    We are all Sony fanboys here but we need to be straight with a few things. Sony (like Apple's) main strategy is to build a camera that's always missing something in order for us to buy the next model. A6400 lacks IBIS (everybody is trying to justify this act but its unacceptable in 2019) doesn't flip and rotate to the side, A6500 didn't have flip screen has missing video profiles, A7III doesnt have a flip screen and missing playmemories, none supports 4k 60fps or 1080p 240fps. You cannot find a FF model that has the 6400 features, you cannot find an APS-C model with the FF features. Last but not least the 1080p video on 6400 is mediocre. Compared with a5100 (~300$), a6300 (~500$) which both lack IBIS does not justify the price tag to buy a gimbal and add more equipment while you vlog. We want to carry less equipment. On top of that each new model has a price tag +50% compared to new models in the past. This lack of consistency in Sony models is driving us crazy and for me personally I'm not going to upgrade until I see a model that worths the money.

    I used to rock a Sony a5100 and a6000 for weddings and events. The a5100 recorded externally to an Atomos Ninja 2 and was powered by a portable battery with a DC out. I now use a GH5, G7, and occasionally my a6000 as a third camera for 1080p only projects. Needless to say, I like not having to rely on a ton of external accessories to make my tools work reliably. On Cinema5D they raved about the improved autofocus. What I’m seeing here is not only improved battery life, but no more record limit! Combine that with a cheap usb battery and this becomes a reliable, small package. I still have some good Sony lenses so this would be a good investment later on in the year. I’m definitely eyeballing it as a b/c cam to the GH5 and as a good gimbal camera as well.

    [ 📢 EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ] A6400 is much more better camera than A6300 & A6500 because:
    1. No 30 minutes record limit: A6300 &A6500 will not get this update do the old tax issue,
    2. No overheat (better image processor) like A6300/A6500,
    3. Longer battery life 1 hour 30 minutes,
    4. Image process from A9 = amazing fast AF better than A6300/A6500,
    5. TIME LAPSE build in,
    6. Full Flip Screen,
    7. A6500 has got IBIS but in video in motion is very bad - you need gimbal and without it you get better price for A6400 $899 (A6400 + gimbal = a bit more than A6500 price),
    8. New Hight Dynamic Range picture profile,
    9. 2 New AF engines that are only in A6400 - old cameras don't have this (you need this new image processor),
    10. Better build in microphone at the front - it offer very nice audio if you are not in wind area,
    11. Support for higher iSO,
    12. During recording screen doesn't dim.
    Summarizing: A6400 is better than A6300/A6500 in everthing 😊

    When shooting video and showing the actual ISO in auto-ISO mode is just plain cool! This is something that I wish panasonic did. Also, I assume that it can shoot auto-ISO in manual mode? This is something that my panasonic's can't do either and I always wanted that. This is pretty exciting stuff. Also it looks like the on screen display stays on all the time which is huge to me. With my panasonic's they always blank after 1 minute which is just plain stupid. So I constantly am fiddling with tapping the screen to see what the settings are. Doing this always risks shaking and changing a setting whilst shooting. Thanks for video.

    Max great videos so thanks so much for the amazing content. Tonight I watched two of your videos and they were incredibly relevant to me. I own a medical clinic and will be beginning a series of educational videos as well as podcasts with local health related professionals. I currently have a Sony a6400, a Canon M50 and two Samsung phones. I am returning the Canon M50 as the quality in 4k wasn't close to the Sony. As most of my footage will be stable I think I can get away with a6400. I like a 3 camera setup for multiple angles during the educational videos (I have some trials posted) as well as the podcasts. Do you think it's smart to use all a6400? I prefer not to go much higher price wise. Also I saw your video on IMac video editing. I am considering to upgrade to the iMac w 8core i9 and upgraded graphics chip and will upgrade the RAM myself. Will I be able to edit hour plus long videos from 3 cameras? Am what I am doing overkill? I have even thought of still using the Samsung 10+ as additional angles. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I will most likely be purchasing all of the above w/in the next day or two. Thanks.

    Thanks, Max! I get the impression that the a6500 is better for photography (except fast moving birds or sports) due to its grip and IBIS, and that the a6400 is better for video due to its superior, tracking, cooling, video record length, and lower Slog2 minimum ISO. Does that sound fair?

  • @anacepeda4079
    @anacepeda4079 Před 5 lety +1

    Hi Max! Thanks for this video, it is excellent. Still, it is hard to choose between the two cameras without trying them on (of course) so, here I come with my doubts. I'm a beginner at making video and I am trying to choose between these two cameras.
    I love filming sports and for that I think the AF is extremely important but I was wondering...Is it the AF from a6500 really different from the a6400? I would require a camera to go around sport guys and focus them almost instantaneously...so does the a6500 works for me?
    I would prefer the a6400 because it lasts longer in battery and has a couple of new features that are really awesome (also it is cheaper), the problem is that no IBIS is killing me! I want to ask you if this is a big problem, I do not intend to vlog, just to do some cinematic footage and I was wondering if by holding it with my hands without walking (to film objects in motion, standing still), if the problem is still too big, or if it can be corrected after filming with software stabilization? Is there any other way to avoid this IBIS problem?
    Sorry for the large text. In a general idea, here's my type of video style:
    - I love filming with higher zoom (I intend to buy a 55-210mm E-mount lens for that) - I'm worried about the IBIS problem for that because it becomes heavier. Still I only intend to use that zoom with a tripod. With the use of tripod, will the IBIS still be a problem (because of wind and stuff)?
    - I love filming sports (go after people and standing still with a tripod)
    - I love filming objects in motion without the need of a tripod - just walking in the street and filming things..
    - I do not intend to vlog.
    I hope you can help me. I know it's a lot to process but I'm really struggling on finding the best camera for me!
    Thank you so much for your help. I really aprecciate it!

I am a vlogger, love doing cinematics, walk in many of my vlogs, should I buy a 6500 or get a 6400 with a gimble... and which gimble should I buy .. I am thinking of something lightweight, not too big , easy to handle. Thanks alot in advance for your help.

    Initially, everybody felt disappointed by a6400, but except lack of IBIS, it is a better camera than any a6000 series cameras. Even after firmware update, a6500 will not have AF performance of a6400 because it doesn't have a9 hardware unlike a6400. For videographers, a6400 is an exceptional choice not a good deal or budget deal.

I've been contemplating getting either the A6500 or now the A6400 because mostly touch focus. Do you think it is worth the upgrade to go to that or just use some money to further invest into other lenses? I also do have a gimbal as well so IBIS isn't totally necessary. Great informative video.. straight to the point. The bottom line is.. if you've got a 6300 or 6500 already i don't think anyone should buy this camera or even 6600.. you've got the same camera.. more or less you'll get the same results. Depends what you need it for? If you want to raise your work to more pro level wait little bit.. invest in FF and maybe get the A7III when price will drop. For vloging, by my opinion is not worth.
    OR... if the money is not a problem, do whatever you want. :-) if it's your fetish, every year buy new sony aps-c sensor camera and make a collection.

      Picture profiles yes, video quality is close. You’ll get slightly worse dynamic range (but still good and better than any canon DSLR or Mirrorless) and as far as lowlight it won’t be as good since it’s a smaller sensor but still very good and better than the 5D IV, EOS R, EOS RP in 4K. The colors will be the same or slightly better than a7iii because of tweaks and the autofocus will also be better and easier to use.

    The stars told me, that when a6700 or a7000 will come out, the price will be 1500
    600$ for IBIS, I don't know, besides no IBIS in a6400, its basically better camera than a6500, overall improvement I would say
    Don't understand why people hating this camera for lacking the IBIS, basically typical comment is "Lack of IBIS is a no go for me, never gonna buy it" For example Nikon d850 and canon 5D Mark IV do not have IBIS as well, and people still buy them, maybe not for the video, but still

    • @MichaelKefeder
      @MichaelKefeder Před 5 lety +3

      I would think the a6500 successor will also have a much larger buffer for high framerate photo shooting and other technical improvements, it will not just be IBIS. However I agree with you, it'll depend on the persons needs if the $600 upgrade is worth it to them, the a6400 is a great camera already - especially for the price+size (a7000 is rumored to be A7 body sized).

    • @RedDeivid
      @RedDeivid Před 5 lety +4

      Okay, but there are more things to get into the equation, if you are a hybrid shooter, and low light performance. Nobody has said that the a6400 is supposed to be a bit worse than the a6500 on ISO performance, add to that the lack of ibis, if you are for example a street photographer or a concert photographer that's the difference between being able to shoot on a f4 lens or not. Also is the difference between vlogging with the super sharp and marvelous Sigma 16mm f1.4 or the not that worth for the money 10-18mm f4 OSS.
      Also, I really love the new sony colors, and I'm envious about not having them with an update to my a6500. hahahahaha
      The a7000/6700 should have a new sensor and a new body at least and being around 1.500€ to be a no brainer to go. Remember that Fuji is right now the king of APS-C in profesional line ups, while the a6400 is a frankenstein of the a6300, a9 and the a6500, same buffer as the a6500, same body as the 6300 same sensor as the 6x line and the new processor.
      If sony want to have any chance to sell any new apse they should go for a really mind-blowing camera as it was the A7III, like 60p 4k, 240p at 1080p and some new features about photography, cuz I mainly work with my a6500 for photography and I love it... but damn, I need more buttons and some options that other brands offer but sony.

    I have the a6400 and unless if u own one. Don't hate on it just because it doesn't have IBIS. The Sony a6500 IBIS isn't that great. I use steady shot lens and it helps reduce shaky footage plus I have a zhiyun weebil lab. Unless you're making professional videos you don't need a gimbal and the a6400 has a brighter screen than the a6500 in daylight. You can make your shots steady with a tripod or even using your camera strap. As a content creator you have to use your imagination. If you are deciding which one to get it's up to you but the a6400 has not done me wrong yet. Also the auto focus is faster in the a6400. I tested it and it even holds up against the 7 series.

Its nice that the 6400 do not have a time limit but the battery is not trustful that will make it for a filming so long. I feel because the 2nd camera would be mounted on tripod for majority of the wedding, that if I went with the A6400, the lack of IBIS wouldn't affect me much, along with the benefit of having videos that can go over 30min, which is helpful in weddings, like Max said.
