  • Hey everyone! Ive got another video for you and I hope it saves you all the money!
    I priced out garage doors and they are super expensive so I found this idea, one year later and not a single scratch or chip has happened.
    YOU WILL NEED:
    Primer (optional)
    Exterior Vinyl paint
    Gel Stain
    Sponge Brushes
    Course Brush
    STEPS:
    1 - Clean your door really well and let it dry completely before you move forward.
    2 - Paint ONE layer in the vinyl paint. Don't worry if its streaky.
    3 - Apply your gel stain. Theres no real way to explain HOW to do this, but just know that you have a lot of working time so you can wipe it off and re apply it a few times until you get the look you like.
    Let me know if you have any questions! Im on here daily and I will answer them :)

    Btw your explanations are professor status. " Think about how a garage door is built." That's a very simple instruction that's going t help a lot of folks will do a much better job. I'm I professional boat builder little tip. Do not listen to the haters telling you how wrong it is to mix the 2 paints. I'm actually a professional in the auto and marine coating. I experiment all the time with different paints and making the stuff work. It's made me tons of money and I have several patents pending. Experimenting has made me the best at what I do. I'll be using your technique but using a polyester gel coat.

      Thanks so much for that! people always have negative things to say it’s been almost 2 years and there isn’t a single scratch in this door. I think that’s the best part about being an artist, mixing and figuring out new techniques.

      @dcwoodworks the bumps aren't in the paint. It's part of the door texture. Also found out that wiping it with mineral spirits caused some of the paint and stain to blend together in a much way. So, my door it a mess. I've switched to the old masters brand of wiping stain. Looking better. Just going to be a bit of a rustic wood look. I could try to send pics when I'm done

      The most important color is the “special walnut” in the gel stain brand minwax - this color is what got me this look.

      I just used the normal gel stain. I didn't even top coat it and its been two years and looks like I did it yesterday. This is why I say in the video to make sure to do it on a warm day. The sun almost baked it. I cant describe it, but I did it on another door on a wet day and it took almost a week before its wasn't tacky to the touch.
      you can also top coat it!

    • @dcwoodworks
      @dcwoodworks  Před rokem +1

      I didn’t use primer because the paint I got didn’t require it. It was exterior paint grade. So just make sure you ask the questions when your in store. If it’s red paint (like it’s been painted before) it probably doesn’t need it.
      But again. Ask when your in store it totally depends on the paint you buy. Good luck!! This will so such a nice upgrade for selling!

    We are thinking about paining out white vinyl fence. What are the color and brands you used on your garage project? Also when applying the gel stain did you only use a brush stroke? Sometimes it looks like it had a lot of coverage and other times more of a paint stroke. I’m trying to figure out what stroke you used as the last to achieve the wood grain look. You did an excellent job.

    • @dcwoodworks
      @dcwoodworks  Před 10 měsíci

      Thats a great idea! I used pumpkin seed by Sico paints for the base (any cream color base will do) and Walnut gel stain by minwax (varathane is great too!).
      If you listen again (sometimes I watch videos with no sound) I explain how I did it. Essentially I put it on too thick at first and then wiped it off and started over. Try a test piece first.

    I'm confused by your identification of the base coat as being a "vinyl" paint. Is this a latex paint used to cover a vinyl product?.... is it also possibly all-in-one with primer?..... also SICO seems to be a Canadian specific brand. It would be good if you can re-state what you used and show a product label, product number, or anything like that to be more clear what this is. This is important enough not to get wrong !!! .... :)

    • @dcwoodworks
