    This may come off as a strange comment, but I prefer to hear the sound of the tools working without the music overlay. (It's good music, don't get me wrong.) I just enjoy hearing the natural sounds clearly that come with the trade.

      I was just about to comment this. Love it regardless, but the music is jarring on a repair video. I wanna hear the tools and the sounds of adjustment. Music can be for intro and outro.

    I have always been fascinated by brass instrument repair and modifications being a horn player. I got to watch Walter Lawson work on my horn several times before he passed and was amazed at all the homemade gizmos he had available for all sorts of things. Love watching your videos.

    You can buy what's called a barrel lap. They are made of brass as well and they have an adjustment screw in them so you can adjust much like you're doing. They come in a variety of different sizes. They are typcially used for lapping bushings however it would also work great in the application.

    Gonna have to use this in the future. Did a Strad third slide with the same problem a few weeks ago. Ended up making new tubes for it instead.

    Nice repair. Is the screwdriver you used French with an 'x' section shaft? I've got one and I've never seen another.

    How would you go about the opposite procedure? Like, narrowing the diameter of the slide if it were too large?

  • @donkultgen4643
    @donkultgen4643 Před rokem

    What force is applied to the slide when running it on/off the mandrel? Is it held perfectly straight or is there some off axis torque applied?

  • @meistudiony
    @meistudiony Před rokem +1

    What causes this? A dent or bend is obvious but what would cause a slide to “shrink”?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass Před rokem +1

      On some vintage and well-used horns, slides can sometimes be buffed or sanded too far down, such that the internal diameter is of course still the same, but the outer has had a decent chunk of metal shaved off.

    How does this sort of thing happen? Is it the tube getting compressed or worn out over time, or was this an undersized replacement slide?

    • @jstep4146
      @jstep4146 Před rokem

      I think maybe those students play with the tuning slide without lube too much. Maybe they should have gotten a trombone instead, eh?

  • @scotttait2197
    @scotttait2197 Před rokem

    So that thing you made from brass stock , could be called a reemer or rotating mandrel??

    • @ydonl
      @ydonl Před rokem

      Hm... yeah! I guess it's not a reamer, because it doesn't cut. It's definitely "expanding", but an expanding what? Mandrel does make some sense... hm....

  • @MathieuPilote
    @MathieuPilote Před rokem

    The music is a nice very touch, but way too loud, especially when it's over you talking. A bit quieter and it would be perfect!
