2018 BMW M5 vs Alpina B5 - 5 Series super-saloon showdown | Autocar

  • The BMW M5 is typically the benchmark big German superslaoon. Its twin-turbocharged engine makes all but 600bhp these days, and drives all four wheels of the hottest BMW 5-Series, to make it a crushingly capable sedan.
But, as Yoda once said: there is another. Alpina is an independent manufacturer and valued customer of BMW, and as soon as an M-car is on the horizon, so too is the Alpina version. This is the B5, equal on power with the M5 and also employing four-wheel drive, but with a very different, rather smoother and more discreet way of going about, ultimately, the same job.
Which is the best at it? We head to the overcast roads of Wales to find which of these two out-übers the other.

@Tom B. From German point of view all vehicles with combustion engine can be called "kombi", as it's simply short for " Kombinationskraftwagen" which means combination motor vehicle in English. But what we are talking about here is that some Americans or Brits don't understand each other's terminology despite all speaking English.

They are independent family run companies and they are amicable to each other, as one would, exactly as the video says. Quality businesses doing good work basically. The main difference is the sound. The M5, owing to its exhaust manifold trickery, sounds like a flat crank V8. In other words, it sounds like a four cylinder engine. The Alpina B5, on the other hand, sounds like the cross-plane V8 it is. Its delightful V8 woofle (and, higher up the rev range, V8 hammer) means it sounds miles better than the M5. On that basis alone, I'd take the Alpina in preference to the M5.

The performance is always good but like I said their exterior design could use a more aggressive touch. I watch so many of your video's and enjoy them but why do you keep playing the background music just a bit too loud. This has been commented on several times over previous videos but you obviously don't read the comments as you insist on playing the music. Great video, very insightful but ruined for my liking

No m car should be 4 wheel drive, BMW’s should be rwd that’s what people like when we pick BMW’s

There seems to be some confusion between the two cars, there is never an Alpina variant of a BMW M car, Alpina in the design phase have access to the SE spec 5 series range which is why the Alpina range has always had SE derived bodywork, the Alpina engine and drivetrain are derived from the M550xi so it uses an N63R rather then an S63M, both similar engines originating from the N63 but with fundamental differences which is why they produce torque and power differently, both cars us a ZF 8HP75 auto gearbox so the M5 might have a different gear lever but it's just a flashy gimmick really, it's naturally wider track and slightly lighter weight would always give it the edge on a twisty B road but then the Alpina was always going to be a more refined daily car and in any case I feel the M5 has lost a number of things that would truly make it an M car, true rear wheel drive and either a manual or DCT gearbox just to name a few.
The gap between an M car and a normal BMW appears to be shrinking...

At this point I rather just stick with an m550 and get the best of both, the sportiness of the m5 and the luxury of the Alpina for less money

Ok so because the Alpina is a little bit better on long road you think the Alpina is the winner ?! But the M5 is way better on track or performance driving so it's more versatile, and this is what you want from a sport saloon, this is the DNA of BMW M roadcars : versatility.
PS : the performances of the car is not only 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) and top speed, it's also 50-100 km/h, 100-200 km/h, 100-0 km/h, lap times (speed through corners, agility, precision), etc.

Hmmm, these cars are about speed, quickness and handling. I would have preferred a performance test and comparison. Why shouldn't a family luxury car have everything this M5 has? Its the perfect usable car with a great capacity to keep up and thrash a 911 RS2 and drive your family to the track in comfort. I love it. This V8 twin turbo will also be infinitably tunable too. Fast forward to the M5 Competition and now were cooking with gas :)

Hummmm. Listening to the rationale regarding the weight and handling. It's agile compared to other boats. Like a double decker bus is agile as well. It all depends on the frame of reference. A bus is more agile than the QE2 but it's still not agile !!
Actually I don't like this sort of nonsense so I won't watch it anymore. There was a point to watching back in the day when these things weighed in at less than say 1600kg but now I think that there are few BMWs that even deserve the ///M badge. The true enthusiast believers at BMW Motorsport must be pulling their hair out :(

The Alpina is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Its design differs fundamentally from that of the M5: It is a high speed cruiser for the highway, a real counterpart to the Panamera. Highest quality workmanship (lavalina leather (12,000 euros!)) combined with lowest fuel consumption! The cars are built by BMW (special parts are supplied by Alpina), the final production takes place at Alpina.
Fascinating: You can drive in the Eco mode the familly very inconspicuous and economical, in Sport + mode then with the highest comfort, very quietly with a top speed of 340 km/h. There are not a few car experts in Germany who credibly say that this Alpina B5 is one of the best cars of all times! It is difficult to compare a off-the-peg car (M5) with an Alpina.

So how much lower is the centre of gravity on that almost 2 tonne car because of this?
