    Slight tangent to what you're talking about here, but I've had an idea for a manager's gimmick for a while. An 'Image Consultant'. They get 'hired' by a wrestler, try a handful of new ideas over the course of a month or so until something sticks. The manager hangs around for another couple months, perfecting the new look/attitude/whatever of their client, then they move on to someone else. It gives an kayfabe reason for someone to discover their heritage, or drop a comedic act, or change their ring-name. Whatever.
    It'd be a lot better than the current standard of 'This wrestler you know is now going by a different name. Accept it.'

    2:45 Totally agree, and WWE did that for many years. They would basically just have a list of gimmicks and randomly give them to talent coming in. That last part is the problem. You can have a list of gimmick ideas, nothing wrong with that, but you can't just randomly pass them out to people. A guy doesn't even have to have a gimmick, and most of the time it's better if he doesn't. Just take a guys real life personality and turn the volume up, then he becomes a character and hopefully a star.

    • @AfricanHeavyMetalGuy
      @AfricanHeavyMetalGuy Před 8 měsíci

      And that's why there is no fun in wrestling anymore. Gummicks are what put wrestling on the map. Not all gimmicks should be about a wrestler' personality or life or whatever.

    • @JMFSpike
      @JMFSpike Před 8 měsíci

      @@AfricanHeavyMetalGuy I'm not against gimmicks, as long the gimmick can be pulled off well by whichever wrestler is using it. I don't think a lot of gimmicks is a good thing though, because then it's basically a circus. It'd be great for kids, but it won't appeal to most adults and even most teenagers. Why do you think the then WWF's popularity started tanking in the early 90's? It was because those kids started growing up and that goofy cartoon stuff (although very well done) was just not as cool anymore. They grew tired of it and wanted something a bit more serious and edgy, which they eventually got.

      And just the same why so many promotions suddenly found their end between 1991 and 1994. They weren't affected by the gimmick wrestlers of the WWF, but they sure as hell were affected by the extremely negative reputation, the wrestling business as a whole had gotten.

      Yes gimmick was the most over babyface gimmick since Austin's Stonecold gimmick in Attitude era. No babyface since Austin was even close to being as over with the crowd as Bryan was during the Yes movement.
      Forget about Young Vince, the Older Vince didn't wanna push Bryan either, it was the constant fans reaction that forced him to do so kicking & screaming.
      Fans were hijacking shows, PPVs, segments chanting for Bryan & asking for his push.
      It was Bryan's popularity which made fans turn on Batista at Rumble, heck they booed Rey Mysterio out of the building for being no 30. One can go watch, title unification match segment between Cena & Orton with legends & former champs in the ring was completely hijacked by fans chanting for Bryan to the point it embarrassed the company.
      Vince wanted to do freaking Bootista vs Orton in WM 30 mainevent, something that barely anyone wanted to see. It was the fans that forced Vince to push Bryan to mainevent of WrestleMania.
      Also young Vince pushed HBK, another small guy, he would have pushed Bryan then.

It's not goofy like a wrestling country singer or a wrestling tax man, a garbage man wrestling on the side is completely plausible. It's not going to main event anything, but it's fine for getting the crowd going in the first hour of the show.

      @@ryandavis4448It was a good gimmick from the mid 90s. Unfortunately Spivey was not in the best physical shape at that point of his career and just as the gimmick started to pick up a little steam Spivey retired.
      I've always thought there was a missed opportunity to link the original incarnation of Bray Wyatt to Waylon Mercy. In many ways the original incarnation of Bray Wyatt was an updated version of Waylon Mercy.

    I don't see how one way is better then the other? I think it comes down to circumstances. McMahon came up with bunches of ideas and some worked and some didn't. At same time somethings come naturally out of a wrestler and develop. When it comes to creative if you are batting better then 50% you are doing great. Sure its probably better that it come somewhat naturally out of the wrestler because then he or she is more likely to develop it better and have it become part of them. Like The Rock or Steve Austin. In the case of The Undertaker, Mark should be glad Vince created it cause it sent him to the bank with a ton of money. What would Mark have been without that creative...good question. Guidance along the way is almost as important. But I agree that 100% scripting is not the best way to go at all.

    It's less about the gimmick and more about the execution of it. Stone Cold Steve Austin's gimmick would fall flat if done by a lesser performer. Similarly the Undertaker's gimmick sounds stupid on paper. Crow Sting was the right performer, right place and right time. So on and so forth.

    All the Gimmicks are so lame. Thats why the Attitude Era, Hogan WWF Era and Ruthless Aggression era absolutely sucks. CM Punk exposed the wrestlers from those eras and thats why he is the BEST in the world. CM Punk is what a real wrestler looks like and im glad you agree Jim Cornette.

      CM Punk is just a fake Stone Cold Steve Austin wannabe. And he's terrible at it.
