    FIRST!
    Hey, thank you so much for watching this long-ass video!
    I worked a long time on this project. Most of the gameplay was recorded within the first 7 days of release. The script was based on that playthrough. Long into production the first patch was released and I had to change or add stuff. Then when I thought I was finished the second patch came around and I had to change things yet again. I'm aware that I didn't cover everything from the patches. I've read all of the patch notes but decided not to include everything here - or else this video would never have been finished. More patches will keep coming and this video will probably be outdated sooner than I'd like - but that's just the way it is. I'm just happy to finally release it for you guys and gals to see.
    I hope you enjoy the video even if you don't agree with my ranking. Please tell me your ranking below :)

    Used to hate London levels in PS1 because it was so dark. But now, I just love them because of the lights they put around the stages and makes things brighter.

      @ppgranja3 Před 3 měsíci +6

      Same! I believe most people played TR3 on the PS1, hence the reason it is almost always ranked so low on most gamer's list. After beating TR3 a few times through the remastered version, I fell in love with the whole game (including the London levels!)

    • @Cafeman_2D
      @Cafeman_2D Před 3 měsíci +5

      I agree. I never finished TR3 on Playstation, couldn't remember why. But comparing old vs remastered visuals, I saw how stupidly dark a lot of London used to be, and now I've been enjoying the London stuff. Well not so much Auldwich and it's confusing labyrinths. 😂

    Using Seraph to open that tiny wooden door in Tibet will never be not funny. Lara travelled to Venice, the oil rig, the wreck of Maria Doria evaded massive eels, survived a plane crash, and it was all for that tiny door. That really brings down the experience for me. I often wondered if the devs wanted to troll the players a bit. I mean just before reaching that area we had to open that large golden door using the prayer wheels, so the technology to implement larger doors was definitely there.

    • @peachesandcream22
      @peachesandcream22 Před měsícem

      I played TR2 on emulator and I got a bug that I couldn't plug in Seraph after putting all prayer wheels on their places. Lara just refused to do it! I was soooo mad I just gave up and rage quitted the game. Luckily, I didn't get the same bug when Remastered came out.

    10. Nevada Desert (Feels very relaxing to play somehow, and for all the right reasons)
    9. Furnace of The Gods (The best expansion level by a country mile)
    8. Palace Midas (Love how the level wraps in on itself, and is filled with cool puzzles and platforming)
    7. Barkhang Monetary (Would have been higher, but it's way too easy to accidentally shoot the monks)
    6. RX Tech Mines (I didn't mind the minecarts oddly enough, which allowed the rest of the level to shine)
    5. Crash Site (Great mix of everything)
    4. Obelisk of Khamoon (Easily the level we'd disagree the most on)
    3. Atlantis (A very satisfying ascent, excellent setting and combat I actually enjoyed makes it TR1's finest)
    2. Madubu Gorge (I am amongst the fabled kayak fans you mentioned! Similar to RX Tech Mines, I didn't mind the parts that brought the level down for most people)
    1. Temple of Xian (You know it's something special that after a long and gruelling challenge, the thing I wanted to do right after was to do it all again)
    Most hated is Aldwych. Even once you know where to go and what to do, it's devoid of fun moments. Temple Ruins would be #11.

    I've been watching your videos on Tomb Raider recently and it's been the best look at classic Tomb Raider. I remember playing some Tomb Raider on an old demo disk when I was a kid but I really got into Tomb Raider through the Survivor games. I've been interested in checking out the older games and started playing the remastered collection since it came out (I'm currently on The Cistern) and your videos have been helpful in understanding the mechanics and some of the more obtuse parts of the game. It's been enjoyable playing the older games while watching videos of experienced fans talking about all the details of the games.

    Sweet! I was actually hoping you'd do a video like this after seeing another channel do it a while ago. Always enjoy hearing what people actually think of all the levels since the good/bad ones are pretty evenly dispersed throughout the series.
    Madubu Gorge I have a love/hate thing with. It's beautiful and well-constructed and even the idea behind the kayak is great, but the actual controls for the dang thing ruin its use. The Hive I actually really liked because of the story flavor- I always figured Natla's army she mentions would still be lurking somewhere even with her dead, so Lara being a badass that just Rambos her way through them is pretty cool. A lot of the rooms are pretty darn nifty too. The only thing I think is actually wrong with any of the Atlantis-aligned levels is that the enemy variety is pretty low considering just how many mutants you have to kill.
    I've actually found that all the levels I outright disliked when I was younger I'm actually pretty fond of now. I think a lot of it has to do with just being able to appreciated the complicated level design. At the end of the day I don't have much negative to say about the old TR games- 2 has too many human enemies, and 3 has too many "how was I supposed to figure that out on purpose" moments. That's about it lol.
    Anyways From, good work. Look forward to the next vid.

    You just have to aim to the very left side of the edge of the exit😅

    I was worried you'd put Madubu Gorge high up as it absolutely injured my thumb getting all pickups there (like the very first time you're on kayak steering back into that crystal resulted in physical pain, and one on waterfall isn't much better). Being followed by that rolling saw trollface didn't help. XD

    I've been working on an ultimate TR ranking list of all levels ever created for every platform (including handheld & mobile, spinoffs.....Overall around 500 levels), so I'm always glad to see a list like this one and to compare it.
    The biggest difference is that I like complex levels, so naturally Aldwych is the most drastic example.
    Btw that "pointless" part of Crash Site is a result of an overlook by developers. We were not supposed to climb the plane from the ground level, but they messed up one of the slopes and made it climbable.

    I LOVED Lud's Gate with Egyptian murals back and getting all pickups without a fly mod is impossible (can glitch near Sphinx for the rest). There are several issues in remastered version tho, like crappy textures underwater making stones look organic and wrong tex on the alcove where you need to breath water (it has a bright red box in original so you know where to go).

    I havent watched the video yet (doing it now) but it safe to say that Atlantean Stronghold and The Hive are the best levels of Tomb Raider history ... :)
    Edit: Watched it now! Great video again.
    Here is my small top 5: (Temple of Xian would be in my Top 10, I really like the challenge that that level provides!)
    5. Area 51
    4. Jungle
    3. The Lost Valley
    2. St. Francis Folly
    1. Palace Midas
    Its a bit TR1 heavy, but thats because thats my favourite out of them all. That said: I really hope they remaster TR 4-6 as well, having it all in one package is really great.

    I think I agree with almost all of the appreciations of each level. London levels are a nightmare, Luds Gate is the level I got stuck forever back in 1998, had to use walkthroughs for the first time after many years. All Hallows doesn't really add anything new to the table and being a super hidden level one expects something crazier like Nightmare in Vegas. It shows that it was just some scraped level and they decided to include it anyways. That Natla's little maze at the end that you barely mentioned, I hate those 3d kind of mazes where you had to push and pull tons of blocks, even with a guide, it's so cumbersome.
    Underwater levels in TR2 are also not my favorites in general, too many levels. The Maria Doria and The Deck are sort of ok or more memorable, the other 2 just feel generic and some of the pull a switch to flood or change level architecture remind me more of the worst parts of the Egypt levels in TR1 with all the guessing of what changed. Maria Doria also has that unique puzzle with the double doors that you have to open and then close again to make a new path back in a previous room, I like that puzzle, but if you don't do it when you have the chance, you have to backtrack the entire level I think, not sure if you could go back using that roof trapdoor that opens.
    Agreed with Lost city of tinnos, being a not terrible level, but a lot of things could have been better. It has the hardest secret in the whole TR first games (1-5), has those spawning wasps that depending on the console they were infinite or just 21 (weird number), the vertical room with tons of switches was the worst.
    My take on the greece levels in TR1, I think the main reason why Cistern and Tomb of Tihocan are not as good as the previous levels, is that they look like sewers. Generic videogame sewers, you could be in Greece or any other place and it would be the same. Guess it was part of the reason of the merge they did for Anniversary with both being 1 level.
    The TR2 gold levels are a mix bag, you have the first 2 Tibet levels (alaska right ?) that are just very vanilla TR2 like, and then you have those other 2 levels with the molten gold all over the place, and that huge and incredible secret in the treetops where you go inside that lava chamber and you have to jump some tiles by looking at the roof, god I love that secret.
    I'm so glad that they only used those damn springs in Ice Palace and one part of Temple of Xian, they are so annoying and out of place in TR.
    RX Tech mines, agreed, that huge underwater section is way too much. And the cart mines, well .. if you climbed the wrong one by mistake, better to reload, it will take a ton of time to get back. I guess they were going for the Indiana Jones 2 movie feel with the carts, but it didn't really work
    ohh Madubu Gorge, I thought you were the guy with the video that ranked that level #1 in all the 3 games ! Guess not.
    TR1 gold levels are just filler to me, there are some interesting moments in all 4 levels, but nothing really outstanding, I'm just happy that there's no NG+ for those.
    I like Atlantis level, it's a cool twist on the typical Atlantis games (I always go back to my favorite game ever, Indy and the Fate of Atlantis), and the theme of climbing up the whole tower is always a favorite trope for last levels (I think popularized by original Prince of Persia, and the done again in Sands of Time)
    The mechanic of "re pick the crowbar" that you use in Antarctica is terrible, and shows how the engine was not up to par with what they wanted to do. Not sure why they didn't just add a new key inside the cabin and forget about the crowbar.
    I'm in spot #40 now, will continue later.

    Like you, TR was the first 3D game I played, and it showed me what was possible in such a game.
    My feelings about the levels now are inseparable from how I felt at the time. For this reason my favourite level is Atlantis. Standing at the bottom of that pit knowing that in order to reach the top I would have to put to use all the skills I had learned remains one of the highlights of 30+ years of gaming for me.
    Overall the sense of isolation and focus is why I love these games, no idiotic companions running around ruining things or jabbering at you over the radio.

    The Deck at #1 for me. The distance you can see on the remaster really opens up the layers of the ship. Combine that with the hull, propellers, shark lake and the concept of scaling all the way to the top of the broken funnel to get the Storage Key is immense.

    Perfect thing to unwind on a day off, thanks, GFrom :D
    I never thought about making a list for all the levels, as for a lot of them I don't have any strong feelings. There are some I find lackluster: for instance whole Unfinished Business was hard for me to get through, as first TR's platforming gets a little stale after some time because of lack of moves from later games. I was positively frustrated by the time I hit Temple of the Cat, great visuals be damned. But overally I am more of vibes person - for instance I know London gets a lot of slack, but I like how stupidly complicated it is and how it verges more into adventure than action with all stupid shit we have to do during those. I love first part od Lud's Gate and most of Aldwych. I also appreciate vertical level design from Thames Wharf's first part (and I always forget that the second part is not the next level). If I had to point out one flaw in London levels is how stupidly enormous they are. I get tired with Lud's Gate 1-hour-at-least screentime and that's coming from a person that LIKES the level, so yeah, there you have it. All Hallows is a big disappointment though - great setting, lackluster execution.
    I grew up liking Nevada more through the years. Madubu Gorge is wonderful and I am one of the lucky few that doesn't mind the kayak (although yeah, the final drop can go and f itself with its random damage). In Antarctica though I only like the beginning and portions of RT-X Mines. A lot of times I just don't bother with Lost City of Tinnos: it feels bloated, it's not fun and just not appealing in graphics area. India is peak of TR3, and I also grew more fond of Temple Ruins across the years. It just kicked my teen ass so much, especially when you didn't had a memory card, dying was more of "when" than "if". But Jungle is just so iconic and nostalgic for me, I can play it without dying with my eyes closed and it's just the quintessential TR experience for me. Also everything in The Lost Artifact is just pure gold.
    In TR2 I like Venice levels and I think that's it. Sometimes Offshore Rig is okay, sometimes it feels like a filler; sometimes I like Maria Doria, sometimes it looks like one big-ass level which parts are indistinguishable from each other and after the second one I have enough. I have similar feelings for Tibet and China, though I just don't like the final gauntlets of Temple of Xian and Floating Islands. I get that those are the final levels, they are meant to be difficult, but ten thousand traps, pitfalls and absurdly strong enemies make it a chore to play through. I usually don't moan about Tomb Raider's difficulty, but in those levels I feel devs took all their ideas for the most unfair stuff the series is known for and just packed it up with a nice ribbon on top for the grand finale. I also don't find the Golden Mask that great of an expansion, but that's just because Cold War isn't a very interesting setting for me.
    I'll admit I played TR1 only twice in my life, so I don't remember the levels that well. I am not terribly fond of Atlantis - it has great platforming but the enemies are really a pain in the ass in this game that doesn't do combat too well for such hectic encounters and they kinda suck the fun out. Everything else is great, though after playing TR2 and TR3 it's kinda hard not to think TR1 is a little too basic in its structure. So yeah, in a nutshell I am biased towards TR3 (especially Last Artifact) and I like London levels :D

    Opera House pissed me off as a kid and I actually finished it in a wrong way by doing a curved jump (discovered this shortcut all by myself out of sheer frustration). Then I just kept replaying the levels I actually liked (basically all of them except Floating Islands cuz it freaked me out lol) and ignored this one so it took a while for me to even finish it properly. However, thanks to remaster I've been thoroughly playing these games again and man, this time I actually *loved* Opera house. It was fun gameplay wise but I think the gorgeous new graphics also had to do with my enjoyment. The nighttime skybox and those outdoor lightings were so atmospheric.

    • @ghihbgyu
      @ghihbgyu Před 3 měsíci +1

      Start with TR1, since the first few levels have a low difficulty, easing you into the controls. And do play Lara's home first.
      Also, please be aware that these games require patience. Don't expect to be able to do quick and easy platforming like modern games or even many contemporary ones. To me, the slow, painstaking platforming is part of the appeal. I like how careful you have to be. I guess it puts me in 'zen' because I have to really focus my attention on it and sometimes it increases the tension quite a bit.
      I somewhat disagree with Tismeabbie that you should make heavy use of walkthroughs. There's a special feeling you get when you figure out the way forward by yourself. Maybe set a time limit or something for how often you allow yourself to use the walkthroughs.

    Wow, what a long-ass video.😲 That’s some work you did there, congrats!
    Now, I never thought about making a ranking of each level and so it’s difficult to compare my tastes with yours. What I can say is that I appreciate the levels of London much better than you. Even though the underwater passage of the Lude gate is one of the hardest and most frustrating passages in the game, I found the rest of the level to be very good, for example.
    However, many levels of TR2 would be at the bottom of the list for me, especially those of Maria Doria which really disappointed me: I was very excited about exploring a shipwreck and was disappointed to explore ugly stages that do not even remind us that we are exploring a boat. But as a general rule, I found the levels of TR2 too long and repetitive, which were repeated in addition between each level, where those of TR3 and TR1 were always unique and always tried to vary the situations so as not to annoy the players. (Although TR3 may have been a little overzealous at times, putting the majority of players out of action.🤭)
    In any case, if it is true that I never had the courage to launch the dlcs, having seen clips of the dlcs from Tomb Raider 3 convinced me to test at least those. They look super creative, too.

      It's a good thing having short levels because they don't overstay their welcome. Nothing worse coming back from a save in the middle of a level, and thinking 'right what an I supposed to do again? Where do I even go? Did I pull that lever before?'

    3:24 My personal best is 24 seconds. For entire Thames Wharf... The longer route takes about 35. That's why I am not angry how silly and sprawling the rest of the level is as at any point you can just jump to the very end either by climbing a slide to the left of starting location (safest way like on 3:40) or by jumping from the crane down (one you show at 3:43)... there's a third path trough barbed wire behind Lara's start but I couldn't do it without fly mode making her grab the ledge instead of being impaled on the barbies.
