  • Trumpets and other valved brass instruments commonly have issues with the alignment of their valves that prevent them from playing their best. In this video. Brett and John from Bob Reeves Brass explain some common causes on how valves become mis-aligned, how mis-aligned valves can make trumpet playing more difficult, and how Bob Reeves Brass's patented valve alignment can improve the performance of any valved brass instrument.
    Instruments that we have aligned include: Bb trumpets, C trumpets, D/Eb trumpets, piccolo trumpets, cornets, flugelhorns, valve trombones, tubas, sousaphones, alto horns, bass trumpets, contra bass trumpets, flugabones, and many others.

    With the right small light that can shine into the tubing and a small mirror and the right measuring tool it is really easy to do this yourself.
    You also need some sets of good pads with different thickness and also thin plastic "washers" so that you can do the fine-tuning.
    I always have done this myself with perfect results and never had any of the problems described in the video.

    it's easy to have a "take" on this... and of course opinions vary. But consider the decades long research and experience Bob Reeves (himself) undertook, collaborating with Bill Cardwell, Carrol Purviance, and dealing with the who's who of elite trumpet players. Bob passed all this to John and Brett. Whatever you think you know, I suggest it is very prudent to simply trust in these guys - impeccable integrity, highest standards, and "THE" knowledge. Let them dial in your gear and off you go - KS.

    This makes so much sense! My 1974 Getzen Doc Severisen always felt stuffy. Very annoying. I sold it when I stopped playing due to a lip problem. I’m back at it now. I have a Getzen 700S, same stuffy feeling. I will be calling you.

    Then there is rotational alignment and there are 4 holes in each valve and the ports that could all be off by different amounts.

    Have one ever measured the difference of sound and an air flow due 0.1mm misalignment?
    I'd love to see that numbers. And I personally don't think anyone can really feel that, not talking about hearing. Our ears just not capable 😉.
    Will be glad to see the proof (measured numbers) if I'm wrong.

    • @bobreevesbrass
      @bobreevesbrass  Před rokem +1

      Just to start, air flow has nothing to do with the valve alignment as the trumpet is an acoustic instrument. How the trumpet plays has to do with the vibration of the air inside. Have you seen our video about the no air flow mouthpiece we made? Misalignment of the valves causes a change in bore size entering and exiting each valve. 0.1mm or .004" on a Bb trumpet is about the smallest difference perceptive players will feel. In our experience there are certainly players that can feel and hear these differences. When the numbers start to get around .008" or 0.2mm even younger players will be able to tell a difference. As far as making recordings to compare the sound, it would be possible but very difficult to do. In differences that small it would have to be with a very controlled room and musician. The reality is that most trumpets are not out of alignment 0.1mm. Most trumpets we see are in the .010" to .040" (0.25mm to 1mm) range of misalignment, which has a significant affect on how the trumpet plays, and we commonly see misalignment numbers that are greater than that.

    I have a Getzen Super Deluxe from about 1956 and I've calculated that I'd need downstroke pads of a thickness of .085" and upstrokes .0645" thick. They'd be so thin though that they wouldn't be very quiet at all. Not sure how I could increase these thicknesses

    Hi guys I have a Bach Strad that I would like to do alignment on. Ive had the horn for around 18 years. The problem is that I live in Malaysia. Is it possible for me to but the components from you and get a tech here to do it for me me or even do it myself?

      Hello, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately we only do alignments at our shop in California or when we are travelling on the road. We typically visit a few places in the US each year and one or two international trips as well. If you can't catch us when we are travelling, you can always ship your trumpet to us to have the alignment done.

    • @bobreevesbrass
      @bobreevesbrass  Před rokem

      You can order just the pads if we've aligned the horn already. Just replacing the pads will not align the horn and will likely make it worse.

    Imagine Louis Armstrong entering this shop for a valve alignment. I mean there is some truth to misalignment playing worse but stating that replacing the pad material for yours is going to fix you up for a lifetime... Pretty sure a good cleaning makes more difference ;)

    • @bobreevesbrass
      @bobreevesbrass  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for your insightful comment. While we haven't done an alignment for Louis Armstrong, Bob did make mouthpieces for him! We're not saying that the valve alignment will solve every problem for the rest of your life. What we do see on a daily basis is players having to compensate for misaligned valves. We have done alignments for Harry James, Doc Severinsen, Arturo Sandoval, Håkan Hardenberger, among thousands of others. While we don't claim to have made any of them the musicians they are, we are proud to have worked with them and hopefully helped them along the way.

      @@bobreevesbrass That's good to hear. As much as I liked the info from the video, I did think a slight relativization was in order. Seems to me too often we blame our instruments or mouthpiece, instead of going the extra mile in practice. Taking my comment as graceful as you did raises my value in your opinion though, so thanks for taking the time to come back ;)

    • @bobreevesbrass
      @bobreevesbrass  Před rokem +1

      @@ibendiben That's a great mindset to have. There are certainly players that blame everything on their equipment and ignore fundamentals. There are also players that blame everything on themselves and ignore their equipment. In our experience, the most successful players combine solid fundamentals with equipment that helps them with their musical journey.

    I just sold a lemon Bach Stradivarius to a music shop.It was a 190 37 Stradivarius. It was stuffy.The horn was a new left over. It was a job to play it. It must have been valve alignment .Never buy a horn on line. Play it first.It was a 50th anniversary!
