Piazza San Marco, Venice - the world famous St. Mark's Square and fantastic views from the Campanile

- Today we visit the world-famous St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) in the center of Venice. After our tour of the square, we enjoy the beautiful view from the Campanile di San Marco, the bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica.
The heart of Venice beats in St. Mark's Square. Its origins date back to the 9th century. The Republic of Venice held its state ceremonies here and the population celebrated their festivals here. The current appearance of St. Mark's Square dates back to the 17th century. To the east, St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) and the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) border the square. The north, south and west sides are bordered by the Procuracies, former administrative buildings of the Republic of Venice. Opposite St. Mark's Basilica, the Campanile di San Marco rises into the sky. Between the bell tower and the Doge's Palace, the Piazzetta San Marco opens up to the Venice Lagoon. St. Mark's Square is the only square in the city that is called "Piazza". All other squares in the city are called “campi” (fields).
St. Mark's Square is only slightly above sea level. Flood bridges are available and in some places the water even rises from the ground. The largest and most beautiful square in the city is 175 m long and 82 m wide. We walk across the square and take in the unique atmosphere. Tourists from all over the world, Venetians, street vendors and the legendary pigeons populate the square. There are shops, cafes and restaurants under the arcades of the Prokuracies. The shops sell the famous Murano glass from the nearby island's glassblowers. Live bands play in front of the cafes and the music wafts across the square. We take a break in the famous Caffè Florian. Italy's oldest coffee house has been around since 1720. Goethe, Lord Byron and Balzac have also been here, the decor is beautiful, the coffee is good, but the pleasure doesn't come cheap.
Then it's time to visit St. Mark's Tower! At 98.6 m, the Campanile is the tallest building in Venice. The construction of the bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica began between 888 and 911. The tower has been redesigned and restored over the centuries. And in 1902 it finally collapsed! The tower was then rebuilt in the old style and inaugurated in 1912. Its five bronze bells not only served liturgical purposes, but also announced executions, for example. From the sound arcades you have a wonderful view of the lagoon city. Venice shines in the evening light. Then we see a magnificent sunset. Now if we had the tower to ourselves... But we too are part of the tourist crowd.

Wir waren ca. eine Stunde oben, weil wir den Sonnenuntergang erleben wollten. Den Termin muß man aber vorbuchen, spontan wird das selbst in der Nebensaison nichts. Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und den lieben Kommentar. 😊😊🐷
Venedig ist immer noch eine Reise wert. Zwar zerfällt die Stadt sehr langsam, aber von staatlicher Seite wird mittlerweile sehr viel für den Erhalt getan.

Der Zerfall macht gerade den Reiz der Stadt aus. Immerhin gibt es jetzt auch einen Hochwasserschutz! Ohne den hätten wir während unseres Aufenthalts das zweithöchste Hochwasser aller Zeiten erlebt. So war fast nichts zu merken! Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und den netten Kommentar! 😊😊🐷
