So true. I took a drunk to church one time, few years back. I was blessed by how he worshipped God. I began to praise God. Next thing, the lead pastor said everyone take a seat, we are going to pray. He sat next to me and placed his hand on my shoulder, and bowed his head. As the pastor was praying this brother begins to snore quietly. I thought to myself how did he fall asleep so quick? The snoring got louder. People started to look. I asked God, can I wake him as this is embarrassing. God said no. Time passed, preacher giving the word takes the pulpit, and the snoring got even louder to a disruptive noise. I thought I better wake him up, he is going to interrupt service for all. God spoke to me right there and said. I told you no. I can speak to him while he is awake or sleeping. I dropped every effort to wake this man up. I focused on the man giving the word. Afterward he was still asleep, so I went to speak with a few people. A couple young teens came by to me and the people I was with. They said did you hear that man snoring in service. Lol? I explained to them what happened, they were shocked and there countenance changed. The man who passed out, comes over to where we were. He begins to apologize for falling asleep and then begins to degrade himself. I told him to stop, I shared what the Lord said. I told him, God gave me a new perspective this day. God can and will speak to his people how he chooses, whether they are awake or sleeping. After all scripture says, God would pour out his spirit and he would give dreams and visions, in a short paraphrase. Dreams are when we sleep, and visions are when we are awake. We need to let go of religion and begin to live like children of God, as Jesus modeled.

I attended a church like that and it was like being in an abusive relationship all over again. He has to answer to God too. That causes people to leave churches. That’s horrible.
It is one thing to speak in a general way, but to point out and name people there was way out of line. And some people have to work a lot, and by the end of the week they are dragging themselves into church. They might have a really hard time staying awake. And people can appear to be sleeping, but still be listening. We should be awake and alert, but it wasn't his place to judge the heart.

Rebuking is different than this. He was zeroing in on specific people. He was puffing up himself. Right at the start he started in on someone who fell asleep. Maybe that person worked a graveyard shift and came to church anyway. Maybe they were up all night with a sick child. Or was holding the hand of a friend going through a tough time, or was up all night in pain, or unable to sleep or had a family emergency. But they came to church anyway. They came to church to get some peace and some comfort to help them through the rest of their week but instead was held up to ridicule. The Sabbath is a day of rejuvenation and rest. Not of torture. Not of flogging. Yes, there are times when the pastor needs to rebuke the congregation. If they are being gossipy and back biting. If they are causing problems among the members. If they are being prideful and looking down on the poor. If they are using the church for business purposes (MLM). If they are not helping each other out. If people are falling for pyramid schemes or other shady practices. If they are forming cliques and leaving people out of church events. If there are crimes being committed. But when that happens you address the entire congregation. You don't single people out publicly like that. If you need to speak to someone you do it privately. Only if that person is a danger to the congregation do you let them all know - such as a rapist, a child predator, or a con man. That's not what this guy did. This is not pastoring. This is bullying. This does not change people's hearts. This makes people leave.

It is one thing to speak in a general way, but to point out and name people there was way out of line. And some people have to work a lot, and by the end of the week they are dragging themselves into church. They might have a really hard time staying awake. And people can appear to be sleeping, but still be listening. We should be awake and alert, but it wasn't his place to judge the heart.

Rebuking is different than this. He was zeroing in on specific people. He was puffing up himself.
Right at the start he started in on someone who fell asleep. Maybe that person worked a graveyard shift and came to church anyway. Maybe they were up all night with a sick child. Or was holding the hand of a friend going through a tough time, or was up all night in pain, or unable to sleep or had a family emergency. But they came to church anyway. They came to church to get some peace and some comfort to help them through the rest of their week but instead was held up to ridicule.
The Sabbath is a day of rejuvenation and rest. Not of torture. Not of flogging.
Yes, there are times when the pastor needs to rebuke the congregation. If they are being gossipy and back biting. If they are causing problems among the members. If they are being prideful and looking down on the poor. If they are using the church for business purposes (MLM). If they are not helping each other out. If people are falling for pyramid schemes or other shady practices. If they are forming cliques and leaving people out of church events. If there are crimes being committed.
But when that happens you address the entire congregation. You don't single people out publicly like that. If you need to speak to someone you do it privately. Only if that person is a danger to the congregation do you let them all know - such as a rapist, a child predator, or a con man.
That's not what this guy did. This is not pastoring. This is bullying. This does not change people's hearts. This makes people leave.

Real Christ like.... My daddy graduated from a seminary and preached and we are to be Christ like especially if you are the pastor. Jesus never humiliated anyone, fronted them out or was hateful. He was kind, understanding and defended the biggest sinners by asking he who is without fault to throw the first stone. I feel so bad for the members he attacked and any visitors there that morning.
