    Awesome video. I am glad we are finally getting some good video demos of speakers. I personally hate the v30s upper mids. I found that I really like the gov's less in your face high end. I have 2 of them paired with the stock celestion v60s that come in the ENGL standard cab. I am not doing much recording so I care more about in the room, which is obviously pretty different then what the mic is picking up.

    Watching from rural America. I like your methodical approach, especially the points systems you use in guitar reviews. To my ears the vintage 30’s high end response is preferable. The difference was surprising. I play mostly blues and classic rock.

    Best comparison video on CZcams. The only thing I would change is something you touched on in the video which is a room mic to get a better idea of how it sounds in the room. It may be possible to do open and closed back comparison also but that seems like it would be overkill.

    Nice comparison. Definitely different. I have a stack with Governor16 and The Wizard16 X pattern in each cab. I do notice the thicker bottom end on the Eminences. A little Tight and Presence settings on my Friedman BE-OD puts it right on-par with the Celestion when I want it, which isn't very often.

    Great video, man. I thought (hoped) they were more similar. The Eminence sounds like it needs quite a lot of break-in time.

  • @relevantinformation6655

    I have a rather different question. That is, how do you like that cab?
    I use Celestion golds alnico 10-inch in my smaller amps. As for the the marshal cabs - they are stock, running two half stacks in stereo at 200 ridiculous watts. I like playing the smaller cabs, as you don’t need an army to haul them and they are “wife friendly” volume wise. I’ve just thought these are great speakers - but are there better cabs. I noticed this wasn’t front ported for the 12’s - is it open back or ??
    Anyway, what are your thoughts on that cab as it looks fairly easy to swap around speakers. - Great job 👍

    Hey buddy, Thank you for this video comparison I am going to customize my Mesa Boogie and your comments at the end of the video on the sound in the room means more then what I heard in the recording. I will go for the Eminence Governor since my boogie has an open back my Vox has a closed back with two vintage 30’s and I agree that the Celestion speakers sound awesome with a closed back. You saved me much toil trying to figure out what my choice will be. I play two electric guitars out of my eleven, I play a 1988 custom showcase Les Paul and a DIY telecaster I build two years ago. My favorite pedal is NUX Mod Core it get looped through the back of my boogie and it eliminates the two rack units I have connected to my Mac. • @geronimostade8279
    @geronimostade8279 Před rokem +1

    The formular is relatively simple. Especially on high gain the V30 cuts through the mix when you have like two guitars. It is just voiced more present. The governor is more on the belly site of things. Both are kick ass speakers. I have two closed back cabinets mid sized one with v30 and one with governors and it might sound stupid but i prefer the governor for high gains and the voicing of the V30s for clean tones.
    In the end the mic positions has alot of impact on the tone. You will find a more present spot on the governor as well.

    @PeekaPeep Před 2 lety +4

    You had me sold on the Governor the moment you said it responded far better out of an open-back cabinet than that China-made Vintage 30 did in your comp test. That's EXACTLY the kind of speaker I was looking for to swap out the stock one on my Orange CR60C with since that combo amp has a semi-closed back design. Also looked at the Creambacks as well, but they don't really compare to the Eminence Red Coat line in the price/value ratio dept when it comes down to it...

Can't go wrong there, just make sure you get the right Ohm version (16) for it. Just move the mic.. Maybe away from the dustcap...
      If anyone is worried about room sound, the best way to gauge this is probably with an omni mic, net the speaker, but not necessarily dead center to the cone and in the grill... Just enough to hear a good balance of the room and speaker... But then again, every room will sound a little different. 😂

    I have both of these speakers! The vintage 30 is in a bugera v55 combo amp and the governor is in a 212 cabinet matched with a Texas heat. The vintage 30 is probably not the best match for the bugera 6l6 amplifier it can get very ice picky even though I've played through it for about 4 years now. The Eminence governor just sounds wonderful matched with the Texas heat really pushes air and just sounds great in a lopo line closed back 2x12 cabinet.
    I can tell you that the vintage 30 does sound a lot better after it gets broken in but you have to realize it's a very efficient speaker and can get very loud and sometimes ice picky if you're playing through the wrong amp or a very bright guitar. The the vintage 30 would be a better match with the bugera v22 which has el84 tubes and is a little less bright. I have a cannabis Rex in the bugera v22 and it just sounds fantastic so I'm going to leave it.
    I'll probably wind up putting a higher watt speaker in the v55 I think the 70 watt Eminence legend would be a good match.
    Bottom line is they're both good speakers you just have to match them with the right amplifier and guitar.

  • @Voodoo66Chile
    @Voodoo66Chile Před rokem +6

    Really nice comparison but I always feel videos like this should also demonstrate how close the speakers can be dialed in, as in sounding alike or just dialed into their best sound. Changing speakers without changing the EQ is good for demonstrating the initial differences but can sometimes make one speaker sound better or worse than the other unfairly. In the recording the Governor sounded flat, muffled and boring while the V30 sounds sharp, bright and forward but I don't doubt the V30 could be dialed back alittle and vice versa for the Governer. Do a series of test with the same EQ and settings for each speaker for the baseline difference and then a second series of test where you dial in each speaker to where you think it sounds best.
    Just my perspective as this was an excellent demonstration but as with most I feel there is some dynamics not being addressed.
    Anyways, great video! Thanks!

    The V30 sounds obviously more familiar.
    That's why cab IRs have revolutionized home recording. Now we have hundreds and hundreds of cabinets and mics to choose from, for little to no money.

      @@MaxSoloMusic Yeah, I remember you pointing that out in the video. It depends on what priorities someone has, I guess: do they care more about how it sounds when they're playing or how it records with the mic they have.
      Nonetheless, it was a great demo and thank you for your meticulousness.

    Governor is warmer, with earlier break up, would probably be really good in a bigger blackplate Fender, or give some snarl to them...
    But I'ts mere speculation on my part, I'd love to hear it.
    As for the Vintage 30, it's brighter, more detailed, less full, more cutting... the Chinese made version always feels a little more as if those qualities (or flaws..?) are a bit less balanced, a bit less refined. But maybe that's just me..?

    Governor прозвучал как будто у него насморк. Интересно что вживую результат был не такой как на записи, возможно подход со строгой фиксацией положения микрофонов не очень хорошо работает для сравнения динамиков, и лучше для каждого динамика искать своё, лучше для него положение.

    the filler music you add between speaker changes *DESTROYS* any possibility of comparison. Ear memory is very short and easily lost. Sorry. Until then it looked like a serious test. EDIT: ok, kept listening, you corrected that. Eminence in theory are Celestion clones, copying voice coil, magnets, cone, etc. but somehow never reach the Celestion openness. Eminence was dark-muddy while Celestion was bold and forward sounding. You find it "buzzy fuzzy" because you are alone in a silent room ; but in a live sound situation, with Club acoustics, the full band playing, specially the drummer, Celestion cuts through while Eminence does not,or much less. Full sound test is within a band situation. Nobody will ever listen at it with his ear 2 inches away from cone ... where those microphones are.

    Holy cow. I would like to hear this redone after 150hrs of abuse per each element. Would the governor open up and be less muffled. Atleast v30 will mellow over time, in here it’s razor sharp and like you said, unpleasant. Both will work for something that’s for sure. Well excecuted comparison.

    Звучание.. Это такая неоднозначная тема, всё так относительно. Вот, скажем есть у меня старая гитара и новая. Старая приятно звучит в живую на том же 30-ом, мне нравится, но в линию писать её плохо, мутная, разве что бэком. А новая тоже хороша, но как на мой вкус, много выхлопа вживую, режет. Зато в линию писать самое то. Так и с этими динамиками. В этом тесте Винтэч конечно был стабильнее.

    Iv finally decided I much prefer celestion voicing. The thing is I always was concerned with cutting in a mix but to be honest even with t75 celestions I can cut in a mix and they are known for being scooped.
    The big thing is more mids on the lower end gives us guitarists a knee jerk reaction, “wow that sounds filler and more present without being shrill”
    That isn’t some magical thing though, that is the nature of that frequency. You’re not getting celestion character punchyness with any darker mid speaker . Just like a guitarist can’t make a humbucker sound like a p90.
    So if the worry is to cut better in a mix you’d have to ask “what makes me cut better in a mix?” . A lot of low mids is where vocals and bass would sit. On its own it sounds good tho. However it’s smart to leave those mids more open so that you don’t have to blast everything to compensate but can play at reasonable playing volumes on everyone’s part and still be totally clear and loud enough .
    Another real issue which solidified my position on celestions is this . Punchiness . I noticed that you cannot get real expressiveness or punchyness from lower mid dominated setups.
    Mostly low mid is a kid easier on the ears at times . But, it’s stiff. Playing riffs and digging into the guitar strings wont give you a high end punch that sounds 3D. It will just be a solid thump. It’s like playing with really thing strings.
    It’s like a fender guitars fat punchyness vs a humbucker thick flatness .
    The ideal thing is to get warmth from eqing and pickups that aren’t too top endy. And then punchy speakers . Not punchy in volume, but punchy is tone. Celestions are punchier in time because they are all scooped . Even their v30.
    This gives the guitar a slinkier and more vocal sound. It sounds like it has nuance. A more dense speaker or pickup, or strings deaden the responsiveness. It sounds stiff and thicker . That works in recording for certain parts like rythm or if you’re a rythm player then yes.
    However if you want to riff or even want your rythm to sound more dynamic and let chords bloom and cascade even with palm muting, a celestion is best.
    You can hear it here when you palm mute. That open string attack and then muting after. It has a more vocal slinkyness to it.
    Ideally I think a person can simply later different celestion speakers to get a thicker sound if they feel while retaining more of that spongey response . Once low mids are added more and more a sound will get not just warmer but less responsive . Itl respond but in a more subtle way.
    I always like a darker thicker sound but then I realize the punch and wonkyness isn’t there. I prefer a livelier vocal delivery. The warmth can be added in or chosen by varying speakers . The cut is still there .
    I have an eminence speaker amp and it has more of a thick full presence but it’s just a more bland sound and isn’t as responsive.
    Even strumming a power chords soft on a celestion with distortion and slowly getting harder, you’ll notice how much they high end blooms. Try it on an eminence speaker and you’ll see the chords opens up less. It stays very one dimensional.
    That’s what the problem is for me. I much rather have a more dynamic sound. I also use p90s though, which have a better midrange than humbuckers by far . Even with humbuckers tho, they are too hollow and less responsive than p90s, then add on ultra thick mid speakers, super stiff sound .
