn`t became the same.

while it is suppose to be slower, the reality is that this wasn't a speed run it was a demo, you can probably clear this way faster if you knew what you were doing, and intended to do so
This will be a very popular class imo. It just looks super fun
great stuff. What this highlights is that some devs just stop innovating but you guys have continued to experiment. Mashing buttons vs putting actual thought into your chosen weapon and attributes. Great job

You could make a full twin stick shooter game out of this class alone and it would be great I bet.
This whole class might as well be allowing you to play the game in a different genre. It's crazy how creative and in depth they went, between the shooting/crossbow styles, the ammo styles, the sub interactions between types of ammo, it's like they thought of every interaction they could and figured the players would experiment to see what would happen, and oh boy are we not gonna be disappointed. I don't doubt too that there's gonna be more ammo types down the line either. Lightning, holy, dark, maybe they'll even introduce a type that shoots a constant stream like a flamethrower. I would absolutely do a flamethrower build.

This looks so good holy the innovated the combat,the animations are nothing like i ever seen before the sound fx the VA the art direction for the mobs bosses the areas the UI the CLICK AND MOVE WASD oh and btw love the logo intro cinematic at the end this is what someone loves what their do for the craft
THAT WAS INSANE quality work there devs, WASD and and movement during skills are huge plus, and as usual the graphical side is just beyond awesome, especially those smoke and particles effects combined with physics impact of the skills on them....man I can't praise Alexander Sannikov enough. he is a huge asset in GGG. never let him go guys lol
This gameplay video alone ate diablol for breakfast. the game already looks very polished. very well done guys.
ps - I know the dislikes are from those neckbeards who cry about "nO GuNz iN Poe.." "TrAsh MoB tAkInG tOo lOnG to diE.." kind of stvpid f*Ks who only care about how they can flaunt their "builds" can clear screens with seizure inducing speeds on youtube. they don't care to appreciate about atmosphere, lore, or just the workmanship of the levels, enemies....these kind of people are responsible for the milking practices of blizzard and otherslike. they want to keep poe exclusive for them. fortunately GGG cares about their game being a work of art that can be simultaneously a successful business. they are going precisely the best way with the game design.
This is what I would comment if my builds were lacking clear speed.

Are you on shrooms or something? I love but the game looks like any generic 15 year old game. If this is "beyond awesome" to you, you actually never played a game with good graphics in your life before. Well the rest of your comment instantly shows me that you have actually zero experience playing ARPG's.
The team you have over there is incredible and passionate & it shows. Never change. I have high hopes for this game and your success.

Whoever was on the sound team needs a raise. The shots noises are phenomenal.
WASD movement is going to be huge for me. Besides opening new ways of playing (like moving and attacking as shown in the video) it helps me immensely. I have broken my right hand several years ago and ever since then, I couldn't playing games that rely on too many and too prices mouse movements to a satisfying degree. I either did not have the dexterity anymore or it became too painful. Thank you!

This is such a good version of this sort of crossbow/gunner class fantasy--great balance of utility-belt tool-for-every-situation-type stuff, and more action-shooter-y gameplay. Never played PoE1 but I'm gonna be day one for PoE2!
WASD movement is such a huge thing ! Thank you so much for this ! I may not seem like a huge deal ; but for me, it means I'll be able to play for hours without being too tired of the constant clicking. This is incredible.
And of course, this mercenary class seems awesome ; it's gonna be so weird to have such a gunner character

One thing they could definitely improve on though might be the UI, especially in the inventory.
Yeah the UI is too disgusting still. But that is something that can come at the very end of development.

I never really got hardcore into POE 1 that much sadly, I wanted to, I really wanted to love and enjoy it, but now I know what I was missing, as a Gamer, getting older is a part of life now, and reactions ain't what they used to be. And just like this, with that WASD-Movement, you've cured my problem! I'm going head-first into POE2 when it releases! Probs gonna call in tha Boyz as well, see if we can have fun together!

in the process of learning how to program and studying game design i forgot what games i really wanted to make, and i felt a bit lost lately, but this video reminded me... i wanted everything to react with each other. shooting the ground with ice spells to create crystals that act as walls, but can also be exploded. throwing out grenades with a long fuse, but being able to trigger them with fire or other explosions. creating these kinds of dynamic reactions is what i wanted to make from the very beginning.

I hope they keep some of the interchangeability between classes. Witches with two handed axes and mauls, and barbarians with wands were some of what made PoE1 unique. Builds could be so diverse in that game. I hope we can play a spell slinging or axe wielding merc as well as an xbow. And i hope other classes can use the much wished for xbow as well.
they stated this many times, we can rest assure that this is still PoE we love. I will play Templar with my zombie gang when it's out
This trailer just showed your classes swapping between crossbows, but what if you can have a differnt weapon as your secondary? I could see some nuts combinations.. Why use an armor piercing shotgun when you can use a spear? Imagine using your crossbow to make an icewall and then shattering it with a club. Or perhaps you can pepper enemies with an automatic crossbow before closing in with a dagger. Or perhaps you want to use icewalls so that you can play defense with your bow an arrow (remember bows do not fire instantly like crossbows) Maybe you just want to get up close and personal with a shotgun and a sword. Or maybe you can be like a wacky gun mage with a grenade launcher and a wand.

WASD feature was implemented in Inquisitor Martyr ARPG and it did wonders, i am glad the devs are picking the good stuff and implementing it in the game :)
