  • On this lovely morning, with these loud a$$ birds chirping in the background, we discuss the alternator replacement procedure on the 1999-2003 Saab 9-3!
Using my 1999 Viggen and spare b204L engine, I will guide you through the basic process of removing and installing your alternator. It will not be a full removal, but I am hoping with the car and spare engine as models, to give you a general idea of where things are and what to look for.
This is a one take shot, so I do apologize for some of my ah, um, likes, etc… I am working on it here people; same goes for the camera work, I’ll get better with time.
I also realized that I did make a mistake with regards to the Saab workshop information system website. I forgot to add the “online” portion of the web address. Here is the correct hyperlink below:
    saabwisonline.com
This has been an extremely valuable resource for confirming torque specs and general procedures. I couldn’t recommend it enough.
*The hyperlink may not be clickable at this time, because my account is still pending verification for some reason.
Nothing I show here is inherently difficult in my opinion, and I’ve been able to do most of this work myself without the workshop guides and some basic tools. For some reason, these cars get a bad rap with maintenance and people think they are hard to work on, but I find that to be just not true. I’ve worked on many other cars over the years, and in my opinion, these car require no special tools to do day-to-day, and even heavy engine and repair work. Things like removing valve seats, and certain deep engine items may require special tools (these will be comom to every machine or engine shop I’m sure), but regular maintenance and even rebuilding the engine require nothing special in my experience. Just need to know the proper specs and process and your golden!
Have to mention the following for legal reasons I suppose:
I am in no way, shape or form, sponsored by anyone in making these videos and I’m merely having fun, trying to educate others while educating myself, hoping to provide valuable content, and add to the historical archive regarding these cars. Maybe one day, this channel will have half 1 million subscribers and then we can talk about some monetization :-)
Additionally, I assume no responsibility for any damages that may occur while anyone is going through this process. I am merely a hands on DIYer with a passion for these cars. Doing your own work, you assume the responsibility, risk, and outcome of your own decisions.
Hope this helps somebody out there keep their Saab on the road. Stay Steady Saabin’ everyone

What a beautiful engine. I own 2 NG 900s and they look nothing like this! 😂

Thanks for the information bud! I had someone reach out the other day saying you could pull it from the top with the wheel turned all the way to the left! I’ve never done it that way, and I feel like on the B235 series it’s very cramped, but if others say it’s doable, I’m inclined to believe it. The 235 has that two piece style intake that pushes it back further towards the firewall which is what makes me a little bit doubtful of the clearance. Plus mine has all the braces in the way too. I’m sure on the 204 you have more room to do everything but personally, I get very frustrated when my hands get jammed in tight spaces and I can’t move them so I’d much rather prefer having some extra space. I have pulled starters from the top before, but never an alternator. Either way, appreciate the info!

Thank you for the video. Very informative, especially with the around view of the engine!
I it out through the top. For me it made all the difference to remove the bracket holding the idling pulley and the belt tensioner. (Four M8 bolts)
With that out of the way, I could effortlessly pull the alternator out through the top.
      Mine is a B205 engine however in a 2002 Saab 9-3 2.0T.
